Shurmur and Heckert fired (ESPN)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Schefter's article stating the Browns were looking for a fresh, offensive mind was encouraging to me... That and the fact he mentioned McDaniels is not line for the position here..

For me, I'm all on the Chip Kelly bandwagon... Is it just me or does anyone else see a little bit of Jimmy Johnson in him? Not saying he'll be a 3-time Super Bowl winner but they seem to have similar attitudes and philosophies..

GM wise, the discouraging thing is that the position is not going to attract as much interest because it's more or so going to be a glorified personnel director role... Very similar to what happened with Heckert in Philly..

MKC listed a good group of guys, there isn't a guy in there that particularly screams "NO!" other than Lombardi..

I'd prefer not Idzik from Seattle, mainly because he's a cap guy, not a personnel guy... The Browns have the cap guy in Banner, what they really need is a good eye for talent..

Whaley is an interesting name...He's a Pittsburgh guy through and through and someone Haslam is familiar with from his PIT days... Although the whole porno video e-mail incident he was involved in PIT is kinda bizarre...

Farmer is a guy who has seen his name thrown around quite a bit for GM jobs... Banner is familiar with him when he was drafted by Philly during Banner's early years in Philly..

I do like Caldwell a good amount... Interesting thing is he was college roomates with Niners OC Greg Roman at JCU..

Keim and Licht would both be good choices, they're very respected candidates... I like Licht the best out of all the candidates but he's in play for other jobs as well and will be highly sought after... Interestingly enough, he's a guy who brought Bill O'Brien into the NFL...

I'd honestly be alright with any of these, more or less because they're not Lombardi...

I am going to assume that the two of them were brought together or had a deal in place prior to the purchase of the browns. There is a really good chance that Haslam has been looking at purchasing a team for some time and there has been an agreement between the two. Now im not saying i heard this somewhere just speculation. All I know is I am glad Shurmur is gone and other than that I am very apprehensive for the rest of the changes that may take place.

I said it earlier, but I'd be fully on board with a Doug Whaley, Chip Kelly combination.

@MaryKayCabot

#browns Dqwell Jackson said Shurmur seemed like he was holding back tears postgame. "we'd run thru wall for him"

.

@ScottPetrak

#Browns LT Thomas on possibility of GM Tom Heckert being fired: It's definitely not because of what he did. It's because we changed owners

.

That post game interview was pretty depressing. Shurmur is a nice guy. Just not head coach material.

I agree. As Shurmur walked off the field after the game, you could see that he was holding back tears. I'm sure this was a life-long dream, and he knew it was over. From all accounts he is a very nice man. I feel we need to move on from him, but you can't help but feel bad for him on a personal level.

Say what you will about his gameplan and use of timeouts, but the marked improvement of young offensive players in undeniable.

I do wonder what he could have done with a capable quarterback.

Agree. It's way too late now but I wonder if things would be different had we secured a trade for RGIII.

Dolphins or Cowboys Jimmy ? Cause Barry Switzer could have coached that Cowboys team to a championship....

In all seriousness I wouldn't mind a talented offensive mind at the helm... But that being said, I want the defense built up to an elite level...

I liked Heckert AND Shurmur, sad to see them go.

Part of the reason RG3 has been so good this year was the fact that he had Mike Shanahan putting him in great position to succeed. Do you honestly think Shurmur would have done as well?

I still don't think the Browns, with so many holes, were in a position where they should have been selling the farm for RG3. Especially a for a QB whose style could lead to injuries (which we've already seen).

This was the same Mike Shanahan that was nearly run out of town the year before because of the same reasons Shurmur is now.

Shanny got lucky and got the once in a generation talent, and if you think this offense would look exactly the same with RG3 as it does with Weeden, I'd say you're crazy.

b00bie never met a front office combo he did not like.

And I'm not so sure about all the young player progress. Browns got blasted at the end of the season.

I'll give Haslam the benefit of the doubt until we see who the new GM and coach are. If you are Haslam, and beginning your ownership process with the Browns, really your first question in regards to the GM is why he would spend a first round pick on a 29 year old QB with as much development the team needed. I'm not sure we will ever really get the full story on that pick, but if Heckert was "on-board" with that decision, it has to be an immediate red flag to the new ownership regardless of the other draft history.

The Weeden pick was really that horrible.

IMO, depending on the story Halsam got, the decision may have been made immediately.
