Like Manderley?

I just think it'd be sweet if in between seasons the actor toned it up and slimmed down a bit, it'd be sorta cool to see that transformation.

There are tons of roles out there for funny fat guys. Not so many for funny only sort of fat guys. Stop trying to screw John Bradley out of jobs!

I guess. He's comedy relief. But does he have to be fat to be comedy relief? It'd just be more believable if he lost weight and got more in shape. He's like killing dudes in battle now and being inspirational in fights but I just can't take him seriously because I know he'd be dead in 5 seconds if this were real.

Fat dudes cant fight brah.

I think it's the fact that, in the books, he's just such a relentless pussy. He might be smart, but he fucks up everything else, and he doesn't seem to grow much from the character we meet in the first book to the character we see in the later books.

On the show, he's just a much more well-rounded character. We've seen actual growth from him since he first showed up until now. He went from being completely fucking useless to actually kind of a respectable character. Look at him last night. He did some good during the battle (which I know he wasn't a part of in the books, but still). He helped Pyp. He hid Gilly. He killed a Thenn. He made it to the lift and informed Jon that they were losing the battle below. He freed Ghost. He inspired that kid who killed Ygritte to keep fight. All of that felt completely in character because the show has done a good job of developing Sam over time. Oh, and he's also funny (although that has been true since basically the beginning).

The books just haven't done the same. Basically, in them, once a pussy, always a pussy. He's just much more boring in the books.

Agree with everything you said. What I liked in particular was that they have made no attempt to make him into some kind of badass. He still can't swing a sword with a shit, and didn't really even want to shoot a crossbow, so he just loaded. It's been a perfectly believable character arc, helped by having a really good actor in the part.

Well, he hasn't actually fought on the show. He stabbed a White Walker in the back and shot a dude with a crossbow in a moment of panic. It's not like he's carving dudes up out there with his sword. :chuckles:

Hey so the wall commander dude was going on about the ladies he loved and such and mentioned one special chick. Are we supposed to be reading anything into this at all?

He's a Maester not a commander, breh. But...

Not that I know of ... but Jack may be able to tell more.

Was the Thenn that Jon killed Styr the Magnar or just stunt Thenn number 3?

This confused me a lot. They all look the same.

The Thenns are nothing like they are in the books. So weird.

That is a spoiler? It is not like someone told you that Walter White dies in the end! Oh wait !

You know what? I just refuse to get mad over this.

But I do feel sorry for you, sitting there behind your computer, acting like a tough guy who gets enjoyment out of ruining other people's cultural experiences and enjoyments, people who are complete strangers to you, and who hasn't done a thing to justify your behavior. Why can't you just act like a decent human being?

I don't think so. I think it was just a moment meant to humanize him (like his S1 speech with Jon about his struggles with love and duty) and to give him a good moment with Sam. The dude is supposed to be like 103, so whoever the girl was he was speaking about is surely dead by now, and I can't imagine it will be of any consequence later. I could be wrong, of course, but I don't think that discussion was taken from the books.

Maybe there's some more info in the Dunk & Egg novellas (which take place when Aemon was young), but it's been a while since I read one. Either way, I doubt it's very important.

What were they like in the books?

From the Westeros wiki:

"The Thenn consider themselves the last of the First Men. They speak the Old Tongue and most have only a few words of the Common Tongue. They are led by the Magnar, who is considered more a god than a man by his people. Because they have laws and lords in their valley, some consider the Thenns more sophisticated than other free folk and closer to the people south of the Wall. They have more dealings with giants than other men.

The Thenns are savage fighters, but because of their belief in the Magnar as their god they are absolutely obedient and more disciplined than other free folk. They are often better equipped than most free folk, with bronze helms, axes of bronze and a few of chipped stone, short stabbing spears with leaf-shaped heads, shirts sewn with bronze discs, and plain unadorned shields of black boiled leather with bronze rims and bosses."

I didn't know if Daemon was supposed to have been talking about Jon Snow's mom or something.

I didn't know if Daemon was supposed to have been talking about Jon Snow's mom or something.

There are a lot of theories about who Jon Snow's parents are or aren't.

But I think you can pretty much put to bed any thought of his dad being Maester Aemon

If you want to know the prevailing theory (and this has not been confirmed in the books, although most people are pretty sure it's true) on Jon Snow's parents, mouse over the spoilers below.

Most readers believe that Jon Snow's mother is Lyanna Stark, Ned's sister, and that his father is Rhaegar Targaryen. The popular theory is that Lyanna ran off with Rhaegar rather than having been kidnapped by him (as Robert told us in season one). It's also possible that they eloped.

The show has done kind of a piss poor job of going into any of this, but there is a Ned dream scene in the first book where he remembers, after Aerys was killed, going to a place known as the Tower of Joy to bring Lyanna home. There, he and six of his men (including Howland Reed, Meera and Jojen's father) fought against three members of the Kingsguard. Only Ned and Howland survived. Ned then finds Lyanna on a bed of blood, dying. Many believe that this refers to complications she had during childbirth. She also makes Ned promise her something that he never reveals, probably not to tell Robert about her son if the theory is true.

Much has been made about the presence of those three Kingsguard members at the Tower of Joy. Realistically, with Rhaegar having been killed on the Trident, his children murdered by the Mountain in King's Landing, and Aerys dead at the hands of Jaime Lannister, those Kingsguard members should have went to Dragonstone to defend Viserys, who would now be the Targaryen heir to the throne. Further, they obviously had no reason to fear for the safety of Lyanna, as Ned was clearly not their to hurt her. Therefore, it stands to reckon that they were there to defend a baby who, after the violent deaths of Aegon and Rhaenys in King's Landing during the sack, might have actually been in danger.

Another reason many think Jon Snow is the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna is that it would make him the only person in the series born of ice (Starks) and fire (Targs), which would obviously align with the title of the series, A Song of Ice & Fire.

Again, none of that is actually confirmed in the books (yet), and some of you may have puzzled it out for yourselves or read about it in the other thread, but it's some interesting backstory nonetheless.
