Re: Come back Wally

^^^ Those stats are cool and all but Im tired of people giving LeBron credit for playing the PF position because he doesnt. When we go small Wally is always guarding the PF on the opposite team, not LeBron.

Yep, and perhaps that has something to do with why the other units with just one big aren't doing so well.

Anyway, I've pointed out Wally's on-court numbers numerous times before, but I believe there's been a drop off in December when Wally's shot flew south for the winter. It's hard to get a handle on that since 82games doesn't have monthly splits (at least that I've discovered).

My feeling is that if he actually does play like a PF, like if he's actually gonna post-up for instance, we are potentially very dangerous. This obviously doesnt happen all the time, he's all over the court, we all know point guard lebron, a little too well sometimes... but these stats are what they are. when lebron is listed as a PF, we do very well. i found it interesting

Re: Come back Wally

When Wally was in College he was mostly a "Back to the basket" player.

Re: Come back Wally

Wally, even when he isn't making his 3's, offers a lot to this team. He stretches the floor, even when he's cold. An opposing team HAS to respect his career shooting percentages. He offers size that none of our other marksmen do, and with that size he tends to draw opposing bigs away from the basket which clears lanes for the rest of the Cavs. He has a post up game that none of our other shooters have.

On Defense, he's slow and has terrible lateral quickness, but he tries. And often times he makes good defensive plays, as long as he isn't on the perimeter.

Oh, and he can deflect ninja stars with his face when he switches from Blue Steel to Magnum. :king:

Re: Come back Wally

I think this is why most of us want sally to request a buyout and come back. Even if you hate him and his missed 3s you really cannot deny the strength of his unit( the group on the floor!!). He has obviously been taking a lot of abuse as a big, and I think it has had something to do with his rapidly diminishing production.

We have seen that having Wally out hurts us even if he isn't scoring. This is confusing but I really think it has to do with his increased rebounding and offensive threat.

If we trade him it would be nice to get a sf/sg with size and a shot. There sadly aren't a lot of available guys that can fill that need. I am leaning toward G Wallace, but getting him means adjusting our gameplan on the lbj at pf unit. Unless we know for sure Wally is coming back. If that happens tho we have a problem with minutes for our players...

Re: Come back Wally

Ha! Well if it wasn't my nickname for him before it is now.

People have talked about how bad Sallys post up was, but I think it is pretty good and his 12-18 foot jumpers for at least the first month. Most of those double digit game came from his midrange game I think. He is not without his value, but he is essentially as diminished as what we originally expected from Big Ben

If we truly wanted to replace Wally with someone who could do what we offered we would have to get Sheed.

Re: Come back Wally

Was waiting for this thread. This team was playing very ordinary for the past couple of weeks (yes Wally played a major part of that suckiness). It was always going to catch up with us. Playing a solid team on their floor when they are in good form, our continued struggles and all the stars alligned for a loss. Wally was not a factor in this.

Lets not kid oursleves here.

Re: Come back Wally

This thread reminds me of that we need Larry thread that Cavsrules created last year when Larry, Lebron, and half the rest of the team was hurt. :chuckles:

Re: Come back Wally

I'm not sure why people are always down on Wally, is it that he makes 13mill, if so the FO knew that going in and did not have a problem. I think we need to look at Wally for what he is. An ageing vet that does what he can to make the team better. I have not heard any of the coaches have a problem with him. He does what he is asked; he is a big slow SG that is being asked to play PF not SF or SG. Do you think JJ is ready, well after watching last nights game I don't think so, next year I think we will start to see that big PF we are looking for.
Sure I would love for us to get a Joe Smith type of player for Wally but not if we have to trade JJ or a 1st round pick or pick up a bad contract like NY does.

Re: Come back Wally

To be fair to Wally, he is playing out of his comfort zone and has been with the Cavs the whole time. He does what he is asked and makes no complaints even though playing low has put his body in more danger at the end of his career. You can't question his dedication, just his production. I don't think he is clutch tho, and depending on him really has me worried.

Re: Come back Wally

Does giving it "one's all" include jacking up bad shots right and left: got to show you mean something to team I guess? If Wally would hustle less but take less bad shots and thus hopefully make more of the ones he actually takes I'd be far happier with his performance. Hustle only gets you so far: just look at how ineffective Ben Wallace becomes when teams run a zone and he's got a motor twice as big as Wally.

On the other hand you guys have like Prince and Joe Johnson who show very little emotion and are extremely good players. Player's should be judge on how productive they are and not on how good they look doing it.
