Official Rock / Indie / Alternate Music Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I've been listening to the new album (Swoon) for the last couple weeks. Very solid.

"Carnavas" - one of my faves to come out in the last couple years. I'm kicking myself that I missed them live in Cleveland last year. :(

Both very good albums. Really starting to dig the new one after a few listens. Carnavas was brilliant from first listen. I actually caught them when they supported Snow Patrol and Iain Archer a few years back. Was one of about 20 people in the crowd at that time. Do yourself a favour and look up Iain Archer. Actually was an original member of Snow Patrol. Some good stuff.

Keep this stuff coming. I'm lapping this shit up!

Interpol's "No I in Threesome" is one of the best songs of the last few years. Brilliant song.

Am I mistaken here, but aren't the Watchmen a Canadian band that had a song called "Stereo" like 10 years ago? I think they had a album by the name of Silent Radar or something similar.

The Shins are bloody awesome. One of those bands that if your in a bad mood, put em on and you snap out of it.

Exactly!

Also, if anyone else's into the alt.country/ americana scene (Wilco, Drive By Truckers etc), I'd love to hear suggestions.

Word has it that the lead singer from Wilco has gone solo. Didn't really get into Wilco though.

Sleep the Clock around is my fav Belle and Sebastian song. I totally forgot them. Im going to que them up and get some work done for the rest of the day:D

It's way too hard only to choose one song IMO, but Sleep the Clock Around is without doubt one of the best. I love the low key vocals, and when they add the trumpet half-way through the song.

Here it is for everyone to hear:

Wilco is a great band and a big favorite. Some of their albums are way too country for my taste though. But I would've given them a second chance anyways, Karma. Check out Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Sky Blue Sky to a degree. They have some similarities to The Shins, so I'm sure you'd like some of their music. :)

I didn't like Sky Blue Sky that much. I found it too high in guitar noodling and too low in tunes.
here's a couple more suggestions:

The New Pornographers, a quirky Canadian indie group (this is a rather old song but very catchy)

and indie lady sings the blues: Cat Power

Some of the songs are really great, where others not so much. It's no where near Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in quality, but it is absolutely a good album IMO.

I actually have bought one of TNP's albums, but I've never gotten myself to listen to it. I think it was their debut, but I'm not sure. I will look for it:tongue:

Speaking of Canada: I believe someone earlier in this thread crowned UK as the kings of indie. Well, I think the crown belongs to Canada. It's just crazy how much great indie music that is produced in that country.

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to bump this thread with a couple of songs.

First, it's MGMT. All who's interested in indie music have probably heard of them. Especially Kids that has become a major radio hit.

This is the song I like the best though. It's like a slow waltz for indie kids. So damn beautiful:

The next one is a song by the duo Matt & Kim. They released their second album a little while ago, but I haven't got the chance to listen to it yet. This is from their first album. Great song IMO.

If there is one musician today that I follow blindly to any project they move to next, it's Jack White. I've seen The White Stripes three times (twice in Cleveland and once in Detroit) and they've consistently blown the roof off. I've seen The Raconteurs once as well, and although I wouldn't put that show on the same pedestal as a Stripes show, Jack's axe playing was mesmerizing.

Jack is arguably one of the best guitarists making music today, so I was a little hesitant when his new band (which he refuses to call a "side project") The Dead Weather was going to have him play drums. I've had faith in everything else White has done, so here goes. This is the first single from The Dead Weather (also consisting of Alison Mosshart from The Kills on vocals, Jack Lawrence from the Raconteurs on bass, and Dean Fertita from Queens of the Stone Age) entitled "Hang You From the Heavens"

If you grew up with the punk revival like I did in the early 90s your number one album was Green Day's "Dookie". After losing their relevance for a stretch (I'm looking at that mature album "Warning") they roared back with the epic "American Idiot", a rock opera where that kid from "Longview" grew up and fought back against society. Their new album "21st Century Breakdown" seems to be the sequel of sorts and the first single is "Know Your Enemy":

I don't know what's Indie/Alternate or w/e I just kind of explore everything and listen to what I like. Let's start out with some Akron boys...

First heard this song on the radio when I was driving through the Sierra Nevadas in winter...it was amazing:

And now I'm going to make a lot of friends...or completely alienate myself.:chuckles:

The definition of indie music has become very vague. Indie bands from the 70s and 80s were bands that produced they're own music; indie = independent. Today, I feel the expression is mostly used about bands where all the band members have long beards and/or play soft guitar tones.

Great suggestions anyways. I'm totally in love with Spoon, they're amazing. My Morning Jacket and BRMC are also good.

I have never been really down on Tom Waits as a musician though. But I really like him as an actor, he was great in Down by Law.

Don't know if this qualifies for this thread but there is a band I've been listening to recently called Wookiefoot. They are kind of cross between 311 and Sublime if any of guys are down with that. I also of course like me some Cake.

Nice suggestions, I really loved Gideon when Z first came out. BRMC were quite good although they owed too much to these guys:

Now, when it comes to Tom Waits I like his early albums (up to 1983), not so much the later ones with all the barking and howling.

I checked out Wookie foot by they sounded too reggae for me . I'm down with Cake though.

Yeah, thats one of the things with Wookie Foot, they do have an album thats all Irish drinking songs though, they do tend to change up there style from time which is interesting... Cake is def much better IMO.
