Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I would say Steve Albini had more to do with Nirvana's sound than Nirvana themselves. Steve Albini is quite an impressive producer/engineer - he will be the first to say he is more of an engineer than a producer. He refuses to have any credits on albums and does not take royalties - he only charges a flat fee (rare/unheard of!). Albini was used by Nirvana because, Albini recorded The Pixies, which was a huge influence on them. Albini's approach is doing all the recording live and not on seperate tracks individually. He finds the best sound from the room through creative mic placements and not necessarily on the instruments themselves. That is how Nirvana got "their" sound.

Disclaimer: I am not a Nirvana fan but, more of a fan of Albini (look him up, he is a legit cat). I hate how a band like Nirvana gets so much credit for "changing music" and ushering in a "new sound". They ripped off The Pixies, Stooges and Bad Brains and got all the credit for this "new sound" when it was all being done but, not in front of a pop audience. Nirvana did not bring back the Neve console - it was used before them and still used today along with digital and analog recording platforms. It is a staple of any recording engineers analog/outboard gear. It is timeless and incredibly expensive (for a good reason).
albini is a regular on another forum i frequent and did an AMA before they became a "thing" due to reddit.

there is still an archive available and it's a really interesting read. link here

ctrl+f 'electrical' and it's an easy read

No, Nirvana brought the popularity of Sound City back. They were booked solid after Nirvana recorded there. Of course they didn't go into detail of all the recording of the "Nevermind" album. But that after it's release, an all but dead Sound City was popular.

Dave Grohl now owns the board and did an album with artists that used to record in Sound City. What I liked the most about the documentary is that you actually got to see footage of recording sessions with Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, and Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac.

my apologies, i misinterpreted what you stated. If the credit is for bringing Sound City back to life and not various Neve consoles, then that makes more sense.

I apologize for coming of a bit snotty. I grew up in the thick of the Nirvana craze and could not understand it/hated it. That is one band that just annoys/irritates this piss out of me.

RoboCrap - 3 / 10

Never underestimate the power of hollywood to turn a classic movie into a crappy remake. The only reason it got 3 is cos of 1* for CGI, 1 * for Gary Oldman and 1* for Michael Keaton. Eagerly awaiting its adult version RoboCock.:chuckles:

Not shocked by the review. I had no idea that Oldman and Keaton were in this. Anytime you hear that Hollywood is rebooting something, 11/10 it's going to be bad. You just know Hollywood doesn't want to think out of the box. It's easier to re-do classic films. They better not touch "The Breakfast Club".

Escape Plan.

Meh. I guess it was a decent enough action movie, but it didn't seem to realize that it should have been funnier. If you're putting two terrible actors like Stallone and Arnold into a cheesy prison break film, let them ham it up with hilarious one-liners. Have Arnold throw someone over a railing and say "drop dead" for god's sake! The one-liners they did try to throw in there were also bad and not funny. It shouldn't be hard to write one-liners! The bottom line is that a bad action movie with Arnold and Stallone should have been far more entertaining than the movie I watched. 4/10

Forks Over Knives - 6/10

useful documentary on western diet but the presentation was poor. Must watch for people trying to lose weight or maintain their weight. It is ther in netflix.

if someone is trying to lose weight they'd be much better off spending that 90min learning about caloric content of foods and caloric expenditures as opposed to watching a vegan circle jerk.

anyway, got my hands on inside llewyn davis. really excited to finally watch that :)

Wow... I really wanted to see this. I'm a huge fan of RoboCop! The original (Director's Cut) is one of my favorite action movies. Shit's insane. I thought this would be a great reboot. Sad to hear it didn't turn out so well.

And regarding reboots, the Dredd reboot was not only great, it was far better than the original; but I do understand that is surely the exception and not the rule.

I've been watching the documentaries nominated for the Oscars this year and watched Dirty Wars tonight. I'd give it a 8/10 and I think there's a very good chance it wins Best Doc. Very interesting journey by Jeremy Scahill & I'd recommend giving it a watch.

the act of killing was incredible

'stories we tell', 'the crash reel' and 'blackfish' were all on the oscar shortlist and quite good. 1st and 3rd arguably both hugely snubbed in the actual oscars (no women allowed obvs:dunno:)

That's next on my list... Gotta make sure I watch it before the Oscars.

I couldn't finish The Act of Killing because it began to bore me. It just seemed like old guys glorifying their murder over and over. Does anything more fascinating happen? I got maybe a third of the way through.

YES. absolutely must watch in its entirety.

edit: should note i watched the theatrical version; directors cut is 30 some minutes longer and presumably a bit boring at some points (tho i do hope to watch it at some point, esp for the commentary)

The Stallone based Dredd was supposed to be a non-sensical summer action movie, which was never taken seriously. The new one showed promise but I don't think there was enough box office collection to warrant a sequel. Could also be because it was not PG-13 and hence not many kids came to watch it (losers!).

everyone itt should be seeing this on the 14th whether it's in the theater or rent/bought/torrented online. first 2min:
