Samardo Samuels: Thoughts Observations and Projections

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Well, regardless, his problem was his attitude far more than his actual performance.

Wasn't he in the group of players, along with Casspi and a couple others, that were having a tough time learning the offense? Combine that with being out of shape, coupled with a coach's demand for defense and hustle, and it would not take much to put a young player in a funk. I am not trying to make up excuses for him, but I am also not going to run him through the mud without know the details of the situation.

Didn't Samardo do the same thing last year?

He doesn't need a body makeover, he needs a brain makeover.

Who cares about end-of-the-bench trash.

Actually, it sounds like he got a "brain makeover", and some players do grow up especially when faced with the fact they could be playing in the league earning millions or riding buses and making "chump change".

We'll just have to see ...

It's one thing to realize what you need to do, and it's another to do it.

He sounds like he's getting his mindset in the right direction. Doing the small things the coach wants and focusing on the defensive side of the ball and rebounding. The scoring (because of his skill) will come to him if he does some of the smaller stuff consistently.

It also sounds like Coach Scott will balance the use of Samardo interexchanged with Leuer and roll with Samuels at the five during certain rotations as well. I like our depth for our bigs since we KNOW Anderson is going to get hurt at somepoint during the year.

Samardo is the classic example of a guy who has good natural ability, but lacks the mental qualities to be consistently good. He has NBA level talent...but the jury's still out on whether he can lock in mentally - he comes off as pretty flakey and unfocused. he'll probably have a decent career as journeyman 3rd string PF. i can see him bouncing around to a lot of teams over the next 5 years. I love his post skills...every few games he shows flashes of being a force in the paint.

He's not a guy you want playing significant minutes if your goal is to be a contending team.

Thought: He cannot inbound a ball during a press.

Sam Sam looked like terrible tonight. It's still preseason, but he doesn't seem focused most of the time. He needs to step it up or he will get cut.

Samardo held his own. he had 2 assist and 2 steal and only 2 fouls. When he first got on the court hchiacgo was amidst a 15-0 run which was mostly due to Chicago exploiting the backcourt defensively.

It would of been nice to see more rebounds but overall only AV and Gee seemed to have any consistency rebounding the ball against chicago.

Hardly an effort that would have him getting cut.

If you compared tape of him against chicago last season compared to this game you would see alot of improvement.

Might be an improvement, but still he had an opportunity and did not make his case. No doubt thats a tough situation. He was essentially a back up on a just above d-league team for most of his career, and he gets tossed into a Bulls defense intent on closing us out. But being able to respond in that situation is exactly what he needs to do to prove he is worth the wait. He went something like 16 minutes before he got his first rebound, pretty much worse that Tyler and Thompson were doing, which was not too good... Gee, whom we have all said had a crappy game, managed six rebounds.. Samardo has to do better when asked, because his role will be off the bench...

Re: Omri Casspi; a fresh start?

Casspi made a case tonight to keep him on the squad. I think Samardo is in real trouble as he really has not been able to make any real noise.

Samardo's body of work probably still puts him ahead of Jones and/or Eric.

I made a comment in the Casspi thread that i though Samardo might be in trouble because of his relatively weak preseason, and the was a comment that his body of work would keep him around over Eric and Jones. I thought further comment belonged in this thread.

I think Samardo's body of work could work for or against him. He is beginning his third year with Cleveland, his second year being a step back. While he has done a good job in the offseason losing excess weight, so far in preseason, he has not translated that into better play. i think he still makes a lot of attention span type mistakes, even though he is sprting a new jump shot and a chiseled physique. It could be he is working his ass off in practice and is just tired in games, but I would think Scott would reward him with Minutes if that were the case.

Anyway, i think he will have to show something better in the last few games. The way he is playing wont earn him significant floor time, nor any trade value. If Leuer and Zeller are playing well enough to earn the Big minutes after Andy and TT, I dont see what is to gain keeping Samardo around. gody did not do much last night either, but he has had a couple of solid perfromances in preseason, and he is being slotted as a spare three with a long ball shot. But i think they are in very similar situations, in that because other players have shown up and played better our open slots, these guys are not really helping the team so much, and its hard to see how they get much better than they are. i think it might make sense to keep players who have not had an opportunity for the practice slots, since they might still grow into useful assets . With Andy, Tristan, Leuer and Zeller you have four guys that could give you minutes at either 4 or 5, all of which have been as effective offensively as Sam Sam...

I'm relatively sure that Samardo will make the final roster (I would be VERY surprised if not)...
I just dont understand what people see in Jones or Eric... I'm ok to keep one of them but not at the expense of Samardo... cut Pargo and one of those bigs and call it a day
Samardo is a proven Nba player now, he finally is in better shape and will continue to improve...
I definitely would keep him around as a backup for TT (Let Samardo and Leuer battle it out for the backup spot)

While I don't think either Jones or Eric have done so much in the preseason to be far and away the favorite of taking over Samardo's spot on the roster, I definitely wouldn't say Samardo has proven that he's an NBA player. He really hasn't proven anything.

Samardo offers something the Cavaliers NEED which is a big who can score the ball a bit. If Leuer can offer that to a greater capacity, than perhaps "Mardo" could be in trouble. I think it'd be a mistake though as i think he has improved and is working on his game.

Will he ever be as good as i thought he could be? I suppose not unless he consistently can hit the boards. All of this being said, his minutes in preseason have been anything but consistent. Pretty hard to judge a guy based off the minutes he's gotten as of late. When he played a good block of minutes in preseason game 1 he had a decent showing. I am hopeful he makes the roster as i think it'd be stupid to have someone else (out of who is left) to make it over him. I know the Kevin Jones faction would disagree but Kevin Jones isn't a viable NBA player as of yet and despite what you think about Samuels has has played a few seasons at this level. (and had his ups and downs)

One of the key decisions for a rebuilding team is how long to stick with a project player .vs. moving on with a new project. Fortunately for Samardo, the new projects may be assigned to Canton.

I expect Leuer/Zeller/Andy/TT to consume most of the front-court minutes, leaving mop-up duty to the likes of Samardo and Harangody; but there are always injuries.
