So Long, Mo Gotti Williams

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
regarding re signings, I'd see the following salaries:

JR - around 7M/year;
Shumpert - around 5/6M year;
Thompson - around 13M/year;
Mozgov - around 14M/year

So it totals a raise of around 23M at 16/17 season + new Love / LeBron max. This would put the new total around maybe 110M at that season, considering the Cavs simply keep their guys.

So basically, next MLE 3.5M and draft are the last remaining moves left to Griffin. He's got to get it right. After that there will be no more room. Gotta roll with it for 3-4 years.

Actually, this is another reason you don't want to overpay your own players just because you can do so, or because it would be too hard to find a replacement player. So long as your players are on reasonable, market-rate contracts, they are tradeable assets and you will retain some measure of flexibility in terms of your roster.

It will be really interesting to see what Thompson gets this summer because I can't see him being worth to any other team what he is worth to the Cavs, and every other team must know that the Cavs will match any offer that is reasonable and even an offer that is not entirely reasonable.

Cavs will of course have $3.5M+ MLE every year, plus the biannual exception every other year, so long as they aren't over the apron, and they can try to buy a pick in 2016, or any other year, if they wish to use their $3.3M+ annual allotment for that purpose.

They have shown this year that with Lebron they hold some attraction to veterans who have been willing in some cases to sacrifice money. Maybe they can get Mo Williams this off-season on this basis. This is a fairly significant tool at their disposal.

It will be really helpful if they are able to draft late in the first as well as teams like OKC and Chicago have been able to do, but I am not optimistic.

Thompson - around 13M/year;

This right here is why it sucks that Varejao is getting $10 million a year. That automatically drove up Thompson's value, and he's a more valuable player than Varejao at this stage, so now he's going to make a ton of money to be a backup big man and because he's one of LeBron's friends.

It could be an interesting in free agency because it seems that a lot of teams are looking for the FA crop in 2016. If teams are looking to 2016 they're not going to be handing out long term mega contracts this offseason or I wouldn't expect it atleast.

Yes.. that was a horrible move.. it was at the time it happened, and it will get worse.

Imagine what Mozgov will demand in 2016, when he'll be 29/30, a fundamental piece of a contender, possibly as important as or more important than Love to the team, going for the only contract of his life, with the new cap, when Varejao is making 10M, Thompson 13M, Love 25M...

Well, Cavs are past that. They have already established the core. AV is untreadable, TT will soon be.. The only question is: is Gilbert REALLY willing to pay a lot of money to keep the current 7 core guys together?

That is a horrifying number. Probably for Dan Gilbert, too.

Yes, it would be absurdely over the cap. It doesn't look feasible.

Maybe one guy will have to let go - JR, Shumpert, Mozgov or TT.

Looking ahead to 2016-17, even if the salary cap explodes to $90M, the Cavs would be looking at a potential salary commitment of $86M for just 4 players -- LeBron, Love, Kyrie, Andy. This assumes that LeBron and Love both sign new contracts in 2016.

My point is we are going to find out just how committed Gilbert will be to finance this team. The current CBA, including the punitive repeaters tax, was all but designed to prevent a massive team salary the Cavs are projected to have.

It's obvious: Love gets one more year, then he's gone. Long term max is not in the cards.

You're welcome!

Funny thing about the truth: sometimes it hurts, but it can set you (and Dan Gilbert's wallet) free.

Dan Gilbert got much of his wallet via investing in the first place. What happens when he invests in the Cavaliers? $$. Investing in LeBron's return alone doubled the worth of the franchise.

He might have to get creative to keep this team depending on how far it goes but make no mistake IMO he will do whatever it takes to keep it if it gets far enough.

Our salary situation is very similar to the 2007-2013 Lakers'.

JMHO: Love's skill set may prove essential to a championship run this year, but the team capabilities he represents can likely be replaced at half the cost per year. Since the team will be in the tax, you could potentially save the full 20M+ of the max salary slot while potentially replacing Love with two capable veteran players.

Love may be a luxury the team the team cannot afford, ESPECIALLY Taking into account his health status; as well as the re-signings of Mozgov (highest priority), Shumpert, J.R. or replacement, Thompson due his 'special' status, and last but not least, the King himself, who will always be able to opt out and did not become VP of the players association to leave money on the table.

Folks need to start getting real about this.

What a fantastic recipe for a championship team. Let's put Donyell Marshall and Drew Gooden around LeBron instead of Kevin Love.

..oh, LeBron left when Cleveland tried that before.

All productive players in the NBA are not being paid max salaries. It is up to management to identify and acquire the correct players. Mozgov now makes $5M--does he contribute to the team winning?

Paying Love a multi year max salary is NOT the only way to construct a championship team. The Cavs will need to perform their due diligence to make sure they take the correct course of action going forward.

One thing they don't want to do: lock up Love for the max over several years while his back condition limits his effectiveness.
