Re: Windy: Offer to Shaw or Scott could come soon

And what makes you think that? You think he takes the job without LeBron being on board yet?

Shaw has never been a head coach, and as best I know, he's never been interviewed for a head coaching job. If Shaw were to be offered the Cavs job and declines, who's to say when he might get another offer ? Everything I've read is that Byron Scott would be the Lakers next coach when Jackson retires, so Shaw would be the odd man out.

Bottom line, NBA head coaching jobs are scarce, when a nobody is offered millions to coach, nine times out of ten they will accept the offer.

Re: Windy: Offer to Shaw or Scott could come soon

Brian Shaw isn't exactly a nobody, everyone in the Lakers organization speaks highly of him - including Phil Jackson. And he also has a resume as a player.

Brian Shaw is meeting with the Cavaliers today:

Lakers assistant Brian Shaw to visit Cavaliers; Shannon Brown to opt out of contract
Shaw was scheduled to have discussions with Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and General Manager Chris Grant about the head coaching position. Brown is expected to become a free agent.

The seemingly forever revolving world of the Lakers just keeps spinning. The latest news for a franchise that just won its 16th NBA championship is that assistant coach Brian Shaw will visit the Cleveland Cavaliers about the head coaching position vacancy and that guard Shannon Brown will opt out of his contract.

Shaw left Los Angeles on Monday morning for a flight to Cleveland to meet with Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and General Manager Chris Grant, said two sources with knowledge of the situation, who were not authorized to speak.

Shaw was scheduled to have face-to-face discussions with Gilbert and Grant on Monday night and Tuesday about replacing Mike Brown as coach of the Cavaliers, the two sources said.

Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak said last Thursday that he did "grant permission" for Cleveland to speak with Shaw, who had a telephone interview with Cavaliers representatives last week.

Shaw, 43, a Lakers assistant coach the last five seasons, probably also would be a candidate to replace Lakers Coach Phil Jackson if he retires.

But right now, Shaw has his eyes set on trying to become coach of the Cavaliers, both sources said.

It has been reported that LeBron James has a strong interest in the triangle offense, something in which Shaw is well-versed because of his four years as a player who won three titles with the Lakers from 2000-2002. James is expected to become a free agent July 1, and there is no guarantee he'll return to the Cavaliers next season, even if Shaw lands the job.

As for Brown, the 6-4 reserve guard will opt out of the final year of his two-year, $4.139-million contract by the June 30 deadline, his agent, Mark Bartelstein, said Sunday.

"My guess is he's probably going to become a free agent," Bartelstein said.

Brown signed the two-year, "biannual exception" last year with the Lakers. He made $1.990 million last season and was due to make $2.149 million next season.

The Lakers own his "early bird" rights and could sign him for up to five years and as high as the mid-level exception; the current mid-level exception pays $5.8 million in the first year.

I have a feeling we may see Shaw receive an offer before the end of the day Tuesday, with a presser either Tuesday or Wednesday. Then comes the full court press on LeBron James.

I hope you are right Sailfish...

Brian Shaw has that it factor IMO. What I mean by that is that most former players (especially PG's) get the X's and O's part of coaching. It's the dealing with personalities that often separate the good coaches from the great coaches. Being that Shaw looks to have already been given that responsibility and even was one of the leading strategists for a championship team...it gives me a good vibe about him.

What makes Phil so great is that often he knows the right buttons to push for players on a personal level. Whether it be calling out Gasol for not being physical, subtley saying Kobe's shooting too much, working the refs through the media, not getting on Artest for making a bonehead mistake etc.... Phil usually knows what his teams need.

After reading the story of Shaw before game 6 of the finals vs Orlando. When he was supposed to present his strategy, he went over player by player what they needed to do and what they meant to the team. That showed that intangible gift great coaches have in relating to his players. That's the "it" factor I'm talking about.

Yes I only know of two of these incidents with Shaw but it shows that very important non X's and O's factor a great coach needs. I'm all in with Shaw.

Is it a gamble??? Yes, but hell this whole off-season is gamble. We have to build a team with a lot of unknowns anyway.

He has been interviewed for head coaching jobs and has been highly regarded as one of the up-and-coming coaches, but folks have assumed that he was being groomed to take over for Phil (he and Rambis were part of that discussion but once Rambis left, it was left to Shaw).

Obviously, Shaw is interested enough in our gig to come to Cleveland. He doesn't have the leverage (or history w/ MSU) Izzo has so it seems he's intent on our hc vacancy. I'm guessing Scott is ambivalent and it's possible Gilbert is ambivalent about him as well. If Gilbert/Grant get a good feel from Shaw today/tomorrow, I'm guessing he becomes our new head coach on Wednesday, just in time...

Outstanding post.....100% agree. I like Shaw and would like to see him get the gig!

Naw. I believe Scott thinks LeBron is staying and I also believe Scott wants the job. If Jackson gets the okay to proceed from his Docs, Jackson will remain coach of LA. I also think the Cavs will interview Shaw again but will then offer the job to Scott THIS WEEK. Scott will accept. Gilbert is going to be the aggressor with this even he does not know "for sure" that LeBron is staying... I think he does know though... Scott will be our coach this week. If Doc Rivers retires, Shaw just might be the next coach of Boston.

This Chicago stuff is funny to me as well. This Tom Thieb guy who was the assistant at Boston did not seem to be the choice of the Celtics to take over if Rivers retired anyway. Why is that? World Wide Wes and Thieb were connected and Thieb is now the coach of the Bulls. Does anyone believe LeBron is all smiles just because Thieb is coaching the Bulls? Hell no. In fact; I'd say that's a big o'l minus to LeBron.

All signs for me point to Scott being offered and then he accepts as coach of the Cavaliers. LeBron stays.

Re: Windy: Offer to Shaw or Scott could come soon

Would Shaw bring in the triangle?

Re: Windy: Offer to Shaw or Scott could come soon

Yes, he would. Which makes him appealing.....at least to me.

Yes, the guy is appealing but would a good team of NBA players truly respect him never having been a head coach? Or would he be another Brown kind of thing? Do the Cavs really want yet another coach who has never coached before?

Doug, very valid point. My guess is, and I don't know for sure because I have never played in the NBA, that players would look at him different than some random assitant coach like a Mike Brown. He played in the NBA....won rings in the NBA. I think that alone gives him a leg up on just some random NBA assitant.

They would not respect Scott, so I don't see a reason for this to be a part of the debate between Scott and Shaw.

The simple fact is that whoever the Cavaliers hire is going to need to prove himself. We are not going to be hiring a guy who when he steps into the locker room, everyone immediately respects him.

I'm not worried about that at all with Shaw... I think his close ties with Shaq would carry a lot of weight with the current Cavs roster, regardless of whether Shaq remains a Cavalier.

Personally, I'd prefer Scott because he has won multiple championships as a player and has taken a team to the Finals already as the head guy... not to mention what I'm sure are positive things relayed to LeBron via CP3 about him already. But if we end up with Shaw I'd be equally happy. A few years under the Zen master, along with multiple championship runs, and experience dealing with an ego like Kobe's can't be overlooked. Let's just hope this gets resolved soon so we can move on to the next order of business.

My gut says that Phil will drag this out for a while and Shaw will drag his feet, meaning Scott will be the guy.
