North Korea says Nuke Tests Target the US

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
North Korea doesn't have enough fuel to run their WWII tanks or their 1960s migs. Getting a missile off the ground would be a feat for them. They would have zero chance of hitting any of those targets, and trying to would end their existence on this planet. I'm pretty sure we are ok.

Hypothetically, if they were able to launch an ICBM with a nuclear warhead targeted for LA, what is the defense against it?

Can a scud type missile be used to neutralize it in the air? Would that create a nuclear explosion in the sky? What would happen in that situation?

Patriot missile. I believe the SM-3 can shoot them down, too (shot down a satellite a few years ago). The most difficult to shoot down are the re-entry types, because after re-enters the earth's atmosphere again, I believe there is only an 8 minute window to shoot it down.

Kim plans to bomb DC, LA...and Austin?

North Korea plan to attack US mainland revealed in photographs

North Korea has revealed its plans to strike targets in Hawaii and the continental United States in photos taken in Kim Jong-un's military command centre.

12:08PM GMT 29 Mar 2013

The photos appeared in the state-run Rodong newspaper and were apparently taken at an "emergency meeting" early on Friday morning. They show Kim signing the order for North Korea's strategic rocket forces to be on standby to fire at US targets, the paper said, with large-scale maps and diagrams in the background.

The images show a chart marked "US mainland strike plan" and missile trajectories that the NK News web site estimates terminate in Hawaii, Washington DC, Los Angeles and Austin, Texas.

The meeting of the Pyongyang's senior military leaders was called after two US B2 bombers, flying out of bases in Missouri, carried out simulated bombing raids on North Korean targets on an island off the coast of South Korea.

"He finally signed the plan on technical preparations of strategic rockets, ordering them to be on standby to fire so that they may strike any time the US mainland, its military bases in the operational theatres in the Pacific, including Hawaii and Guam, and those in South Korea," the state-run KCNA news agency reported.

It added that the B2 test flights demonstrated Washington's "hostile intent" and said the "reckless" act had gone "beyond the phase of threat and blackmail."

The North's military was placed on its highest alert level earlier this week and a hotline link with the South Korean military was severed.

North Korea has also cut the mobile Internet link for foreign visitors, only weeks after the 3G service was introduced.

Despite the increasingly belligerent rhetoric and new images emerging from the North Korean regime, analysts believe its missiles are not capable of striking targets as far away as the US mainland and are not, as yet, capable of delivering a nuclear payload.

The images of Kim surrounded by his officers and diagrams of targets in the US are designed for a domestic consumption and to demonstrate the young leader's mastery of military affairs, experts believe.

These are some of the photos that the article is referencing

As the article mentioned, analysts don't believe that North Korea has the technology to strike these targets, and it has been reported that these photos were "not supposed to be released". There is some speculation that the photos were released intentionally to give North Koreans a sense of pride at their military prowess/capabilities.

And here is a picture of the Apple computer used by Kim Jong Un despite the United States embargo against North Korea. Possibly a knockoff, but it justifies my dislike of Apple in my mind haha

we would shoot it down, and no it shouldnt create a nuclear explosion. even if they had a nuclear weapon (which most are 99.5% sure they dont), if you shoot it down it wont discharge because you destroy the very complicated internals of the bomb.

also the reason we dont go blow the shit out of them now, is everyone recognizes they probably arent dumb enough to try anything, because they minute they do they get blow off the face of the earth. literally. its not worth it to them. we know that, they know that, everyone knows that

Does anyone else find this pathetic?

It's almost as if they don't realize the rest of the world has the internet...and is unilaterally mocking them...

Austin, Texas? Must have heard the rumors of Romo getting a contract extension.

I sense the newest internet meme. Kim Jong Un reacts to (insert subject here).

The most reliable means of stopping an incoming ICBM is to detonate a nuclear missile in it's immediate vicinity. This type of nuclear shield has been around since the early 1960's and is very effective. In any likely attack, I'm sure the President would use this means of defense rather than relying on an anti-missile system. You only get one chance.

Lastly, it's pretty much well accepted that the DPRK has a dozen or more nuclear weapons, and of the type that can be miniaturized. In fact, their last test was believed to be of a weapon design that could easily fit onto an ICBM. So they do indeed have the technology to launch a nuclear missile.

Now, could they hit the continental United States? Probably the West Coast, yes, but not likely with any accuracy whatsoever. They couldn't, for instance, target Los Angeles and reasonably expect a detonation. Nor do I think that would be their plan.

More likely than not, the DPRK would attempt to smuggle the warheads as close to the U.S. shoreline as they could, and detonate them that way. It makes far far more sense. The downside is that it won't cause nearly as much damage being detonated on ground level and half way out to sea; but it would be very destructive, especially if detonated while at port.

However, places like Japan, Guam, Saipan, and possibly Hawaii could easily be hit by a DPRK missile launch. And they do not need to rely on nuclear weapons, they could bombard S. Korea with chemical weapons and poison gas, of which, they have an abundance.

Canada doesn't see it coming......

Brillance here....
