Patrick McCaw

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I thought there was waiting period on signing and cutting a guy. Why have we never seen this situation before?

I always assumed there were a whole set of rules with restricted agents that seem prevents this from happening but I guess they were just stuff that agents demanded or etiquette that were unspoken rules by the NBA.

One thing that added the pressure not to match was the trade deadline and that waiting period between signing and the ability for guys to be traded. Mccaw wasn't able to be traded because it was within 60 days of the trade deadline.

Also if they don't complain about it, then the rules might not change. I think this is more about getting the rules to change so any RFA offer sheet has to include a guaranteed first year. Teams complained about Z getting traded, bought out, and rejoining the cavs, that got the rules to change.

Teams don't want to lose RFAs in this manner. It basically makes RFA useless if teams are willing to circumvent the design of offer sheets and the restrictions involved with it. I actually always thought you needed to offer RFAs 2+1 contracts at minimum for an offer sheet because you never saw anything less than that.

Doc Rivers specifically complained about the Z loophole during that season if I'm not mistaken, and a lot of teams were upset about the McKie/Van Horn cap hold loophole that was used on Pau Gasol, but AFAIK they waited until the appropriate time at the CBA negotations to close those loopholes.

Kicking us when we're down in this manner with a complaint is a uniquely Warriors move, particularly since, well, we're down, unlike with Z and with the Lakers at the time.

Anyway, breaking news: hope he can get his revenge against GS in the finals this year. Rapz in Fo'!

So if the Cavs end up in some heat with the NBA for this and loss some picks.. Lol..

I think we wont get much of anything since they didn't resign him. There is no salary-cap circumventing if we didn't resign him.

It could be tampering if someone admits we signed him with the intentions of waiving him as a favor to his agent so he could get to unrestricted free agency. I think that would be very hard to prove since we played him and he didn't give us any reason to keep him. There are a lot of logical reasons why we waived him.

I'm glad GSW's whined about us signing McCaw - shows it pissed them off and stung a bit. No skin off our ass.

Cavs won't get punished for this. We had perfectly legitimate reasons for signing him, and for letting them.

Raptors coaches once this guy plays 2 minutes in an actual game:

They held the inquiry into the McCaw situation today. McCaw has to keep playing for Golden State until he retires for the league minimum, and has to pay Lacob 100M dollars.

Nothing will come of this and truthfully, the Cavs won't even have to bother fighting it if the NBA starts poking around.

The Players Association will do all the leg work here. The Cavs helped a player in contract gridlock and the NBAPA isn't going to allow any team that does that to fall on the sword.

More came out. The Cavs have to give GS Zion Williamson, and if they don't get the #1 overall they owe their next #1 overall to GS in perpetuity.
