Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Just on another movie I thought was a huge let down: What did everyone think of Man Of Steel?

Loved it.. I don't understand what people expected, it's a movie about an alien baby from the planet Krypton. It is what it should have been. They made it serious, but still, it's a superhero movie.

Again, I thought it was great. Folks wanted TDK 2.0 and I really didn't think that would work.

Watched a lot of movies this week because I didn't have Internet at my new apartment, until today. So, here are my quick thoughts on them:

Man of Steel 5/10

Mildly enjoyable, it's pretty average. It seemed like it wanted to be epic but just wasn't. The fights just were nowhere near as entertaining as I thought they'd be. I'm not a superhero guy and know jack shit about Superman though so take it for what it's worth. So little stuff did not bother me like Superman doing you-know-what at the end. Not too much to say about this film, to be honest. It was just meh.

3 Days to Kill 6/10

Costner is good. Everything else? Pretty average. Movie is borderline cheesy at some points (femme fatale stunningly gorgeous CIA agent, come on) but also had a couple pretty enjoyable action sequences. Overall just seemed kind of clunky, like lots of ideas thrown in and not really fleshed out. The family man sideplot was...awkward at times, charming at others. The ending was just bizarre. Also annoying how every time he started chasing the bad guys his health issues (trying to be vague so no spoilers) would act up. I swear it happened like 3-4 times. Still not a bad film, I was definitely entertained.

Ender's Game 7/10

Okay people are going to disagree, but I'm a big fan of the book and I went in expecting this to suck so much reprehensible cracked out hooker ass and came out...pleasantly surprised. I had a lot of fun. Some of the effects were pretty cool. This has to be one of the hardest books to put on film, as it's hard to take so many child/teen actors seriously but they did a solid job I thought. I actually found Ford as Graff to be one of the weaker links, I think they could have done a lot better. I think this story would be better told as a 10 episode miniseries but then the special effects would have suffered. I say this because I think it was too short even though it had to be 2 hours long (too lazy to check). Only showed like, 2-3 battles on screen. Like, that is such a huge portion of the story and they really hardly show the zero G battles. But what they did show was a lot of fun. Would have liked a more fleshed out Peter/Valentine as well as Wiggin/Bean stuff, but like I said it's hard to get everything onto screen. At the end of the day it's an above average movie, a solid adaptation of a book that was always going to be extremely hard to put on the big screen. Truth be told, I can't imagine them doing much better than this with Ender's Game with the standard 2 hour film, so kudos to the director, actors, and production team.

Star Trek Into Darkness 7/10

Again, I'm not a Trekkie at all, so please...spare me. I liked the first one a lot, and I liked this one too, albeit a bit less. Great effects, cool fights (loved Khan vs the Klingons, damn) although the plot lost me a few times probably since I don't know shit about Star Trek. Khan was a cool villain. Loved Spock's "Khaaaaaaan!" :chuckles: But yeah. Like MoS, not much to say about this film, but I definitely enjoyed it. It's just a fun movie, plot isn't heavy hitting despite a few emotional moments (
Look, Kirk dying would have been way sadder if it wasn't stupidly obvious that they were going to revive him with Khan's blood, but whatever
) and in general it's probably a "Turn your mind off" type of flick similar to the first one. But sci fi is a shitload of fun, the sights and action are cool, Spock/Kirk are a terrific duo, etc. Decent film.

The Wolf of Wall Street 9.5/10

Can't say enough good things about this one. I have no idea how it eluded me for so long but I finally Redboxed it and was enthralled for 3 hours. DiCaprio is one of my favorite actors, I have yet to see a film of his that I didn't love (Blood Diamond, Inception, The Departed, Gangs of New York, add in Wolf of Wall Street ... okay, Body of Lies wasn't that great). I should just stop being surprised at his fantastic performances and start to expect them, I guess. At the end of the day I felt like I had seen similar plots to Wolf (yes, I know it's based on a true story) in other movies about the rise and fall of certain criminals, but the black comedy aspect of this one was just hilarious. I can't get over what a fucking degenerate piece of shit Belfort was portrayed as here, and some scenes just had me cringing because of how pathetic and sad the character was, but then the scene would change and I would be laughing at his ridiculousness. Performances were great across the board. Props to Jonah Hill, especially in a supporting role. I thought Matthew McConaughey was actually going to be big in the film but he was in it for like 5 minutes, but those 5 minutes were hysterical. At some point, between the midget tossing, plane orgies, office orgies, pissing on documents in the work place, copious amounts of blow and pills, and other debauchery, I thought it would get old eventually. It never did. Thought this was one of the better films I've seen in a long time. Oh, and DiCaprio's wife was hot. as. fuck.

I'm with you here brotha, I don't get the hate for this movie. It's well acted and it's Superman's origin story. It just suffers because the origin story isn't quite as cool as Batman's.

And also because Superman is a more boring character than Batman. It's a lot easier to sell darkness and angst than it is to sell a pretty-boy like Superman.

Then, they should just do the "Injustice: Gods Among Us" story line instead. We'd get to see all kinds of darkness and angst from our resident Boy Scout superhero. :chuckles:

Goon - Go watch this movie. I enjoyed everything about it.

Raising Victor Vargus - Solid movie, not amazing but definitely not bad either.

When I came out of the theater I felt sooo pissed that words could not express my frustration. When I go to see a movie in theater and it is bad - I just hate the movie, the actors the directors - who ever I feel made this movie suck. But there are some movies that are so bad that they make me hate myself for watching it. This is one of them.

To be honest, for me it wasn't so much that the original story doesn't translate as well to the modern day big-screen as well as Batman. I thought there was very little back story (which I would've expected for a reboot), the dialogue was poor, too much focus on fight sequence and special effects and I really did detest the ease to which they made Lois bend over backwards for Superman without any legitimate justification. Couple that with the fact that the entire planet was basically destroyed - the very thing Superman is suppose to prevent - and you've got too many things that just don't sit well with me AS a pretty big Superman fan.

Oh, it wasn't that bad. Come on.

If I'd never read the book I'd probably have thought it was terrible. Maybe I just appreciated that they tried to put a very difficult adaptation to screen. I don't think that story could ever be put to film successfully, I just didn't think this effort was a total travesty or lost cause. The effects were there, and the battle room sequences were about what I expected even though there were only like two of them. Thought the twist was pulled off surprisingly well at the end too (was expecting it to be awful) although what came AFTERWARDS was not good at all.

Could have been so much worse.

Oddly enough, I expected universal opinion to be that it was just horrible, but a peek at Rotten Tomatoes shows it at a solid 60%. Interesting.

Chris, the Star Trek reboots are God awful.... just sayin'.

I don't judge action movies like the Academy.
