Pujols Meeting with Marlins

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm a Miami Dolphins fan so know a little bit about that market -

The Dolphins will always be #1. It is similar to the Browns here - except even their #1 option can't draw very well. The Heat are the sexy team right now (just like the Cavs in their time here), but if the Dolphins (ever) put together a good team, everyone will be right back on their bandwagon.

Basketball is definitely the #2 - but even with the current team you hear them talk about the Wade and Alonzo Mourning in more glowing terms than they do the current roster.

And then there is baseball.

The fan support would drop off almost immediately after the new car smell of the stadium wore off.

Just like it would here in Cleveland.

Don't ever compare the Cleveland sports fan base to Miami's again...apples and oranges...

I prefaced it by saying "but even their #1 can't draw very well"

And even with that - we're in the baseball thread - I don't know how boastful we want to get about fan bases.

In terms of how they view their teams, it is very much a watered down Cleveland. Football #1 no matter what, with baseball and basketball alternating based on which team is better at that time.

The main difference being that even when their #1 team (the Phins) is good, their fans still suck.

@allsportsintel and @incarceratedbob both have reported it

boobie what dumbass comments are u make today besides the one u made to me

God damn it can we please stop quoting this ass clown? Heath puts this guy to shame...

Reports surfacing the marlins believe Pujols is older than he claims.

Great pitch Mr. Loria.

Pujols' wife on why they left. YOU MUST READ THIS:
Albert Pujols' wife Diedre, in an interview with a radio station with ties to the former St. Louis Cardinals slugger, said the couple was prepared to take less money to stay in St. Louis, but were greatly disappointed when the team initially offered him a five-year deal.

Thursday, Albert Pujols signed a 10-year, $254 million offer with the Los Angeles Angels that contained no deferred money, as well as a 10-year personal services contract following that deal. The Cardinals' last offer to Pujols was for 10 years and $210 million, with $30 million deferred.

"The offer that people have seen on television I want to tell you what, listeners especially, had that offer been given to us with a guarantee, we would have the (Cardinals) bird on our back," Diedre Pujols told 99.1 Joy FM, a St. Louis-area Christian station that received some of its initial funding from Albert Pujols.

Diedre Pujols, speaking with interviewer Sandi Brown, who is her friend, said the couple initially had no plans to ever leave St. Louis or the Cardinals, the only team the first baseman had ever played for.

"When it all came down, I was mad. I was mad at God because I felt like all the signs that had been being played out through the baseball field, our foundation, our restaurant, the Down Syndrome Center, my relationships, my home, my family close," Diedre Pujols told the station. "I mean, we had no reason, not one reason, to want to leave. People were deceived by the numbers."

She indicated the key moment was the Cardinals' initial offer of five years and $130 million.

"When you have somebody say 'We want you to be a Cardinal for life' and only offer you a five-year deal, it kind of confused us," Diedre Pujols said. "Well, we got over that insult and felt like Albert had given so much of himself to baseball and into the community ... we didn't want to go through this again."

Diedre Pujols told the station the negative reaction in St. Louis over her husband's decision to sign with the Angels has been striking.

"Albert has never lied. People are like 'Oh, we thought we knew who he was.' Well, we thought we knew who they were," she told the station.

"The city of St. Louis has absolutely been deceived and I have never seen hatred spread so fast and I understand why," she added. "Let me say that Albert and I never, not one time, ever made plans to leave this city."

Diedre Pujols also said she had no ill will toward the Cardinals or owner Bill DeWitt and that she understands the fans' frustration with her husband's decision.

"It's just like God," she said at the end of the interview, "to put us on a team called the Angels."

I'll save everyone the trouble. $130 mil for 5 years is $26 million a year. AND THEY WERE OFFENDED BY IT!

Well, it is a pretty shitty offer. Let's just be real.

When in comparison to what he got from LA. To not even get up to 6-7 years....says alot IMO about how much they really wanted to keep him.

Makes sense though, no DH...

Well, to be fair, she seemed to indicate they were offended by the length of the deal, not necessarily the amount.

However, I do agree with your basic point. That's pretty ridiculous that she's trying to spin this to make them look like the good guys when they turned down $26 million a year in what was an amazing (and smart with the 5 years) offer. Does she really think they'll get the fans' sympathy from this?

Ugh, I hate athletes

A shitty offer?! WOW. Just wow, please tell me you're joking...

Yeah, I get that. And if other teams are offering 10 years, I can see why getting just 5 from the Cards would offend them...

Still. $26 mil?!?!? But it seems we agree.

The market decides what is a good offer and what is a shitty offer, not what regular everyday "average" people like me and you consider to be a lot of money. Half the years equals half the financial security (I know, I know) and half the money.

Shitty offer.

it wasn't shitty offer from a fiscal position of the Cardinals

in 5 years he will be 36, look at the production of any athlete when he is over that age.

the Angels WAY overpaid for him, much in the same way they did in acquiring Vernon Wells.

the offer wasn't shitty, The Cards weren't overpaying later for someone who is a a star now

compare Thome's performance after 36 and see how much the Cards would be giving away or rather risking in an NL market

the Cards should have initially offered 6 years with a club option of 7, but to say it is shitty is yet another example of some here to overstate things

You're TOTALLY miss the point, so badly it's almost funny.

The offer is shitty from Pujols' perspective because it's half the years for half the money for half the financial security, and that is all that matters. If you are Pujols, do you even consider taking that offer?

Yes! Because he owes it to St. Louis and said he wanted to stay!

:king:
