SOPA and Protect IP

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Hilarious how this thread got turned into a tutorial on efficient piracy... lol.

Any good free (not free trials where you have to give billing information) usenet servers. I am 100% new to this and trying to figure it out. Downloaded a GrabIt client but I'm pretty lost.

I use to be ahead of the curve on this shit.

Slow as shit, and retention is absurdly small. But it'll give you some idea of what usenet is like; minus the speed. If you're curious as to why I use usenet, it's because I have two wideband modems. One legit, one cloned. Both running at 50mbit/s downstream. Unfortunately I've recently moved (split up with my chick) so my shit isn't set up but by Friday I'll be pulling in nearly 100mbit/sec (aggregate over two IPs).. Assuming I can get both modems to go online in my area (!).

Long story short, usenet will max out your connection. If you've got 15 down, you'll pull about 1.75mbytes per second from usenet, and unlike a torrent there is no need for "seeders." You download direct from the servers.

Very helpful...just looking for a safer alternative to torrents. I'll give it the old college try.

So I've been checking out nzbmatrix and its kind of shitty without a VIP membership, do you think its worth the money to get it or should I just stick to binsearch?

It cost me $7 two years ago.. The cost of a double-quarter pounder w/cheese, add leaf lettuce and tomato, a large fries, and a drink.. It's a one-time fee.. I use the site several times a week.

You know, speaking of SOPA/PIPA.

An interesting claim they always say, that it costs 750,000 jobs, and $250 billion.

750,000 jobs is roughly DOUBLE all the jobs in the entire motion picture industry.

I love freakonomics.

Yeah, it's hilarious.. But as a programmer, I do see the negative effects of piracy. It does force products to be sold competitively and has pushed me completely out of developing PC applications but more towards development libraries, middle-ware, and custom applications that won't ever leave the client's network. Had this been 10 years ago, maybe even 15, and I'd be writing application suites for the PC.

Am I bitter about that? Of course not. It's progress!! People are getting smarter. Programmers and companies need to be more innovative and get out of the "retail box" mentality just like you said in an earlier post. And let's not forget, for every commercial application that's released (including Mac OS X, those bastards) there are at least 4 open-source and open-license libraries that went towards it's development. Look at Mac OS X and iOS in general. The entire system is based on the Mach kernel, an open-source project that was the foundation of NeXTSTEP the precursor to Mac OS X.

So to me, as a developer, it is progress...

giganews.com is doing free trials.. its expensive though. astraweb is supposed to be good.

i somehow fucked up my config of sabnzbd, it never downloads shit. actually none of the things i downloaded are useful at all except for Mimo which comes with giganews.

new problems; plex is not recognizing a damn thing ive given it anymore. thats 20g of porn, seemingly gone as of right now.. ill keep working on it.

the other thing is that I cant connect my laptop to my tv anymore.. moved today and when i set everything up at the new place, neither of my laptops worked. display, settings etc. changed to 'extend my monitor' but when I hit apply, it automatically unchecks the box. Ive reset both computers and tried several times. just audio, no video. input 1, input 2. ill keep working.

how the fuck are you getting 100mb/sec? because each minifile is being downloaded at 1.7? a bit advanced for me..

Here's a trick with astraweb.. Go get a greendot card $20 bucks. Buy astraweb with the card. Never replenish the card. Astraweb doesn't deactivate your account for 6 months. Been doing that shit for years... still have 2 astraweb accounts, lol..

Screenshot your config page and post it.. I'll walk you through it. If it's too fucked, just Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs... and uninstall it. Then reinstall with default settings. Pop in your server settings and you're off..

Never used Plex so I can't speculate. I would imagine it's because your media isn't being shared from the right folders but I have no idea..

If using Windows 7, from the "Screen Resolution" panel found from the desktop context menu: select your TV as the primary display in "Display," and select the option "Show Desktop only on 2" for "Multiple displays." Ensure that the resolution that is set is an HDTV (LCD) compliant resolution, ie 1360x768 or 1920x1080, and hit apply. If it doesn't work, just wait and Windows will restore previous settings. At that point, change to "Show Desktop only on 1" and try again. Post screenshots if problem persists.

100mbits/sec, not 100mbytes/sec.. 100mbits would come to roughly 12.5 megabytes per second, but that's the theoretical maximum without TCP overhead. I'd more likely be looking at 10 after factoring the loss from line aggregation. And this isn't in practice yet, I get my shit fully setup this Friday. I'm using one 50mbit subscribed DOCSIS 3.0 modem, and one cloned from valid certs on another node from Kapolei, about 25 miles from my present location in Waikiki. So both modems should sync and go online once the cable guy leaves.. lol..

It's not over yet. The scum will never stop. Now they want an international body to govern our internet. If they pass ACTA, we will just have an unelected body pass things like SOPA and PIPA for us.

Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty—power is ever stealing from the many to the few…. The hand entrusted with power becomes … the necessary enemy of the people. Only by continual oversight can the democrat in office be prevented from hardening into a despot: only by unintermitted Agitation can a people be kept sufficiently awake to principle not to let liberty be smothered in material prosperity.

Disclaimer: I am opposed to SOPA.

Question - We have rules and laws in place in the real world when it comes to stealing, reselling or damaging other people's property. Should we not have any rules in place in the cyberworld? Or is it anything goes? If I can't protect my products, am i fair game and my products can be stolen without repercussions? It's going to happen, we can't stop it, so dont make any rules to stop it??? That seems to be what some here are saying. I'm not sure where I stand on how to police the internet. Just trying to get a feel for what some of you are saying.

Is the "scum" the piraters that are stealing and selling other people's products, intellectual property, etc and selling it for profit? Or are the piraters the good guys?

We have laws regarding copyrighted content on the internet. We have courts that prosecute theft and fraud. What we don't need is legislation giving the federal government the authority to shut down websites without due process of law or laws that subject our internet to an unelected international authority that doesn't have to adhere to the Constitution.
