Pujols Meeting with Marlins

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
After 2 years they aren't going to be able pay these contracts once everyone has checked out the new ballpark.

Why? If they were able to sign Pujols and Reyes along with the young guys they already have on the squad, there's going to be a ton of people showing up to games, they're going to sell a ton of jerseys (new uni's, big time Latin players, big market) as well as other merchandise. There will be plenty of money because they'll be good and they'll actually be in a ballpark people want to go to.

Never thought the Marlins would win TWO World Series before the Indians.

They have won 2 World Series in the last 15 years and Miami could not care less. It's not a baseball city. It's not even a sports city. People arive late and leave early when they have the "sexiest" team in the NBA.

Does building a new stadium really provide you with THIS much extra money to spend? I just don't see how.

They've been sitting on the money they get from revenue sharing for years, and I guess now they're deciding to spend it.

I just don't see how Florida baseball teams survive/thrive long-term. Yes, the Marlins will get the first year attendance bump. If they get Pujols that will extend for a couple more years. Look at Tampa and their attendance rates, almost always near the bottom even with a >.500 record. The Marlins have only reached over 2 million fans twice, their first year in '93 and the '97 run. They have only reached 1.8 million four times, '93, '94, '97 '05. Other than have the stadium built on the beach and having women tan in centerfield, interest will wane off.

Florida being a state where a lot of people move to/from depending on the economy and age, there are too many fans who root for other teams than the Marlins/Rays. Last time I went to Tropicana Field when the Indians played, there were just as many Indians gear as Rays. Forget about Boston/NY/Atlanta/Cubs games. Maybe spring training and all the minor league teams with the affiliates hurt as well.

You act like it is a bad thing that there is a large diversity in the fans in Florida. Isn't that a good thing? Seems like there would be more ticket sales that way. You have your Miami fans who get season tickets perhaps and then you have your visiting team fans who snatch up the tickets for that series of games. The Marlins don't care who's buying the tickets so long as they sell them.

And they also don't care that Miami fans are "bad" fans. If they want to show up in the 3rd inning and leave in the 8th inning, or not come at all, so what? The organization doesn't care much, they still sold the ticket for the price of a full game which ends up paying for the massive contracts they might end up having to pay.

The Miami market has never supported the Marlins in the time they have been there. The fans barely showed up back when Huizenga was dumping money into the team, and it remains a huge 'if' that they will also show up after they open this new stadium. There are a number of reasons for people's apathy towards the newly christened Miami Marlins, and Loria is one of those reasons. Guarantee you, if his spending causes issues with him getting revenue-sharing dollars and he isn't seeing the profit he hopes to make, he will be in full firesale mode after 3 years. I have to agree with b00bie at this point on Pujols, this is just a publicity stunt- otherwise, why advertise that an offer has been made? All the Marlins are doing is starting the market for him. If they were really intent on gaining his services, they would be playing this close to the vest- at least the part about offering him a contract. This is now about trying to sell the fans on him making an effort. I don't doubt the Marlins want Reyes and Beurhle (who is going to be a bargain for some NL team on a two-year deal) and the reasons for the Marlins being interested in Cespedes are obvious with the Cubano pop in Miami, but the Pujols thing is posturing at this point. Albert's other options would have to be taxed for that to happen, and with the public way the Marlins have handled his courting it does sound like a ploy to me.

Rangers made offer to Pujols

MLB UPDATE - Texas Rangers have reportedly made a substantial offer to FA 1st Baseman Albert Pujols.

Just 6 days ago Nolan Ryan said this:

“We truly believe Mitch’s career is ahead of him,” said Ryan. “Making a seven-or-eight year deal for Fielder or Pujols is not something our organization is prepared to do. I very much expect Mitch Moreland to be our first baseman next year.”

It is possible the Rangers have done a complete about-face, and have decided to address the loss of CJ Wilson and their starting pitching issue by throwing gobs of money at Pujols... but I am doubting it.

Look at that, I'm an insider.

Why is it that some members just have to mock and put down other members in here? What the hell is up with that?

What is wrong with a member posting a twitter statement that confirms something? So what if we knew it "might" be coming? Now it's confirmed.

I'm getting pretty damn sick and tired of a few in here acting like everyone else is below them. When push comes to shove those who think they are better than everyone else are really the members who flat out stink most of the time.

Stop with the belittling and smart remarks when most anyone makes a post in these threads. The quickest way to run off members of ANY type forums on the internet is to have a scant few who always act like no one else comes close to their level of knowledge and expertise. You're not all that. Stop acting like you are.

Actually, it hasn't been confirmed.

And also, incarceratedbob is not a member here.

Damn. I thought he was. Actually, I'd bet cash incarceratedbob is indeed a member in here. We might be quite surprised who all are members in here.
