OBR Updates 11/6

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He had 3 losing seasons in 11, went to the playoffs 5 times.

The Browns have had 2 winning seasons in 13. Went to the playoffs once.

You have to start somewhere.....

And in the four seasons before Gruden's arrival, they had been in the playoffs in four of the previous five seasons while posting records of .500 or better in all of them.

Again, Gruden inherited a team full of Super Bowl caliber talent and left them in dire straights because of his inability to develop young talent, the most key factor he would need in Cleveland to be successful.

I'm sorry, I won't shut my brain off after looking at just his record...there was obviously reasons for that success which lies in talent.

In the two years following Gruden's Super Bowl win, the Bucs went 7–9 and 5–11 respectively, implying to many Dungy supporters that Gruden had simply taken over a strong team and then driven it into the ground. However, the high draft picks sacrificed by the team to acquire Gruden, along with salary-cap issues and failed draft choices forced upon him by the now-departed Rich McKay (with whom Gruden had a bitter relationship) limited Gruden's ability to field the teams he wanted after that successful Super Bowl-winning season. With no emerging talent in the fold and no money to afford replacements, the team was decimated by injuries to many of the Super Bowl stars, including Joe Jurevicius, Greg Spires, Shelton Quarles, and (cornerback), as well as acrimony with highly-paid veterans such as Sapp, Keyshawn Johnson and Keenan McCardell.

Sounds like they were in a salary cap hell in the few years after they won the Super Bowl. I'm not saying he'd be my first choice, but we can definitely do worse.

They were in cap hell, but if anyone can list for me the number of offensive players Gruden developed in his tenure I'd be happy to see it.

There is literally no one.

Joey Galloway had his best years in Tampa
Cadillac Williams was pretty damn good until injuries derailed his career.

If you're talking QB's then no, he had already established Gannon and Brad Johnson when he arrived at OAK and Tampa

And sorry, no one was going to develop Brian Griese or Chris Simms.

He wasn't young by any stretch of the imagination but Rich Gannon was trash for the first 9 years of his career. As soon as Gruden teamed up with him in 1999 he started throwing for 3500+ yds a season.

He inherited a great team.

Taking them on a pretty steady decline talent wise.

I love when you make excuses, he's a great coach. Not every coach wins with a good team. A great coach wins it all with a good team.

Gruden was the guy who wanted those QBs in the first place.

Galloway was 33 years old before he ever played for Gruden. Caddy Williams is the closest thing to a player he developed, and he was effective for about four weeks into his NFL career before being profoundly mediocre even before his injuries in 2006.

Oh, almost forgot...he has a ring.

Nobody has ever won a ring with out being unquestionably great and a perfect fit....no matter how long ago it was.

Not nearly as punchable as Weeden.

But both are still somehow less punchable than Simms and Gannon:

The guys Gruden picked up may have been average QB's, but he got the best out of them and that's what makes a good coach.

Not to mention he is from the area and grew up a Browns fan.

Well, Gruden is out, since he's the next Volunteers HC.

He got the best out of them? Sounds like pure speculation on your part, I think they'd much rather have someone who actually develops young talent.

Mr. Offensive Genius ranked 18th or worse in points per game EVERY SEASON during his tenure in Tampa Bay.

But hey, he's from Cleveland...so there's that.

Oh come on. There's a lot not to like about Gruden, but you can't argue that he's gotten a lot out of his old and mediocre QBs. He took Rich freaking Gannon to the pro bowl.
