Pluto: Childress, WCO, and the draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'd be fine with that as long as the defense showed it was going to be dominant, because next year should see at least a couple franchise QBs in Barkley and Wilson. Hopefully, anyway. But a lot of people will not be fine with it. They want everything fixed RIGHTNAW. Rizzo and the rest of Cleveland sports talk radio was already calling for H&H's heads this year, in the fucking second year of a new regime. If they suck again next year all bets are off. Shit might hit the fan. Fans will be going nuts.

So it depends on what theory you advocate. Placate the fans and go all offense and go big with the RG3 pick and other offensive pieces, basically praying that RG3 is the real deal...or do you look at next year and figure we should just solidify the defense even more and make it potentially elite in the near future, but sacrifice another year of terrible offense and risk alienating the fan base and turning the temperature up on your regime by about 500 degrees.

The fans that don't like how the FO is running things can take a hike. Rout them over the 480 bridge because all they'll do is bitch about something no matter what happens.

I'm all for RG3 at 4. All for it. If the FO doesn't like him, that won't be great for my opinion, but I am only a fan. Nothing more. If they decide defense is the way to go, lets do it.

Since this FO has taken over, we've had the closest thing to a finished product on either side of the ball. Granted, our offense is prehistoric, but everything comes in time.

I'm really happy with the defense's position right now. If they invest one or two more high picks into that defense, the team will be in a position to try to hit on later round defensive guys. If the later round picks don't pan out, they're depth. If they do pan out, defense gets far better. I hate to say the cliche thing, but Rome wasn't built in a day.

As long as Lerner doesn't spazz out and fire everybody because the fans are mad, I'm fine. Personally, I didn't think the Browns would be close to a contender or finished product for about 5 years after Holmgren and Heckert took the job. So far, that looks to be on track. We're going into year 3 and still have a lot of work to do. I'm pretty patient. The Browns have been horrible my whole life. As long as they get it right, I'm willing to wait another 2-3 years.

I doubt you are going to find many front offices who have drafted as well as the Browns since Heckert took over. The fact of the matter is, the Mangini regime left the team with very little young talent. He valued "his guys," which valued loyalty over ability. It will take a while to rebuild what Mangini was tearing apart.

Totally agree. Not just Mangina, but ... everything the Browns have done since coming back. It's like a wound that has been allowed to fester for a decade and only now are we starting to try to heal it.

To be honest, Heckert's first draft in Cleveland was not particularly impressive. There's Joe Haden and basically JAGs the rest of the way. The trade-up for Hardesty doesn't look good at all right now.

I remember people talking about how great Phil Savage's drafts were early in his tenure here, FWIW.

If we stick with Colt McCoy for another season we are guarenteed 6-10 at best regardless of the offensive talent. Sure our defense may go from giving up 19.2 points per game to 17 but when we can only score 13 does it really matter?

Throwing the football and rushing the passer. That is what wins in the NFL. Everything else is secondary.

Meh, Ward and McCoy were solid value picks. Lauvao can be a backup OL player, which is break-even in the late third round. 2010 draft was above average for a normal franchise, downright great for the Browns.

I'm not giving up on Ward as an impact player. He had a good rookie season and then regressed a bit. Since when do we give up on dudes after sophomore troubles...

Considering sophomore slump is a term thrown around the sports world all the time-- I'm definitely not giving up on our guys in their sophomore year(s).

Lauvao was actually pretty good last year, just didn't look because of what he had on his right side. His pass blocking is below average to average and his run blocking is average to above. I'd still very much consider him a starter in the future.

Getting a high quality backup QB in the 3rd was still a good deal and Ward is a starter on well over half the teams in the NFL, perhaps even a star on some teams.

The only bad pick was Monterio and that was because of injuries. SMH, it happens.

I will only be happy if we spend at least the first two picks on Offense. This offense desperately needs some talent particularly at the skilled positions. The defense is pretty good as is and we can continue to improve it with a couple free agents or in other drafts but the offense needs drastic improvements NOW!

So the 2010 Draft tally:

- One good player (Haden)

- One decent player (Ward)

- One scrub QB (McCoy)

- One RB who has been a walking M.A.S.H. unit in college and in the pros and who Heckert traded up for (Hardesty)

- Two guys who never played a down for the Browns (Geathers and Asante)

- One guy who has played some downs for the Browns but has done precious little in any of them (Carlton Mitchell)

Things could change, obviously, but as of right now I'd take Savage's 2006 Draft (Wimbley, D'Qwell, Jerome Harrison, Lawrence Vickers) over Heckert's 2010 Draft.

Now, he did do a little better in 2011. But the fact remains that Heckert has had two drafts and has landed exactly zero in the way of offensive playmakers (with the dubious exception of Greg Little.)

If he doesn't rectify that this year he might not get another draft to work with.

I'm glad you're judge, jury, and executioner of the Browns F.O., Mr. GreasySpread Holmgren.

Every post you make has an imbedded threat to the front office of the Browns. If you're not RL or a Browns employee, then I'm going to tell you that I think you're nuts with this comment.

Allow me to help you:

We have gotten two good players (Ward and Haden)

One good backup QB (Colt)

A starting guard (Lauvao)

So...what is your problem with this again? 3 starters and a backup at a valuable position.
