sorting out the defense?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
You might come to this conclusion if you haven't watched him play the past two years, but LeBron is by no means the best defender in the NBA right now. He barely played defense at all last year.

I don't know what it is. It just seems like lately he has been getting fatigued easier and is trying to save energy for the offensive side of the ball by being less aggressive on defense.

I have to agree with Jack here. I don't know what happened, but the Heat had great defense the year before last, but last year they almost fell off a cliff. Lebron himself has def looked more fatigued. I am actually worried about all the miles on him. It would be nice to get some specialist defenders in here. Honestly with the way James Jones and Miller are looking, I would prefer some guys known for defense over them.

My other big worry is that the defensive schemes that Blatt knows best don't work in the NBA sort of similar to how Pitino was such a fan of the full court press, which is hard to use consistently against NBA ballhandlers.

At the moment, there are 3 players on this team capable of above-average defense individually and team-wise (based on year's past). On another note, they all are currently in the starting lineup. That would be Shawn Marion, Anderson Varejao, and LeBron.

Love, Dion, and Kyrie have a reputation of lack-luster defense, but having almost a half-dozen different types of coaches makes the message inconsistent. The only possible information we have on them when they were winning at the appropriate level would be the 2012 Olympics and 2014 World Cup (which lack advanced stats).

Tristan Thompson has shown a high-level of learning and improvement, but he still needs coaching in the team concept to reach the full potential (which may be very soon).

Mike Miller and Matthew Dellavedova can make an impact, but will be limited physically due to being too old to move (Mike) or not being gifted with athleticism (Delly). Once the younger and more talented adapt to what Blatt is asking for on that end, these guys will be that more effective since their b-ball IQ was high to begin with.

The reason why we've won half our games is naturally due to the offense, but 3 guys who help the D are playing 1/3 of the total minutes in the team's games. Getting key stops has helped, but once we were in the lead for good, we didn't keep shutting them down, only keeping the difference that we already had.

We aren't playing idiots in the games, and only 6 games is hard to show that difference. Meanwhile, Blatt has gotten key defensive stops, which means he will have an effective way to do it regularly.

109 defensive rating isn't good, but that's were our guys are at. And LeBron isn't exactly lighting the world on fire for the first 12-24 minutes of the game. They'll improve as they go along. Not every team looks like the Celtics in 2007-08.

I'll be ready to revisit this after the first month and a half.

I don't believe we have the personnel to be a top 10 defensive team in the league, even with better chemistry. Same thing in 2010, Mike Brown focused/preached it/talked about it in every interview but it never worked in the end. You can try and emphasize defense until your blue in the face but it wont work without the right pieces

a rim protector would do wonders...also I think we are doubling the post to much.. Love and TT are pretty good at holding their position.. I think teams pass out of the double and we are late to rotate.. we will play like a Western Conference team for most of the year...outscoring teams.. hopefully the D tightens up

Rim protector would be very nice but our guards are getting butt hurt on the defensive end and so is TT

This team needs a lock-down wing defender. hmmmm

The thing that really helps this team is the rebounding. They're already a monster on the glass, and they'll only get better. We all know teams will get open looks against this team, but they'd better make the most of em, cuz they're not getting a 2nd possession. Plus they might be giving up an easy one on the other end with our ridiculous transition game. This team is explosive enough that they dont have to get stop after stop to win games.

Sadly, statistically we are a below average rebounding team. We have a negative rebounding differential for the season so far and rebound less than half of our opportunities in total. We should be doing much better given our personnel.

I agree, Griffen could have played that deal better he got out played and antsy.

Yeah man.....got played by acquiring one of the 10 best players in the league for a guy with an 8 PER and another guy logging 11 minutes a game for a (2-5) team. Someone fire up the trade machine and see what else he should have got in that insanely lopsided trade. Flip Saunders first born?

We go through stretches where we absolutely lock down the other team. Once we iron out the wrinkles and start to hit our playoff stride, we are going to be PLENTY good enough on D.

You act as tho his 8.3 per 7 games in to his career is a bad thing AND his running mate is friggen Mo Williams Lol. Hell, I'll take 8.3 per from a 19 yr old over the garbage we are currently getting from SG position. BTW Mr. 11 mpg has a per of 18.6. ANd if you really want to break down 2-5 v our 3-3 team. The only X factor we have going is that we drop 3 more FT 's in the hoop per game .

Yeah...

I like Wiggins and Bennett, and I think they'll be a solid duo over the next few years, but if you've watched a Minnesota game and thought for a minute that either of those guys could positively contribute in a meaningful way this season, you're delusional. They are both 2-3 years away from being better than a typical replacement player. And yes, that is taking into account that Bennett has performed well in limited minutes. I would point out, that on a team bereft of talent, he can't get more than 11 minutes a game atm. There's a reason for that. He's shown big improvement from last year, and if he keeps it up he may eventually be a + player, but he's not there yet.

Meanwhile, Love can be a key piece on a championship team right now. I'm pretty sure in 10 years people will look back on this trade and think that both teams benefited greatly from it.

Not really looking to dissect your post But Wiggins would double anything Waiters gives us THIS YEAR. I'd like to go on more about this but I think we are steering this thread in the wrong direction. Not sure, gotta walk on eggs shells around here

Really? Cause Dion has played like dog shit and he has comparable numbers to Wiggins....so are you inferring Wiggins isn't any good either?

The guy has a ton of potential but if you honestly think this team would be better off without a 26 year old PF who's averaging 19 and 10 and not even playing at his ceiling, then you should honestly just stop watching basketball.

Do I think Wiggins will be a good NBA player? Sure. Do I think he'll ever be a top 10 player? I think it's pretty doubtful. And how long would that take? 3-4 years? Once LeBron has exited his prime?

Maybe you could make the argument that Wiggins would make our team defense a bit better but our offense would be drastically worse taking away the only guy on the team making outside shots consistently. Floor spacing with Wiggins would not be good at this stage in his career, which would clog the lane for LBJ and Kyrie and really bog down the offense.
