Negative Rep

Negative rep is a necessity for posters like Futuredome and Arison.

its got nothing ot do with an online persona, its the equivalent of sharing your opinion and some fucktard on the internet says 'yea fuck you, youre dumb' with zero explanation of how they disagree, which would turn into a discussion on the topic.

max cmon man, everyone sorts by looking for the posts everyone likes. if anything, 'disagree' brings more attention to the post rather than less.

I said i liked them, just my opinion. Then i asked a simple question of what was the downside other than hurt feelings. I also said it helps me sort. 7 people then clicked they liked my post, someone ranked it as a "winner", someone said it was funny, no one disagreed...you were the only one that said it was "dumb" with zero explanation as to what was dumb. :chuckle:

Sorry you think it was a dumb post, but for me personally, it does help me sort. There's a difference between posts that people disagree with and posts that are just dumb. If there's 20 people saying a post is dumb, i'll likely skip it. If there's 20 people saying they disagree i may actually read it to see what was so controversial. If there's 10 people saying they like a post and 10 saying they disagree, i will definitely stop to see what the person was saying that caused such a reaction.
I'm not saying the system is perfect. It probably needs some tweaking. But for me, i like more options than just like and dislike.

Like what?
The mods do a great job on this site keeping intelligent posts going.

In my experience on other boards that do have negative rep (which never was abused) the people who worried about negative rep usually weren't good posters and didn't last long.

That's obviously not the case with you Chris as you're universally respected here. I'm just not really sure why you're concerning yourself with such a minor thing on this site.

I don't know, it just kind of irked me because it really is the equivalent of someone going "Fuck you, you're dumb." It's like a troll feature IMO. But at the end of the day it doesn't matter, it's not like someone punches me in the face every time I get a Dumb rating. I guess I just wanted to hear the logic behind it. I have no issue with a Disagree option- why a "Dumb" one? was my question. :chuckle:

I want the rainbow back.

What exactly is the point of this, I'm curious? All I see are people rating posts negatively because they disagree with it, or for no coherent reason at all. And then they never even post something saying how they feel. Just click "Dumb" on a post and move on to the next thread.

What is the purpose of this?

Chris, someone in the Lockheed Martin thread wants to know why you rated their post dumb without an explanation. :chuckle:

Are you serious? It was an experiment to see if they would bitch about it. :chuckle: He was one of the people who rated a post of mine dumb for no reason.

i did the same thing in this thread.

I think "disagree" is just fine...it's the "dumb" rating that probably does more harm than good. Causes childish arguments that spam up the threads.

.

youre a mod that received an extraordinary amount of rep for a post, color me shocked.

and yea, i was making a point with my" dumb" rating.

Instead for coloring @David. shocked, color him rainbow.

I'm on board with Dave and Chris... Some idiot poster with no reasoning skills is going to sort which posts you read? I don't buy that, but I think it has to do with my experience.

Two particular posters: Cashius X and PeonHaters mark any criticism of Dion Waiters "Dumb". Glad they're the gatekeepers of what you do/don't read...

At this point, I'm just doubling or tripling up on them... Hit me with a "Dumb" without actually having input? I'll hit you with 3. It only helps when they care, though.

Overall, I am not a fan of the "Dumb" option. "Disagree" is one thing because it promotes discussion. I think it's dumb in itself to allow a low-quality poster dictate what you should and shouldn't read.

It's different to be a mod because outside a spotty argument with some tool, you are praised.

What if we did something for the "Dumb" rating so we had a text box in order to post a statement?

It would be like Old-School Rep, except for the negative rep. If you don't put anything in, you can't submit. And if you don't put anything but a space, that's fine. But then posters should be able to look at the list of such posts and identify further who's being helpful and who's just looking for a fight. Then the mods and admins can modify how to get it to work the right way.

It's a basic idea. Like a rat jumping the ship.

So you hate that people are "abusing it" yet you do it 3x, seems like you aren't helping the perceived problem very much.

I'm abusing the shit out of it now that it's being used flippantly as it is. If anything, I've identified a problem with it. People can dole out negative rep for whatever the hell they want and if that's cool, I'll push that.

On a side-note, I only do that if the person doesn't address why they think something is dumb.
