Mock Offseason

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I like Moultrie a lot. I dont think there's any chance he lasts past 18. But, i hope you're right.

Lamb may not be available at 25, let alone 33. He's jumped up a lot of draft boards in the last month.

I do agree with you on both counts here--this was a "best case, dream" scenario that I put together. I was using Ford's mock draft. The reason being is he supposedly has a lot of feedback from GM's and scouts. I do think Lamb will be close to 25 though. Moultrie I think goes top 20 when it is said and done.

I want to make a more realistic one.
In the draft, we get David, Ma. Plumlee, Bufford, and Johnson-Odom.

In free agency, we sign Daniel Green, Hickson, and Gee.

So our roster is:

PG- Irving/Sloan/Taylor
SG- Green/Gibson/Bufford
SF- Gee/Casspi/Johnson-Odom
PF- Davis/Hickson/Samuels
C- Thompson/Varejao/Plumlee

I don't think the Cavs will bring back JJ. He is restricted also, as is Daniel Green--so the cost may be higher than we want for both anyway.

I actually like Plumlee a bit--decent defender, good athlete for a big. I don't like Bufford anymore, I did last year--but his shooting was pretty bad this year.

You would throw money at Ilyasova so TT could stay on the bench? That's terrible.
starting thompson next to av is a lot more terrible.

the longer they (stupidly) keep av, the longer thompson will likely come off the bench*. that is the case no matter whom they sign or draft.

*excluding the half a season that av will inevitably miss obv

Crackpot theories aren't my specialty, so I'll have to wing it...

There's several directions we go in, depending on where our draft pick is placed and who we decide to draft first. I'll use my best judgment to not necessarily make THE MOCK OFFSEASON but rather what types of people we would be looking to grab out of it.

Untouchables: Kyrie Irving, Alonzo Gee (for re-signing)

Most likely to leave: Antawn Jamison (move on), Anthony Parker (retire), Most of the Bench (not good enough)
Questionable: Anderson Varejao (depends on offer, if feasible), Tristan Thompson (if deal is enticing)
Guys that could also be acquired: Other draft picks (based on Front Office workouts), a center to back up his position, a point guard to back up his position, just about anybody who wants to come here and fill a need

Translation: It's open season, no mock can guess what we'll do since Grant and co. are extremely closed-lipped.

I cave...I'll play:

Re-signed: Alonzo Gee (3 years, 11 million), Donald Sloan (1 year minimum), Lester Hudson (1 year minimum), Samardo Samuels (1 year minimum)

I like it. Would prefer Hibbert to asik, but this is OK... I think Anderson starts over Asik, but he could be traded for another young big (Byron mullens maybe) mid season. I am also thinking that sloan does not make the re-up. I wonder if Andre miller would take a small contract. Even though he is ancient, he is still playing pretty well, and could give us good bench minutes at point.

Now the real question comes, do you really think this squad matures into a team that can take the heat in seven?

Problem with Hibbert is that he is a Restricted Free Agent and will be much more expensive to acquire than Asik...Pacers have a lot of cap to match offers, where as the Bulls are a bit strapped for cash to really make a play for re-signing Asik, so I think he is a more reasonable and realistic target. As for Sloan, I like his A/T ration (basically 6/1) since he's been handed large minutes and I like the way he gets everyone involved, but the only PG I can see the F.O. go after is Johnny Flynn and I want nothing to do with that. Fact is, we don't need an Andre Miller type back-up PG next year because Kyrie will be getting the bulk of the minutes, so Sloan for the minimum and 13-15 minutes a night would be just fine with me.

As for the question, the team as its structured there wouldn't, and I think this team still makes the lotto, albeit in the 11-14 range and fighting for a playoff spot towards the end of the year, for the 2013 draft (which would be perfectly fine with me). Realistically, the 2013-2014 season is the year you will see leaps and bounds of improvement on the Cavs part, as long as everything goes well, guys improve like they should, and they draft correctly.

Edit: I'm also convinced that Asik's career curve will mirror that of Gortat's, who is averaging 16 points and 10 boards a game this year (Roy Hibberts stats as well), but Asik is a much better defender than Gortat, and Hibbert for that matter.

Hibbert is overrated severely! want no part of him at all......draft your center or just wait for next years deep center draft where the cavs will be in the 10-15 range

Agree, but we need a center period! Varejao already has proven that he can't hold up (health wise) year in and year out as a center, so signing one this offseason gets him back to where he should be, 6th man off the bench providing energy. Erden will be gone, so we have no one at center unless we draft one this year. TT can't last at C all year next year, neither can Samardo...so signing one will occur this offseason.

then take a flyer on a lesser name center and let that guy start next season....and then address the future center in the draft

all centers that are halfway decent are going to come at a cost, and just because you sign someone doesn't mean you don't address that position in the future in the draft...thats not a good way to run a team

My dream offseason.
4. Andre Drummond, C
Trade Andy+LALs first and our second for Portland's pick (lets just say 11)
11. Jeremy Lamb, G
33. Tyshawn Taylor, G

Sign Ersan Ilyasova, F 4yrs/25mil
Sign Omer Asik, F/C 3yrs/20mil

Re-sign Alonzo Gee 3yrs/11mil
Samardo Samuels minimum
Lester Hudson minimum
Manny Harris minimum
Re-sign Boobie to cheaper deal

PG - Irving/Taylor/Gibson
SG - Lamb/Hudson/Manny
SF - Gee/Casspi/Walton
PF - Ersan/TT/Samuels
C - Drummond/Asik/Erden

Needs for 2013 - Starting SF (Gee would be a great 6th or 7th man off the bench) and SG depth. Kept Walton cause we might be able to use his expiring next year to get back something with some sort of value.

If it costs more than Andy to get the #11 pick from Portland, you walk away. Andy, #26 AND #35 is WAAAAAYYYYYY too much to give up for Jeremy Lamb.

Yeah the only thing is, I really don't care cause I know none of this will happen. :coffee:

Hibbert will be more expensive. But by your own admission the team you articulate won't compete. In my opinion, centers and point guards take the longest to reach true potential. Kyrie, like Paul, is very unusual to come in and become the team centerpiece with just one partial college year under his belt. But if we rely on an eighteen year old center to power us into the finals we are looking at three years down the road, IF he pans out, which is a fifty fifty thing. I am arguing that we target Hibbert because he is the most accomplished in real numbers starting center other than Dwight. I also think we are drafting late enough, that neither Davis nor Drummond will be available, meaning we are likely to get a wing of some kind.

Hell with Scott coaching the way he is, this line up would make to the second round:

Kyrie/Hudson
Beal/Boobie
Gee/Assfingers
AV/Samardo
Hibbert/ Tristan

Don't get hung up on the bigs listed positions, because you could play them in just about any combination of center and power forward depending on the match ups. The weakest part of that line up is Gee, and we have three picks to find that guy. My personal favorites assuming Beal or any two is selected with our best pick, as opposed to Barnes or Jones, are Orlando Johnson, or Draymond Green.. But there are quite a few and arguments for many of them. The best thing about Gee, is that. I am ok with him at the 2 or the three. So if we do wind up with Barnes or Jones, you have pretty much the same result, but it would take an extra year to mature maybe..
