Pluto: Childress, WCO, and the draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
it caps off our defense, we'd have one of the best secondaries in the league.....two shutdown corners would make our defense stronger

I don't buy it...no such thing as a real shutdown corner in today's NFL, it's an impossible feat. There are corners that encourage QBs to throw somewhere else, though. If you throw Darrelle Revis into our secondary, Joe Haden would start to get targeted more and start to seem mediocre. Morris Claiborne would prevent us from getting burned as much as we have with Sheldon, but he's not going to "cap off" our defense.

The New York Giants have used 5 of their last 10 1st round picks on their defensive secondary. Not top 10 picks, but just saying.

The Giants also signed Antrel Rolle, a former first round and top ten pick of the Arizona Cardinals.

No, but I'm not passing on the chance if I get it.

Exactly not saying trade the farm to go up and get him but if RG3 is there you take him. We have plenty of other picks to add to our D which I believe is the route to take. You really want a good receiver we need a vet and there are plenty in FA this year.

I've been signing Claiborne's praises for a very long time. I want RG3 as well, but if he's not there, or the Browns see a major red flag in his game, then they should go elsewhere. I know there will be quite a few people screaming if we don't get him one way, or the other.

How can some of you write off drafting Claiborne though? Having him, and Haden on the field in this pass happy league? Are you kidding me! Teams would love to have one shut down corner like that, let alone two.

Defense still gets it done. Packers and Saints were sitting home watching the SB. The Pats got beat. Sure, we'd all love a franchise QB. No one is saying we don't want one, but there's no guarantees we'll find one.
And at the end of the day, regardless of who your QB is, you still need a team that can stop people.

It might not cap off our defense, but it sure as hell will make us a lot better than we looked. I still maintain the Jets get away with a lot more, because of their shut down corner in Revis, and at least a respectable one in Cromartie. They don't have any 'elite' pass rushers, but they're at least able to take more chances, blitz more, knowing they got guys in the secondary that can hold their position.

Agreed about RG3 or Claiborne having to be the picks. 1A and 1B on my draft board...

MO...

I don't get your argument. 50% of the QB's mentioned above were 1st round draft picks. So your solution is to draft a QB in the 1st round???? As much as I like RGIII, drafting him or any QB in the first round doesn't guarantee anything. It's basically a 50/50 coin flip as to whether he'll be successful. Yes, this is better odds then picking a QB in later rounds, but we will be investing multiple years in developing RGIII, so if he doesn't pan out we've wasted 3 to 4 years of developing a QB. Look at the Jets with Sanchez. He sucks, yet they still keep running him out there because of the investment they put into him. St. Louis has so much invested in Bradford, and if he sucks next year, then what? At least with McCoy, since we only used a 3rd rounder on him, it's OK to replace him after one year with better alternatives.

Hopefully RGIII will be on the right side of the coin and will make this argument moot.

Not sure what is hard to understand. If you have a good/great QB, you will most likely compete. Simple as that. We don't have one. We need one. The only way we will get one is by drafting one.

Wasn't it last years draft everybody wanted Patrick Peterson to fall to us?

So what's the difference with selecting Claiborne this draft?

Nothing, we don't need two top 10 corners. Corner is a position where it is more than possible to find a quality player in the 3rd or even later.

The difference is we probably will have a better shot to take Claiborne. Julio Jones was a top prospecr, but the mocks kind of had him anywhere from top 5-15. Patrick Petersen was locked in as a top 5 pick.

Yea, assuming we get Claiborne, this defnese won't be set until we get a OLB and another pass rusher.

If we get Claiborne it would severely help the pass rush. Having two shut down corners will free up a lot more time to get to the QB for our D-Line.

I have a hard time believing H&H won't have RGIII rated high at the time of the draft. Every analyst has him at least in the top 10 and for those who say drafting a QB that high is too risky..this is a QB league!! We need an elite QB to propel this team forward! You don't generally find elite QBs in the later rounds I think we should commit to RGIII and start building the offense around him.

Last year we had hope that Colt McCoy was the answer at QB. At least everyone knew we were going to give him a go for a full season to find out. Therefore, a CB sounded like a good fit. The difference with this year is Colt McCoy is almost certainly not the answer and no one else on offense at the skill positions looked like they belonged in the league. We need offensive players that's why there is such a push by fans to go offense rather than D.

Every analyst also had Ryan Leaf on par with Peyton Manning.

It doesn't matter what analysts think, all that matters is what H & H think, and if they don't feel he's a franchise guy, then I have absolutely no problem with them passing on him. I trust them enough, especially when it comes to QB's.
