Seattle Seahawks @ Cleveland Browns (1:00PM - CBS)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don't know why they don't have an OC this year. Kind of looks like an amateur move, and Heckert and Holmgren make a good number of mistakes no matter what some of you think.

Three to Focus on – Seahawks @ Browns, Week 7
October 21st, 2011 | Author: Steve Palazzolo

On paper, both the Seattle Seahawks and Cleveland Browns look quite similar. Both teams come into the game at 2-3, they both sit in the bottom 10 of our rankings offensively, yet both of them are boasting top 10 defenses. The Seahawks have scored 94 points and given up 122, while the Browns have scored 91 and have only given up 117.

The Seahawks are coming off their bye week after a shocking fourth quarter comeback to defeat the New York Giants two weeks ago, and while the circumstances surrounding the comeback were impressive (Brandon Browner’s 94 yard touchdown sealed the deal), perhaps most shocking part of it was that the Seahawks were able to win a game in the Eastern time zone after historically putrid play while on that side of the country. The Browns are hoping the Seahawks will sleepwalk through another cross country trip.

.

1) Colt McCoy vs. Seahawks’ QB

Since neither team runs the ball particularly well, this game will come down to the signal callers. Browns quarterback Colt McCoy is being relied on heavily, especially for a team that was expected to feature a power running game. McCoy is averaging an astounding 43 attempts/game through five games and he is certainly trying to shed the “game manager” label he has garnered since being drafted. The problem with all those throws is that he’s averaging only 5.5 yards/attempt, worst in the league, and he sits at 27th in our PFF QB Rating with 76.46. His -5.0 PFF grade under pressure has been well documented and McCoy may not be ready to carry an offense at this point.

Meanwhile, Tarvaris Jackson may be a game time decision with a right pectoral sprain, and if he cannot go then Charlie Whitehurst will get the call. Similar to the Browns’ situation, whoever is under center needs to make plays to give the Seahawks a chance to win. Jackson followed up a career game against the Falcons (+6.1) with a less than stellar showing against the Giants before getting hurt. Whitehurst (+3.1) proved that he is ready to play by stepping in and leading the comeback. No matter the quarterback, wide receiver Doug Baldwin is emerging as a key target out of the slot while averaging an impressive 2.72 yards per route run.

.

2) Browns Running Game vs. Seahawks Run Defense

The Seahawks come into the game with our highest rated run defense, and they are led by our top rated run stopping defensive tackle, Alan Branch (+9.6 Run Def). While he has been bullying guards all season, Branch has had help as every defensive lineman on the roster is grading positively against the run. Seattle is strong at every level, as their linebackers have been solid and strong safety Kam Chancellor brings linebacker size to Seattle’s secondary. Chancellor is our second highest run stopping safety at +4.7 Run Def and he excels at attacking the line of scrimmage.

For the Browns, running back Peyton Hillis has battled injuries all season and he may not be available on Sunday. If Hillis is unavailable, Montario Hardesty, who has seen his workload increase over the past few weeks, will get the start once again. Rookie left guard Jason Pinkston (-5.2 Run Block) has had a tough transition to the position after moving from left tackle in college. His battle with Branch will go a long way in determining if the Browns are able to put together a ground game this week.

.

3) Rookie Battle: LE Jabaal Sheard vs. RT James Carpenter

Two highly drafted rookies have had much different results in terms of their NFL debuts. Jabaal Sheard (+11.3) is currently No. 3 in our Rookie of the Year race, mostly on the strength of his pass rushing abilities. He has 12 pressures, two quarterback hits and two sacks on the season and has proven to be a three-down left defensive end. James Carpenter (-8.0), much like the entire Seahawks offensive line, has struggled mightily in pass protection. He has surrendered 11 pressures, nine quarterback hits, and three sacks. The Giants game was particularly difficult for him as Jason-Pierre Paul was too quick off the edge for Carpenter, and the moment he overcompensated, Pierre-Paul beat him to the inside. After watching Sheard explode past right tackle Khalif Barneslast week for a strip sack, Carpenter will certainly have another tough challenge this week.

Crucial game in the Suck for Luck campaign. The Browns suffered two devastating wins over Miami and Indianapolis. Two games in which they must atone for this Sunday with an excruciatingly lopsided loss.

Expectations are low in Cleveland with Pat Shurmur dialing up a surefire game plan to guarantee his team the loss by inexplicably holding out playmakers Evan Moore, and Peyton Hillis in past weeks.

Expect a heavy dose of short predictable passes to below average receivers excluding Greg Little who was so clearly better than Brian Robiskie it was beginning to become too obvious what Shurmur was doing. Little got the nod and looked solid much to the dismay of the coaching staff. Shurmur had something to add on the subject.

"With Greg he's young, and we're trying to put a system in place. We appreciate the enthusiasm but it's really not necessary to go throwing stiff arms and breaking tackles after the catch. The route on 3rd down was designed to fall short of the 1st down by about 5 yards. He broke it for about 15, it's moments like that where he really shows his youth and inexperience."

This Sunday is really shaping up to be a stinker. Pete Carroll has hit a rough stretch winning 2 of their last 3 games. He realized this and posted a tweet of LeBron James' potential Seahawks jersey that created quite a stir and took some of the 'heat' off. An unnamed source has reported Carroll has some events planned with the Westboro Baptist Church that should get quite a bit of publicity and draw some away from the Seahawks should they falter to victory.

What the fuck is this? :chuckles:

The above article just proves once again that Tom Heckert is in the zone in terms of drafting. Dude has to be a top 5 talent evaluator in the FL. Thank God for him and Holmgren.

If we lose this game, we're officially in the suck for Luck sakes.

The thing is, we're not trying to suck. We just do. :)

like i've said before our 2 wins already put us out of the suck for luck sweepstakes...if you thought miami and indianapolis tank now wait till week 14/15/16 when they're still gonna be winless but sit some of their starters due to "injuries"

Completely agree. There is going to be a 0 or 1 win team at the end of the season.

There may be a 1 win team, but I doubt a team will be winless. It's almost as hard to go winless in this league as it is to go undefeated.

The Colts do get to play the Jags twice, and that team is so sorry as well. Colts have came close, they'll end up with a win or two at the end of the year. There's an outside chance,(I know very low) that Peyton could come back. He still insists he might be able to.

Miami, I think is the team most likely to not win at all. Look at their division, and the other teams they still have to play. They look really bad.

I do agree, we can lose out (which we probably won't) and our chances are still very low. There are some other good QB prospects to look at though, besides Luck.

But if we do lose Sunday, we have an outside chance at Luck. The Rams, Cards, and Jags to me are the only winnable games left for us. Those games could go either way for a team like us. You'd think we could win a few, or at least one, but who knows.

I'm not even going to include the Bungles at this point, they look a lot better than us. Every other team left is likely going to be in the playoffs.
