Omri Casspi: Twinkle Toes

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Casspi has two confidence modes: zero and over.
He is either all-giddy or sulking.
Like a bipolar puppy.

I don't know why, but this line has me DYING right now.

That's good. I've referred to this before but Casspi reminds me of Nocioni in his early career. The guy played on sheer emotion, but usually his emotion was rage. Casspi showed more of his fire in Sacramento than he has in Cleveland, but if he could work his way to have a Nocioni-like career, coming off the bench with strong D, hitting the 3, and playing tough - he'll stay in the league a while. He's slowly showing why he deserves to have playing time.

I would actually like to see Casspi moved to the starters. I don't think he is necessarily better than Gee, but I think his ability to knock down spot-up threes is a much better asset for the starting five than Gee's slashing.

The Apocalypse is officially upon us.

In the span of a week (starting with the Miami game) I have seen you go from "not being comfortable living in a world in which Casspi is good at basketball" to "wanting to see Casspi moved to the starting line-up".

I have never seen such a dramatic turn around in my life. Something weird is going on out there.

Well, the comment about not being comfortable was more a joke than anything.

And it's not so much that I think he's a viable starter but rather that his skill set (spot-up threes) fits better with the starting line-up than Gee's slashing. That is assuming, of course, that Casspi continues his hot streak. Casspi is playing well and nailing threes. That's pretty much perfect next to the drive-and-kick games that Pargo and Waiters can utilize.

Casspi On The Outs In Cleveland?

When the Cleveland Cavaliers acquired Omri Casspi from the Sacramento Kings before the start of the 2012 season the franchise believed they were receiving their small forward of the future in the deal.

Fast forward nearly 18 months and it appears Casspi may now be the odd man out in Cleveland’s rebuilding plans. The relationship started off as expected with Casspi earning a spot in the team’s starting lineup, but the forward lost his starting role midway through last season to the emerging Alonzo Gee.

Casspi spent a good portion of this past summer working out at Impact Basketball in Las Vegas addressing the areas of his game Cavs head coach Byron Scott said would lead to a more solidified spot in the rotation this season.

However, Casspi is now even further down the depth chart and averaging a career-low 13 minutes per game. The forward is a bit confused by this development after believing he had an understanding with Scott.

“Most of the stuff [coach Scott] told me to work on, I did,” Casspi said to HOOPSWORLD. “I worked on them during the summer. During the season we make the little adjustments we need to make. But other than that we need to just focus on the team perspective. But we worked on my jump shot and other stuff I needed to do this summer.

“I just try to do my job and step by step get more and more minutes. The way to do it is by keep working hard and doing what I need to do on both ends of the floor.”

Casspi, the 23rd overall pick of the 2009 draft, was eligible for an early extension but both parties couldn’t agree to a deal before the Oct. 31 deadline. The Cavs now have until June 30 to offer Casspi a qualifying offer, which would then make the forward a restricted free agent and give the franchise the right to match any offer received for his services during free agency.

The fourth year forward says the contract and playing time issues won’t become a distraction, but makes it clear he is now looking forward to testing his market value in free agency and confident his skills will bring in suitors.

“I’m looking forward to free agency to see what’s going to happen and see what [deals] are out there,” Casspi said. “I’m pretty confident where I’m at.”

For now, Casspi admits the biggest adjustment he’s had to make due to his shrinking role is remaining patient when his number is called by Scott as the coach has gained more and more confidence in Gee at small forward.

“You only have a certain time that you play and you want to do so much,” Casspi said. “You have to slow it down sometimes. I agree. It’s something I really thought about earlier. Not trying to get 25 rebounds in the six or seven minutes that I play. Or score twenty points. Take it one step at a time, be aggressive and do what I need to do to help the team win.”

Casspi is averaging career lows in minutes (13.0), points (6.0), rebounds (2.4) and assists (0.3) per game to start the season, but is shooting a career-best 52 percent from three-point range.

Is he serious here? Casspi's early season run, or lack thereof, was in direct correlation with his production. Gimme a break here. As his play consistantly improves, so will his minutes. Minutes are earned, not handed out. Casspi spent the first three weeks of the season sucking balls. He's spent the last week and half playing better. Shut the hell up and keep doing your job.

He didn't actually criticize anyone or say he should've gotten more minutes. That was the writer's commentary that implied that.

Casspi looked good in preseason and has an excessively short lease on the court. The bench has improved as his minutes increased.

you cant seriously argue this doesnt equivocate to earning ones minutes

I'm assuming you're responding to me, but it's hard to tell because you didn't quote anything and you're post is pretty vague. But, in the case you are, I basically said he's been playing good the last week and a half after shitting the pot for the first 3 weeks of the season. I would argue, pretty much like I said, that his minutes will increase as his consistancy does. Consistancy is much more than a week and a half, especially after he has pretty much underachieved the first season and 3 weeks here before that. Pretty simple. But, didn't you also try to argue he was the second most efficient rebounder on the team after playing a whopping 36 minutes compared to guys who logged 10x as much time? Slow down, dude. Props are given when they are fully earned. He hasn't fully earned anything but getting on the court 15-20 mins a game right now. If he keeps it up, it will definitely force Scott's hand...and that's a good thing.

His first real chance this year was against OKC and he was really bad. He followed that with 3 horrible minutes against Brooklyn.
He has been decent ever since. If you include the good summer that he had and the good preseason performance, he only had 1 bad week this year so far. One can argue that his contribution went up with his minutes and not the other way around.

Anyway, I think that when a team is down by 3 with 0.6 seconds left, and a player is 4-4 from 3 in that game, he should be on the floor. Scott seems to have automatic substitutions regardless of what is going on on the court. Casspi's minutes have more to do with Gee getting in foul trouble than his contribution on the floor.

I do agree with you that consistency is key and that he needs to keep working hard and prove himself. Also, it is difficult to argue that Casspi should get more of Gee's minutes since he has been playing well (especially on defense). But if Casspi keeps up the good shooting and solid D, Scott will need to find a way to keep him on the court a little longer.

Actualy Casspi started playing well and has been steadily improving as Scott started giving him regular minutes which was game 9 of the season. he played pretty well for shooting 1-7 against OKc and Scott was more intent on getting CJ miles minutes.

The bench started out horrible. It had nothing to do with Casspi

Casspi looks good as long as he doesn't have to move his feet. Don't trust him dribbling the ball or shooting off the dribble, but damn if his feet are set he's been drilling them

He actually had a couple of nice passes off of drives against Portland. I agree he shouldn't be shooting off the dribble unless it's a lay-up, but if he can keep on doing the slash-and-kick successfully I'm fine with it.
