I hate to say it, but that Wally/Ben for Shaq trade that we passed up at the deadline? Yeah ... Shaq may not have Howard's quickness, but he could definitely get him in foul trouble, and he's certainly strong enough to hold his own against Superman. Getting him have been worth the "team chemistry" risk, IMHO.
And just imagine with the Chinese investors deal going through, I'm sure that lessened the load of Shaq's contract.
I don't give a shit if Shaq makes fun of every single person in Cleveland and doesn't play back to back games. I don't care if LeBron hates him, hell he passed the ball to Drew fu(king Gooden, he'll pass the ball to anyone.
It's a results-oriented business and our executive decided to apply a coat of "chemistry", our coach decided to apply a coat of "stay the course" dumbass-substitutions and lack of offense, and our players decided to put a coat of "fail" on this turd.
But surely now that we've "learned our lesson" we can move forward, right? The lessons we should have learned included that Mike Brown is a stubborn coach that doesn't apply pressure to his superstar, doesn't make correct adjustments, and doesn't have a creative offense. If he was on a losing team he'd be long gone.
Another lesson is that talent > chemistry. If Amare, Bosh, Shaq, ....FU(KING ANYONE! was a pipe dream during trade deadline, what are they now? No chance, that's what.
"But Powerslave, how could you blame Ferry - you don't know the details of what happened! waahh". We all knew as much as we needed to know. Wine and Gold, while being an optimist, gave us a fair evaluation during trade deadline that instilled hope into this forum. Is it his fault? No. I'm sure the coaching staff and other Cavs insiders were just as stoked at the prospect of an expiring contract and many trades to ponder. My bitch is that Ferry didn't try hard enough: every trade we heard it was a "our offer is ___. no? okay talk to you 1 min before trade deadline time". If we were dealing with all-stars or even the right player (Camby), Ferry should have offered Wally, Gibson, picks, money, and even AV if it was for the now "no chance in hell" players. Hell, literally everyone but Bron, Mo, Delonte, should have been up in discussion. Instead he straight up pussied out.
I swear it seems like key figureheads in the Cavs organization are scared of making a move, doing the wrong thing, getting LeBron upset. We're treating him like the messiah who's never wrong instead of giving him great pieces to work with and coaching him to elevate his game to a higher level.
I think what's one of the most frustrating is that it's the same...fu(king..thing year after year. My buddy just got home from vacation and he's a casual NBA fan.
Him: "Hey man how's your team and all?"
Me: "We're out"
Him: "Why?"
Me: "Bron couldn't do it himself"
Him:"WTF? Isn't that what happened last year?"
Me: "And the year before..."
For fu*k's sakes. I hate this story. The "Cavs are a 1 man team" storyline being played over and over again. LeBron was the best player he has been in his career this season and it is all wasted.
I'm not going to bitch in any other thread and will support this team but if we come into 2009-2010 season with a similar team I'm not watching as many regular season games. Why? Am I less of a fan for doing so? I don't give a shit what you think. Fact of the matter is, I don't want to see the same mistakes happen over and over. What's stopping Cavs fans from watching the new season and thinking how much help LeBron will get come Playoff time? I'll probably be seen as a casual fan and check stats like who on the bench is averaging how many points, what's the Cavs record against elite teams, is MB still coaching there? I think we've hit the MB ceiling, we're not going higher.
Instead, I'll be watching new and evolving teams: teams with intelligent coaches and executives willing to take a risk, teams getting better every single season, teams aching for a championship and DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
I'm looking forward to Wine and Gold's next offseason post to see where we go from here. Now I am a self-proclaimed pessimist, but there's no way I'm alone in thinking this: the future looks bleak.
