The Brian Hoyer thread...

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Would have been shocked if he was the long term answer. That is way too unlikely in my eyes. We may never know though.

I'm still just completely devastated. Haven't been this depressed about a sports injury in a while. I was so excited for that game on Thursday, the injury happened right in front of me and I knew he was done. I was positive Hoyer was our long term answer at QB. People I know associated with the team were saying the same thing. We had found a diamond in the rough. A player who was groomed and developed under one of the greatest coaches and QB's of all time. He's cerebral, he knows how to lead, he exudes confidence...the players love him. Hoyer was ready...then it all came to end a few plays into his coming out party on national TV. I wanted to throw up when it happened. I still want to throw up. Fucking Cleveland...

So how does the organization feel about him now? Still planning for him to be the long term solution? Or do they still draft a top flight qb next summer?

You know one thing I've been considering in regards to next years draft - none of the top flight QBs really have leave school. I'm not saying some won't opt into the draft but I could see a few returning and therefore thinning out the picks.

Partially torn ACL should mean that they don't have to delay the process very long for him to be able to go have the ligament transplant. In some cases, when the MCL is also torn, they have to fix that up first and it may be several weeks before they can get the surgery done. I would think that he might even be able to be back for the mid summer mini camps at least, and should be able to compete in Training camp for the job following a slightly aggressive, but not unreasonable timetable.

If he's the long-term solution at QB, he will be next year's starter regardless of our draft plans. Believe that.

He came into the season as the 3rd stringer, and played 2 games. Regardless of how good he looked, I don't see how you could possibly commit to that long term, unless you don't believe in any of the QBs in the draft.

However, there is a scenario where you could draft a QB, sit him behind Hoyer for a year, and if Hoyer still impresses, you deal him or the QB you just drafted. Even that seems farfetched though. First round QBs almost always play right away now.

i would think if the browns think nearly as highly of him as max suggests sounds like there is no reason not to keep him around.

that said 5 games into this season, the browns are 3-2 clearly in the playoff hunt, if they keep winning, (or even playing 500 ball) there wont even be a chance to draft a QB.

Even if they make the playoffs with Weeden, I'm almost certain a franchise QB will be drafted.

They're going to draft another QB. I don't think the plan really changes that much. It's deflating because this was Hoyer's time. Hopefully he comes back fine, and is given another chance. But their thinking process going forward has to be on a QB.

Weeden could break Tom Brady's touchdown mark, and eclipse Peyton's record setting season, and they'd STILL go another direction. Obviously I'm exaggerating, but I think its pretty clear they're desperately looking to go in another direction. He's not going to be on the team next year.

Weeden won the game, played okay, and they still had a QB conference call on the position. If that doesn't spell doom for you, I don't know what else would.

I'd say QB is one of few positions where you should be able to come back from an ACL repair as basically the same player. I'd think the Hoyer of next year should be physically 2013 Hoyer as well.

The delay sucks though.

Carson Palmer? Or did he do other shit to his knee? Because that guy was never the same dude after his knee injury.

I think that more has to do with the mental side more than the physical side.

Hoyer is probably done. I really doubt he is even on the browns roster next year.

True. Most athletes who tear their ACL never play again. Especially one in their twenties....

Not to discredit what Hoyer accomplished in a few weeks, but it was just that, only a few weeks. I felt the same way about Matt Cassel in 2008 and I thought that his 3,000 Yd/27 TD/7 Int year with KC in 2010 validated my beliefs. However, with more plays, games, and seasons, Cassel's weaknesses were exposed. Who knows how Hoyer would've fared longterm.
