The Bench

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I find it funny this organization has the nerve to even mention the bench bad play when it went out and signed ONE damn player. We lost Parker and Jamison and we went out and signed CJ Miles. I mean c'mon, there's no way we thought our draft picks would equal Parker and Jamison's production. Obvious tank move. That's why I'm not even mad. I mean EVENTUALLY we have to sign NBA players. When we do that ill be here cheering.

The organizations thought process needs to be questioned.

It's year 3 for Samuels, year 4 for Casspi and year 3 for Harangody (have they said why they made a QO to a guy they wont even make active?). All the Cavaliers did was pump up Samuels' weight loss and Casspi's summer. They talked up Sloan and kept the salary dump in Pargo. They spent a month wooing CJ Miles (what did happen with Shved?) and their so called developmental center project is a 24 year old who did nothing in college, nothing in summer league and nothing in training camp.

These are the players they felt comfortable and their evaluations have been a disaster.

until you have harangody, casspi and Samuels getting 15 minutes a game theres not really any consistency in playing together that will give them any consistency on the court.

Scott is still in preseason mode with the bench.

zellers return most lkely will allow the cavs to start establishing some sort of cohesive unit on the bench.

Was going to post that I'm all for a Delonte West return. But I'll submit Lucious Harris. Signed as a FA after being waived by Nets and averaged 4.3 pts on 40% shooting. Sadly I could call him a current upgrade.

No way the Cavs bring Delonte back. I loved him when he played here, but you don't bring a bipolar guy with a history of chemistry issues into a locker room filled with rookies and sophomores.

Mentioned this in the Chris Grant thread. But honestly what we have going on here is genius. The starters start the game with a clean slate (dur), 0-0, and have to play tough to get a lead. When the bench comes in, its pretty much guaranteed that they lose that lead. Meaning our starters have to play at 120% to get the lead back. Gives them experience playing more important minutes. And ensures a better draft pick while still developing (starter) talent. Genius I tell ya.

Starting for who? Starting for the Cavs - sure - but that's because our goal is to rebuild from the draft.

But maybe I misunderstood what you meant by average or 1/2 average. If you just meant not D league scraps ... sure, carry on. If you meant average for a bench player, you're probably short selling Jamison/Parker and yes, giving some of the younger players too much credit.

When I didn't underline some of those guys, especially the rookies, that meant they don't look like crap out there, they're at least average or better. That's not giving them credit, they themselves proved in short time they have a place in the league. Clearly you don't think they're not at least average at this point?

Parker was on his last legs, so he looked somewhat slow and prodding out there, aka "Weak Sauce". It still wasn't weak enough that he could contribute to the team and perform his role somewhat. All of the guys on the list without an underline are at least average players, but ones with half an underline are somewhat below average but not absolutely horrible. For instance, Jamison could stretch the defense, but chucked too many shots and had horrible defense. So he was average offensively but not good defensively.

Our starters have out performed the bench by a longshot, if you've followed the stats above (they're small, but you could probably find them anywhere for comparison. And 3 of our top 5 picks are a reason for that. Tyler missed a few games at this point but he's usually the first guy subbed in, so it doesn't matter much. All of those guys aren't horrible in any way because they do it within their boundaries. Thompson is active on defense, and despite his short comings, he is drawing fouls and makes it difficult to leave alone. Zeller was finally showing good promise, and before that was pretty active himself, much better than Samardo or Leuer. Waiters, went out and had streaky moments so far that you normally don't see, but his defense isn't bad either.

So yes, we're upgrading the hell out of the team by getting more picks of players who don't look like crap, but we're still not completely there.

If Andy's still around, we may only need another big that's not D-League material. Or a swingman. Or a backup guard. Or all three.

But would consistency and familiarity with each other suddenly turn Samuels, Casspi, and especially Harangody into viable NBA players?

15 minutes of them on the court at the same time would be nice for when I need to take a long shit during a game but don't feel like pausing it. At this point, however, that really can be said for the entire time the "second unit" is in anyways. It may be the ugliest basketball I've ever seen played.

I'm pretty sure the big LH being best friend's with Kyrie has something to do with this. You're going to have some pretty bad players at the end of the bench and you might as well get something out of them

If they fall more than 12 games out of a playoff spot...

It may not be long, even though they're 1 game out today. :chuckles:

You also said I could make one after All-star break as well a while back when we tried to create another one, so I'll make one according to whichever comes first. :chuckles:

We lose a starter or starters for an extended period of time, sayonara season. Way too large of a quality gap between our starting unit and our bench. The level of play between each is huge. Really thin ice. Looks like we will have a season like last where we have D-League talent starting at some point.

I understand the reasons and will remain patient. But this bench is pitiful. Seeing other teams units destroy them up and down the floor is comical. We literally look like 5th graders, fumbling the ball around.

Happy to see Byron tinkered with rotations last night. Need to have either Kyrie or Dion on the floor at all times. Down low, with Zeller out, we are at a loss with Andy on the bench. It is a sad state of affairs with no AV or TZ.

Well even though they didn't want to add any talent via FA,Grant has to do a better job of assembling a bench.
Tank mode or not it's time to him to upgrade that back end and make it competitive.

I will not say I get or even go along with what Grant has done assembling a bench. He can do better than this mess.
Scott is wanting someone to step up and up their game, but none of them have the talent to up anything.

When U don't have a bench, you can't rest your starters and that makes them more prone to injury and fatigue.
We just saw what happened with AV and Z out.

I really think its a non-issue right now. Grant has taken a flier on some stop-gaps like Casspi, Miles, but he hasn't gone out and made any serious acquisitions. I like the approach he's been taking. We aren't going to be in contention for another couple years, why strain our budget with backups? See if you can find talent in the d-league, make some cheap acuisitions who may or may not pan out, see if our draft picks are going to be good players (starters) or not...when the time is right, we will make some bigger FA acquisitions that will probably move a few guys to the bench, which will strengthen our bench a good bit.

If he's done one thing, it's not handcuff us to a future path. We have tons of options and we just need time to see how everything will work out.

Yeah, I understood the Harangody QO as a result of Gody being a great locker room guy. The last three guys on your roster are always going to be on the bench anyway, so you might as well get a guy with a good attitude who will hop up and high five his teammates after big plays rather than a guy who sulks because he never gets in the game.

Although at this point maybe Gody should be seeing some playing time, because we're getting approximately nothing from our back-up forwards.

Is this a dump on Zeller or am i missing a player? I agree with everything else,. but I think its way early to call out Zeller.
