A Nebraska school district has instructed its teachers to stop referring to students by “gendered expressions” such as “boys and girls,” and use “gender inclusive” ones such as “purple penguins” instead.

“Don’t use phrases such as ‘boys and girls,’ ‘you guys,’ ‘ladies and gentlemen,’ and similarly gendered expressions to get kids’ attention,” instructs a trainingdocument given to middle-school teachers at the Lincoln Public Schools.

“Create classroom names and then ask all of the ‘purple penguins’ to meet on the rug,” it advises.

The document also warns against asking students to “line up as boys or girls,” and suggests asking them to line up by whether they prefer “skateboards or bikes/milk or juice/dogs or cats/summer or winter/talking or listening.”

“Always ask yourself . . . ‘Will this configuration create a gendered space?’” the document says.

The instructions were part of a list called “12 steps on the way to gender inclusiveness” developed by Gender Spectrum, an organization that “provides education, training and support to help create a gender sensitive and inclusive environment for children of all ages.”

Other items on the list include asking all students about their preferred pronouns and decorating the classroom with “all genders welcome” door hangers.

If teachers still find it “necessary” to mention that genders exist at all, the document states, they must list them as “boy, girl, both or neither.”

Furthermore, it instructs teachers to interfere and interrupt if they ever hear a student talking about gender in terms of “boys and girls” so the student can learn that this is wrong.

“Point out and inquire when you hear others referencing gender in a binary manner,” it states. “Ask things like . . . ‘What makes you say that? I think of it a little differently.’ Provide counter-narratives that challenge students to think more expansively about their notions of gender.”

The teachers were also given a handout created by the Center for Gender Sanity, which explains to them that “Gender identity . . . can’t be observed or measured, only reported by the individual,” and an infographic called “The Genderbred Person,” which was produced by www.ItsPronouncedMetroSexual.com.

Despite controversy, Lincoln Superintendent Steve Joel has declared that he is “happy” and “pleased” with the training documents.

“We don’t get involved with politics,” he told KLIN Radio’s Drive Time Lincoln radio show.

“We don’t get involved with gender preferences. We’re educating all kids . . . and we can’t be judgmental,” he said.

God I have a friend of a friend who subscribes to this bullshit. Flips out if you use terms like 'her' or 'his' etc.

Youre a fucking joke. Id say mountains out of molehills but that would require giving credibility to their 'issue' rather than calling it what it is: a gigantic, disgusting cry for attention.

I have been through said training. "Purple Penguins" seems like a sarcastic take on it by one teacher, it was not included in the training. I can tell you that there are increasing non-gender specific kids in San Francisco Elementary schools... and I'm sure this just shocks all of you. The point is, if parents are choosing this way to raise their child, the schools need language to not offend these families.

Well, there's a misnamed group if I've ever heard one....
According to them, gender is based solely on what is "reported by the individual."
Fuck that. Apart from a very small number of born intersexed people, you're either a dude or a chick. If you're a dude who gets hormone treatments, gets his dick and balls cutoff, and changes his name from "Bradley" to "Chelsea", that doesn't make you a chick. It makes you a dude who got hormone treatments and his dick and balls cut off, and wants to be called Chelsea.

Or Loretta:

"All right, you little assholes, gather round."

I'd go with that.

Qtip thats the entire point. Gender neutrality and getting rid of sex/gender identity. Too progressive and its the entire country bending over for a very very small amount of people.

I live in one of the gender-bendingest cities in the United States, and I can't say it really puts me out or causes me to do anything too differently. I call kids by their actual names as often as I can. If a kid looks like a tweener, I just don't say anything about gender at all. If they need to go to the bathroom and I have the key, I unlock and ask questions later.

With my son, I told him he is a boy when he was 2. End of discussion, not a big deal.

Compare that to, say, how much I have to change what I do in a classroom for a kid with a learning disability... or one of my deaf students... or a kid in a wheelchair. Those a much more drastic changes I do every year depending upon the needs of the kids. With all of them, I make a few tweaks in what I'm doing and it becomes routine fairly quickly.

What are your personal thoughts on having to do said acts as a teacher?

Are you saying parents are raising their kids without addressing the kid's gender?

I'm unclear here...

I have no idea if the kid chose to have gender neutrality or if the parents assigned it to them. I can tell you there are more and more parents who aren't assigning gender identity to their child. That's totally a thing right now.

I'm not on board and I told my son he's a boy, just like when that "don't vaccinate your baby" thing happened a few years ago. Parents get crazy ideas, what can I say? You know what's worse? The parents who are drug addicts, abusive, gang affiliated, or in and out of jail. Those kids seem way more fucked up. But, I teach them anyway.

Parents are entitled to tell their kids whatever stupid shit they want at their own house, but they're not entitled to have the rest of the world comply with their delusions. If some guy wants to call himself a woman, he's got that right. It's when he insists that I consider him a woman -- when he gets to define reality for the rest of the world -- that I object.

Gender is a fact of nature, and schools are supposed to be teaching children about science, nature and reality. For an entire school to abandon that concept to satisfy the lunatic musing of some nutty parents is ridiculous. If you don't want your boy referred to as a boy, too fucking bad, because that's basically teaching the other children a false reality.

The midwest is going to be a bunch of "out-of-touch" mfers.. If they aren't seen that way now...

I have no idea how a kid is gender neutral nor do I see an issue with identifying basic nature... Hopefully, it just pushes people in the middle of the isle to vote Republican. Too much non-fiscally focused social fodder on the liberal side of politics these days.
