So I was just at a county (state) education awards and it started off with this choir singing. And who is staring me in the face but young rickon stark! He hasn't done anything major since he got separated from bran. Here's hoping he is brought back to the show so my anecdote improves in relevance

Battle for the Wall was pretty kick ass. Glad to see the cannibal guy get..dude was a douche nozzle. And that giant shooting an arrow and launching that guy was probably the best thing ever.

I even turned on Jesse towards the end. There were episodes in which I slightly hated Walt, but over all, I was a champion for him. Jesse on the other hand, I wanted him to die when he spilled everything to Hank. I was thrilled when Walt told Jesse he was there when Jane died. And as much as I liked Hank, he had to go. I just wish Marie was killed too.

Fuck, not my perspective at all. Again, I rooted for him to be a villain, but I was totally rooting for the other protagonists while dreading what I was sure Gilligan would do to them. Worked out for some, not for others... DID THAT SPARE THE SPOILERS WELL ENOUGH?

Tonight's episode was pretty awesome. Given the amount of death on the show I've basically started to detach myself from characters, calling out deaths before they even happend (some still haven't but I'm sure it'll be brutal). I still found myself rooting hard for characters throughout. I even switched to rooting for the Wildlings for a bit given how fucking awesome giants on mammoths are. Jesus fuck that was fun to watch.

Great that dickhead Alliser Thorne, who hates Jon, nevertheless showed up as a brave, ballsy guy.

Man that was an absolutely fantastic episode! I love that they just focused on the Wall, it kept the tone of the entire episode focused on the events. This is by far the best army battle I've seen from the show, it dwarfs the battle of Blackwater Bay. Its so nice that they bumped the 'shocking' character death to episode 8 deviating from the previous seasons. Although I guess Ygritte biting the dust counts a bit. However, I would've wanted to see Ghost rip through more wildlings tbh (they showed one kill!). :chuckles:

Question for book readers (please use spoiler tags to comply with the thread):
- Will Ghost join Jon beyond the wall?
- Will Arya and Nymeria reunite?

Can't wait for the finale!

To be honest, I don't remember if Ghost was with him or not at that point in the books, but from the way the episode ended, I don't think Ghost is going with him on the show.

- Will Arya and Nymeria reunite?

Unless they make a change from the books, not at this point. In the books, though, Arya was able to warg into Nymeria when she slept. As of now that hasn't been a part of the show at all.

I mentioned this in the other thread, but can we all give a round of applause for John Bradley as Sam? He's basically the best part of the storyline at the Wall. He has amazing comedic timing, can handle dramatic acting, and has great and believable chemistry with Hannah Murray (Gilly). He's one of the rare examples of an actor who has totally transcended his book character. Sam on the show is very different than Sam in the books, but he's also a much better, more interesting, and and less frustrating character on the show. I credit most of that to Bradley's performance.

He also had all the best lines last night. :chuckles:

I loved, "Well, is it over?"

lol'd out loud.

Sam in the show is definitely better than Sam in the books. Awesome character.

I happened to be watching the episode with one of my best friends, his wife, and one of his other good friends. We all died laughing at that line. I loved his follow-up "well then" as he handed Pyp the other crossbow too.

I like Sam in the show a lot, I just don't see how he is so much better than his book character.

Can't wait for
him to fuck Gilly

I think it's the fact that, in the books, he's just such a relentless pussy. He might be smart, but he fucks up everything else, and he doesn't seem to grow much from the character we meet in the first book to the character we see in the later books.

On the show, he's just a much more well-rounded character. We've seen actual growth from him since he first showed up until now. He went from being completely fucking useless to actually kind of a respectable character. Look at him last night. He did some good during the battle (which I know he wasn't a part of in the books, but still). He helped Pyp. He hid Gilly. He killed a Thenn. He made it to the lift and informed Jon that they were losing the battle below. He freed Ghost. He inspired that kid who killed Ygritte to keep fight. All of that felt completely in character because the show has done a good job of developing Sam over time. Oh, and he's also funny (although that has been true since basically the beginning).

The books just haven't done the same. Basically, in them, once a pussy, always a pussy. He's just much more boring in the books.

I guess I just don't remember him much from the books. I kind of skimmed his chapters not gonna lie.

They should make him skinnier. Shouldn't he be losing weight being at the wall?

Yeah, you don't remember him much because he was mostly boring. He had some decent chapters, but for the most part his chapters seem to be spectating someone or something more important, like when you see Mormont die through his POV or when he introduces Bran to Coldhands (who is a character cut from the show, so don't get panicky with the spoilers).

On the show, he's actually a great character. He's a guy you root for because, while he's not the hero, he's also not completely fucking incompetent. He had some of the high points of last night's episode, which is a sequence he didn't even appear in in the books.

And to be fair, the show character is already skinnier than the book character, but Martin has a habit of going super overboard with the descriptions of his fat characters to the point that they are just absolutely ridiculous.

Like Manderley?

I just think it'd be sweet if in between seasons the actor toned it up and slimmed down a bit, it'd be sorta cool to see that transformation.
