Re: NBA Rumors: Phoenix Suns Interested in Alonzo Gee

Staying on topic, nobody is suggesting that an Alonzo Gee type signing is going to make or break the team. The Cavs need some prime time players; like some quality starters and scorers. The plan seems to be to find them in the draft. Properly managing the role players that surround that core is equally important, and that is where an Alonzo Gee type player becomes an important asset.

I think role players become much more important when a contending core is already in place. Prior to that, a 4m salary to a Gee type could be a hindrance to acquiring contending talent. I think players of Gee's importance are almost always available so it is preferable to put assets and resources towards building that elite core rather than expending them on Gee.

I think Alonzo at 4mil is a very moveable contract though. We'll see how it goes this offseason. Wouldn't be surprised if we have to match a 4mil offer.

Hi Kouki. 4 mil is exactly what the type of player Alonzo is, should warrant. It's like the perfect number. If it's anything other than 4 mil, i will do something bad.

No, you're absolutely wrong. $4m will not be a hinder to our rebuild in any way, and Gee is precisely the kind of player we'd want to pickup for $4m both now and later. So why not get him now?

You don't build a core first, and then pickup role players later. You get both, whenever you can get them, all while rebuilding together. Besides, sometimes you pickup a player thinking he'll be a role player, and he ends up being a core piece. Or, you draft a player thinking he'll be a core piece, and he ends up being role player. Either way, you do both at the same time.

It depends on the length of the contract and how healthy Gee stays during the course of the contract. If he agrees to a short contract with a team option like Pavlovic or Delonte, there is room for him to fail to meet expectations and still be a valuable contract. If they sign him to a long Brian Cardinal contract for the same amount of money, his contract's lack of flexibility can become an albatross.

Agree entirely.

I am just agreeing with you on how much i think Alonzo could be worth on his next contract?

I'm one who, if a team overpays, will gladly let him walk. I'm not quite sold on him yet, he may still regress.

I tried to explain why I think it may be a mistake to get him now. It has a small chance of hamstringing the Cavs from acquiring an important player through free agency or a trade and, in my opinion, a player of Gee's caliber is almost always available. I would rather resources are aimed at the most valuable assets, and not market value for an optimistic backup.

As for the bolded, is that indicating you would like to obtain multiple players of Gee's influence at 4m each?

If multiple players of Gee's age, athleticism, and potential are always available, then please tell me others that we could pick up this year during free agency for $4 million?
