Re: The Cleveland Cavaliers Magic Number Thread for Most Ping Pong Balls in May 2011.

it's the math. The team with the worst record had a 25% chance at the first pick and 35.7% chance at the 4th. So about 1 out of every 3 years, they'll pick 4th. I remember 07 because Boston tanked for the 2nd worst record and picked wound up with the 5th pick.

Re: The Cleveland Cavaliers Magic Number Thread for Most Ping Pong Balls in May 2011.

the team with the worst record has a better chance at the 4th pick than they do for the 1st pick. In 07, Memphis had the worst record and got the 4th pick.

Wow, that's true. (1)25%, (2)21.5%, (3)17.8% and then (4)35.7%.
FYI, the 8th slot has 2.8% 3.3% and 3.9% chance for the 1st 3 picks. And (8)72.4%, (9)16.8%, (10)8% for the rest.

There is a nice table showing all the odds at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_Draft_Lottery

guess LJ4MVP beat me to it...

Re: The Cleveland Cavaliers Magic Number Thread for Most Ping Pong Balls in May 2011.

What it ultimately comes down to is money. Irving's gonna get paid, and he's gonna get paid a lot. If his family is in a good situation, there is a POSSIBILITY that he may stay, but if they aren't in the greatest financial position, he's coming out.

except he doesn't get paid if a lockout takes away the season. He just loses a full season of playing time at an age when he could most benefit from playing.

I want to see Championship Trophies and Rings... not Ping Pong Balls...

yeh, if grandma had balls she'd be grandpa.

You do realize how close we've been to winning a championship in the NBA? 3 or 4 times.

  1. 1976. We were underdogs, but if Jim Chones, our best player, wasn't injured, we might've been holding the trophy.
  2. 1989. Does this year need explanation? The Shot is all you need to hear. And maybe Rick's elbow to Price's head.
  3. 2007. This is underrated. Getting to the NBA Finals wasn't an easy task, but LeBron made that happen.
  4. 2010. WTF. This was the closest. LeBron just played like a pussy and quit on us, that's all.
layneroxxx, I know my priorities, so what do you really want to say? I want to hear your answer...

Re: The Cleveland Cavaliers Magic Number Thread for Most Ping Pong Balls in May 2011.

The difficulty doing the odds with two lottery picks is the selection of the first pick drawn affects the odds of the second pick. I put together a model for the odds of the different possibilities if the Cavs pick 1st and the Clippers pick 8th.

First Pick: 28.0%
Second Pick: 24.9%
Third Pick: 21.6%
Forth Pick: 35.5%

There is a ~10% chance that the Cavs get two of the top 4--

Re: The Cleveland Cavaliers Magic Number Thread for Most Ping Pong Balls in May 2011.

Uh, yeh...the answer is obvious. We aren't winning any championship this year. It's like saying you want it to rain money, but guess what? It isn't going to happen.

A team that isn't going to be around next year doesn't help us by winning. What's going to help us win is ping pong balls. At this point you can't have one without the other.

Here's my own answer. Magic number threads usually have a purpose in showing how many games it took to clinch something. But this seems like it's in bad taste, which was the reason for the initial comment. I don't like it. I know it's not going to make things better, but what a difference it makes, just because some asshole decided to do a stunt like this (he's not an asshole because he left, but it still hurts).

Either way, I've already given up on the season, but I've been a fan long enough to want to taste pure victory from my hometown. I can't wait until the team is built up again. But until then, at least I can see the real pieces try to develop.

Re: The Cleveland Cavaliers Magic Number Thread for Most Ping Pong Balls in May 2011.

Huge win for the T-Wolves today. I didn't know they had another one in them.

Re: The Cleveland Cavaliers Magic Number Thread for Most Ping Pong Balls in May 2011.

Sacto beat the Clips today, so that's two pluses in our favor.

Re: The Cleveland Cavaliers Magic Number Thread for Most Ping Pong Balls in May 2011.

Another big win for the T-Wolves. Too bad it came at the hands of the Pistons, but I guess you can't have everything. Go Rockets.

It looks like we pretty much have the worst record wrapped up now with Jamison out for the season. Time to start focusing on the Clippers.... Teams around the Clippers Bucks and Pistons (better records) and Raps and Nets (both 4 wins behind LAC at the moment).

Re: The Cleveland Cavaliers Magic Number Thread for Most Ping Pong Balls in May 2011.

Cant believe the clips beat the rockets Mo needs hurt

Re: The Cleveland Cavaliers Magic Number Thread for Most Ping Pong Balls in May 2011.

Actually, our % is better than 25% because we technically own the Clippers ping pong balls and right now that adds 28 more to our total making it 278 ping pong balls to choose from. Unless, of course, we or the Clippers start actually winning too many games. Even if that happens, I have full confidence in Gilbert and Grant to pull off something. He is just waiting to attack!

Re: The Cleveland Cavaliers Magic Number Thread for Most Ping Pong Balls in May 2011.

If the Clips pick goes up to #6, then the Cavs have a a 31.3% chance for #1 and the chance of getting two picks in the top 4 goes up to almost 22%.

So go Pistons, Nets, and Raptors!!
