Quinn Cook?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I would definitely say it's splitting hairs. He made a huge improvement in his shooting from his frosh year and never regressed. As far as i'm concerned you can throw that first year out seeing how well he shot his final three years and continues to shoot now. There are a few things I really look for when I look at shooting form and he checks all the boxes and has the good stats to match it. I'm pretty comfortable in my belief that he is an excellent shooter.

Fair enough. I hope to god he's successful and finds a place in the league, be it with the Cavs or elsewhere.

He's not particularly tall.

He's not particularly fast or quick.

He's not an incredible athlete.

He's not an incredible shooter.

He's 22.

Quinn doesn't have any of the superlatives that translate to a draft pick.

He just happens to be a really good overall player who works hard, can shoot, can pass, and can defend without making mistakes.

Sounds like another Delly to me. I'll take it.

He doesn't have the physicality of Delly. So he won't be able to switch onto bigs and do the Delly-annoy-the-f-out-of-em thing. But I'd argue he can bring some things to the offense that Delly can't, and he might be able to stay w/ PG's better, as he really moves his feet well now (NBA draft combine be damned...).

I suspect he just meant that he wasn't drafted but is a solid bench prospect.

Ah, ok. I was thinking more along the lines of comparing them wrt what they can bring to the table as PG's, as they were both underrated for largely similar reasons (albeit Delly is taller), and under largely similar circumstances as seniors.

You were right. I've never seen Cook play because I don't follow college ball, except occasionally the-school-that-shall-not-be-named in this forum since I'm affiliated with it... Your description did sound a lot like Delly, though, which was the reason for my response.

Probably wont last here but he definitly got some eyes put on himself.

I really liked him and believe that he is definitely an NBA level talent.

I don't really know if we need another guard though, even with Shump being out.
I would rather we sign a SF.

But yeah, he should definitely be playing NBA bball.

hes one of those classic 'does everything well, but nothing great' point guards. They need to find a home to stick in the league as they dont have a calling card. I dont think the cavs are the place for him. Although if he goes to canton im sure someone else will call on him when they need a third guard on the cheap

Even if the kid doesn't make the team maybe they'll be able to keep him away from Eurpope/Asia and get him to join the Charge.

I'd like to keep all 5 of the invites that don't make the team around.

We ought to keep him until we're confident in Kyrie. Mo and Delly alone make me nervous. I also think that with Shump out Delly might in some ways be better as a defensive specialist 2-guard. He's not the greatest at bringing the ball up.

He's not going to make the team for a reason you said in your post...Shump being out ...

We have 2 legit PGs who can hold the spot down until Kyrie gets back in Mo and Delly, and our best player is our PG for the majority of the time anyways. We aren't hurting at PG as much as people think when you factor LeBron in, and I also think we only see 2-3 weeks with no Kyrie.

Keeping an additional wing makes more sense than keeping what would be a 5th PG right now. Outside of JR, LBJ, and RJ, not much there to be confident in on the wing with Shump out. Like the kid, but I think you are going to be seeing him in wine and gold in Canton and not Cleveland. Shump getting hurt put the nail in his coffin IMO.

Don't give me this drive-by disagree BS @gratefuldead ...say why you disagree and keep the discussion going instead of being passive aggressive...

As much as I want to see Cook make the team (he's one of my all-time favorite Duke players), I just don't see it from a roster perspective. The Cavs didn't even keep Tyus Jones, who was enough better at running Duke's team that he caused Cook to move to the 2 spot. I understand that there are other considerations now with Kyrie out, but it's not worth signing a guy so he can be the 3rd or 4th option for a few weeks until Kyrie's return.

Or not. I'll expand on why I don't think he makes the team.

We are 1 injury away from being extremely thin on the wing with Shump already out. We already only have 3 options at the wing (LBJ, JR, RJ) that don't scare the shit out of us (Harris). So 3 legit options we feel good about at 2 positions...that's walking a fine line right there.

And now I know everyone will come back about my injury concerns on the wing and say "yeah, but Delly can play SG". Sure, Delly can play SG...but only during situational minutes...Delly won't last the entire year if he has to play heavy minutes at the 2 spot when teams run bigger lineups.

It's nothing personal about Quinn and I'm not saying the guy sucks. Looking at this in a vacuum, he would be the guy out of the 6 I would want to keep, and I'll get to why in a second. But it's pretty obvious, at least to me, that if (cause it still isn't a given we carry 15 into the regular season) we keep one of the non-guaranteed guys, its going to be one of Day, Cunningham, or Stephens, just because of how the roster looks right now.

That being said, I think you see Cook in Canton logging a lot of professional minutes, which will be good for him. Hopefully he doesn't get picked up by anyone, cause I think on the off chance that we lose Delly next off-season he could be the guy who takes over that roster spot, or at least one that fights for it again.

Don't confuse me saying he won't make the team with me thinking he isn't good enough. I don't think that's the case at all.
