What may effect you may mean nothing to me. What's the biggest deal in the world may seem silly to you. In other words, just because you think or feel a certain way doesn't mean everyone else does as well. If you literally cannot get out of bed because you're so depressed, that sure as shit would keep you from earning your million dollar paycheck.

Sounds like White wants to add a new clause to the special contract insisted on a few months back that allows Whites's doctor to change his work conditions at any time. 1) you can't change an NBA contract without voiding the existing contract. If they void the existing contract, White bacomes a free agent. 2) I don't think the CBA will let you have a contract where a player's doctor can unilaterally change the trems of employment.

But I'm not a lawyer.

According to a person with knowledge of the talks between White and the team, White has refused to play or practice until the Rockets agree in writing to an addendum to his contract that he has written. That kind of addition to a player contract would conflict with the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement with the players’ association.

Though White has not publicly specified the conditions he would need to practice or play, he has indicated through his tweets he wants players to be able to choose the doctors who would then be given the authority to determine players’ work environment and expectations. If the Rockets agreed to that in writing, it would violate the CBA.

The Rockets have told White and his agent, Andrew Vye, that they want to work with him on a plan he can accept. They have maintained in conversations with White that they have worked with doctors who do not insist, as White has maintained in statements and on Twitter, that doctors should have authority to determine White’s work requirements

No question White is saddled with a severe problem... and it is clearly denigrating the golden opportunity he has in the NBA. It isn't the first time, won't be the last time that an outside factor will or could end a promising career in professional sports... but come on... there has to be some workable solution here.

The team is clearly invested and wants him to be productive... they indeed might not have his absolute best interest as #1 priority (he said/she said)... but they also have access to top quality professional help both psychological and medical and probably pharmaceutical. They have or can provide private jets or limo rides to closer road games.They have million$ of reasons to want a solution... and the hard fact is they also don't want to waste a draft pick


From White's side... he is getting paid. Not to play. Good deal if you can get two years guaranteed at +1.5 million per... how did they handle this in college? I understand that bus rides are most common... but the team had to fly occasionally, right? What did he/they do? And other than him trying to outline how poorly his needs are being considered, I haven't heard what his specific proposal is to a working solution. Has anyone read/heard what he thinks would be the best solution? He certainly cannot be proposing only playing home games can he? I mean, who does he think he is, Phil Jackson? What does he think needs to be done?

Royce's problems clearly go way beyond how he's going to get to his next game. The Rockets expectation seems to be that he works through these problems and figures out a way to earn his paycheck. If that means playing in the NBADL in the short term where he can ride buses, then so be it. Royce, otoh, seems to expect his condition be accommodated ... and that there's no "magic pill" that's going to let him function normally.

Looks like it's going to end up in the laps of the lawyers and arbitrators.

This type of person doesn't need to be in the NBA anyways...People with strong mental health issues are just most likely not equipped in handling the profession properly--which, Mr White is demonstrating right now as he fly's off the handle...

Just like an NBA team is not gonna sign or draft a wheelchair player with one leg due to their physical limitations--I don't see why drafting or signing a player with mental/emotional limitations is the way to go either ??

Kinda like Delonte in a way... The production and pros is just not gonna outweigh the cons more than likely... Not to mention he's not worth the hassle anyways.. He's a nice player, but is a tweener and got away with playing a point forward/sf/pf position in college... Kinda like Caron Butler in a way, but a bit heavier and just not really equipped to play the SF in the NBA and is not a good enough rebounder, defender, or post player to play the 4...

I dont think Delonte ever lined up at PF in college, that 6'3 just wasnt quite enough there.

Please, I said he should "Man up," and I stand by that comment. I never expressed any factual knowledge, and my opinion is based on what information is out there. Concisely, that White has an opportunity to make millions, yet he keeps claiming his health is at stake. Well frankly, I don't believe him. If he's so deathly afraid of flying, and deathly afraid of playing in the D-League and deathly afraid of not starting in the NBA, then he should not have entered the NBA draft.

He was disingenuous and I have no sympathy for him. The NBA should void his contract. Excuse me, but sometimes people have to fight through adversity. Pick yourself up by your bootstraps, and work through it. And if he cannot, if it is simply beyond his ability, then he should have made that expressly clear to the Rockets prior to being drafted. "I cannot fly with the team, period. Not ever."

Has absolutely nothing to do with what I said. I will reiterate: "fear" would not keep me from a million dollar payday. There are people who march onto a battlefield to fight and die for nothing, they do this and come home and cannot even get a job. We're talking about flying on an airplane. Again, I am not saying it is impossible for him to be so afraid of flying that he simply cannot bring himself to do it, my point is that he did not make this clear to the Rockets organization, and surely he knew he could never fly. And now he can't play in the D-League, etc. Okay Mr. White, time to part ways. But I guarantee he'll seek arbitration and a settlement so he can get a payday, without having earned it.

See it's not all about health. There will be a lawsuit.

Sometimes people need not to be coddled. I have no sympathy for Royce White. I don't. As I see it, he should have never entered the NBA Draft. He is not a child, and he entered into a contract with the Rockets in an agreement to perform a service. That service is to play basketball. If he cannot do such, then he has caused irreparable harm to the Rockets organization in the loss of their draft pick by misrepresentation. I'm not saying he should be held liable, but as an adult, we should at least hold him accountable. Again, he needs to man up and take responsibility for his own life. It is NOT the Rocket's responsibility to do so.

Royce White Reportedly Close to Officially Re-Joining Houston Rockets

Royce White is officially on pace to become an active member of the Houston Rockets.

According to Jonathan Feigan of Ultimate Rockets, the team and White are reportedly close to reaching a mutual agreement that will allow him to return to the hardwood:

Rookie forward Royce White is close to returning to the Rockets and to reporting to their D-League affiliate.

In a call in to a morning show on 97.9 The Box, White said he plans to report to the D-League on Feb. 11, pending “paper work” on a plan with the team.

According to a person with knowledge of the plan, the Rockets are close to making an announcement in which White would return to the team under a written agreement that includes key elements of the protocols that White wanted to have as an addendum to his contract. That agreement would not, however, give authority for decision-making to an individual outside the organization, as White wanted.

Anyone who has followed the ongoing saga between White and the Rockets understands how big of a breakthrough this is.

For months, the rookie forward and Houston have stood at a tactical stalemate. White has publicly lashed out at the organization and the protocol taken to accommodate those with mental health issues in general. All the while, the Rockets have remained publicly supportive on their end but refused to admit any wrongdoing on their behalf.

Communications seemed to have broken down entirely when White created a blueprint for his return that he made public, one in which he reiterated the Rockets must make major concessions.

Though the presence of a proposed solution would normally help stifle the ambiguity plaguing this ordeal, the collective resentment for how the situation had been handled thus far suggested otherwise.

Somewhat surprisingly, it seems to have had the complete opposite effect.

For the first time all season, White himself (via Feigan) seems sure he's on the verge of joining his comrades:

White seemed optimistic that the agreement would be in place shortly.

“The resolution, when I say we’re in the 12th hour, what I literally mean is we’re in the 12th hour...any hour now this thing will be over,” White said. “I’m supposed to be returning to the D-league on February 11. That was the plan. We’ll see if it finally goes through but last thing I heard was that’s what we’re going to do, that’s what we’re planning to do. Waiting on everybody to get the right paperwork done and stuff.

“Everybody wants to make it seem like wild, wild west standoff between me and the Rockets. That’s not the case here. There has been an issue that’s been identified. Mental health is not descriptive enough in CBA (collective bargaining agreement) and UPC (uniform player contract.) It being so vague makes us make it up as we go. There’s no protocol. We need to rectify that to make sure the environment is safe. If we’re making it up as we go, that’s probably not the safest thing.”

While White attempts to downplay the gravity of what has taken place between him and the Houston organization, this is the first hint of true assurance we have detected from either party.

It's also the first we've actually heard of White making concessions of his own. Not only does he seem open to figuring the rest of the solution out on the fly, but he has backed down off his request that someone "outside the organization" be given the "authority" to decide whether he was fit to play.

That both White and the Rockets were willing to compromise and hash out a resolution figures to be a huge victory. Houston is the youngest team in the NBA and will welcome the presence of another versatile talent once White regains form in the D-League.

Most importantly, this represents a huge breakthrough in the barriers that exist between the Association and mental illness. White's case is an unprecedented one and for most of the year, this conflict was dissected in a manner that implied his career could be over before it even started.

With this recent news coming out of Houston, though, it seems more likely this is a tale destined for a happy ending—for White, the Rockets and the future of the NBA in general.
