The Fire Pat Shurmur Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Sources: Sean Payton deal voided

Within the past year, the multiyear contract extension the Saints announced for Sean Payton in September 2011 was voided by the NFL, making the suspended head coach a free agent after this season and casting questions on how long he will remain in New Orleans, according to league sources.

Payton is expected to become the NFL's most sought-after head coach after this season and there already is speculation in league circles that he could wind up returning to Dallas, where he worked as the assistant head coach from 2003 to 2005, during which time the Dallas Cowboys brought in quarterback Tony Romo, who attended the same college, Eastern Illinois, as Payton.

Just as Payton's role in the bounty scandal has been an ongoing saga with the NFL for the past year, so has his contract.

Payton confirmed the news, according to FoxSports.

As recently as March, when Payton was visiting NFL offices to appeal his yearlong suspension in the bounty scandal, he asked NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for the status of his contract extension and was told it was unsatisfactory as it initially was constituted, sources said.

At issue in the contract was one specific clause that would have enabled Payton to walk away from the deal if general manager Mickey Loomis was suspended, fired or left the New Orleans organization, sources said.

The league believed that any such language in Payton's contract would set a bad precedent for other coaching contracts and rejected the deal well before Loomis was suspended for the first eight games this season for his part in the bounty scandal.

Dating back to roughly the start of this year, the two sides engaged in numerous subsequent conversations to try to resolve the issue but never did.

Saints Bounty Scandal

An NFL investigation found the New Orleans Saints operated a bounty system that rewarded 22 to 27 players for hard hits and for injuring opposing players. Profile »

In the interim, the league has granted Payton permission to work for Saints owner Tom Benson's NBA New Orleans team, and the suspended head coach has been doing some spot work there to earn income.

In a statement issued Sunday morning, the NFL said it had "made no determination" on the status of Payton's contract for next year.

"All contracts between clubs and their employees must be approved by the commissioner, and we do not comment on specific terms of individual contracts," the statement said. "Any comment regarding the matter should come from Coach Payton and the Saints."

Some in the league office believe Payton's contract could toll -- meaning the last year would be put on hold, tying him to New Orleans for the 2013 season -- but there is no evidence to confirm that possibility. Until now, the league has not been asked to review or rule on the contract, according to sources, though some believe it eventually could.

To others, there is no issue. Payton will be a free agent. Some believe Payton's strong relationship with Benson will be enough to keep him in New Orleans long term.

But others are more skeptical, knowing that the suspended head coach has undergone some personal changes in his life that have included going through a divorce and spending plenty of time in Dallas. He bought a house in the city early last year.

When Benson initially announced last year the extension for Payton that never got league approval, he said: "I am very pleased to announce this contract extension today for Sean that will run through the 2015 season. Our goal is to continue to build a tradition of winning here in New Orleans and Sean represents that tradition."

Jason Garrett's first full season as head coach for the Cowboys in 2011 ended with an 8-8 record and losses in four of the last five games, including a de facto NFC East Championship Game against the New York Giants, which kicked off their run to a Super Bowl title.

The Cowboys are 3-4 entering a Sunday night, Week 9 game at Atlanta.

For Garrett, last season was the first of a four-year contract, the financial terms of which are unknown. He was the highest paid assistant coach in the league at $3 million a season before taking over the head coaching job.

New HC?

Question? Since 1999 is there a team in the NFL that has consistantly hired a worse group of HC's than the Cleveland fn Browns? Chris Palmer? Butch Davis? Romeo Crenell? Pat Shurmur. That group collectively, has to be, by far, thee single worst set of HC's in the NFL by a mile.

My God. I know we've also been fairly devoid of talent most of the time as well. But, that list is just an absolute abomination.

Jesus he was awful, even worse than usual. End of the half, force the Ravens to punt. First play he runs the ball and takes 30 seconds off the clock. Which is fine if he decided he just wants to run the clock down and go into the half. The next play Weeden is in the shotgun and trying to move the ball. What the fuck was going through his head here? Worst part is they have a timeout and are within 10 yards of a TD. What happened? They ran out of time and kicked a FG. I bet he wished he had those 30 seconds back.

2 illegal formations, back to back false starts, burned his timeouts at the end way too early, went for it on 4th and 2 when the Ravens were already in field goal range (essentially ending the game), repeatedly calling passes on 3rd and 1, too many men on the field. This guy just is not an NFL head coach, he could be a decent QB coach but no higher than that. I don't think he has the ability to be a huge cog in the offense. Get him out of here, this team has talent but they don't have a leader.

Missed Mangini.

When we start seeing this team regress rather than progress, it's a scary situation. These young players need guidance, they need a strong authority figure that they can respect with a hard-working no bull shit attitude.

Shurmur is an absolute detriment and the team is putting itself at serious risk of moving backwards if they continue to let this guy screw things up.

Firing is not an option anymore. It is a must. And it needs to happen NOW.

Shurmur has absolutely no business being around a football organization. Not head coach, not OC, not ball boy.

Aside from his absolutely atrocious play-calling/management/everything else, Shurmur cant even fucking function as a human being. Question for all Browns fans: Have you ever seen an emotion show itself on Shumur's face throughout his career in Cleveland? No? There you have it. The man doesn't know how to get angry, and there has been plenty to be pissed off about in regard to Cleveland football.

You know it's bad when a guy named Apathy is ragging on someone for a lack of emotion.

Fire Shurmur.

You want to question his abilities as a coach, that's fine. I don't give a shit if he shows emotion if he can coach. He has shown emotion on the sideline, he was chewing out a ref on the sideline and I could very clearly see him say "that's bullshit." Also he's getting chippy with the media because they're asking him to explain himself, which he can't do.

Odds Shurmur is named the new head coach of Aston Villa?

Next year I'm going to dress up as Phil Dawson for Halloween...scariest thing opponents see every Sunday. -_-

Shurmur did have a little passion...he also had that silent psycho-about to cry look on his face most of the game.

I'd like if anyone other than Shurmur ran the team (Childress, Juron, et. al.). I don't think Haslem makes the move now, as emphasized previously.

I'm like 75% sure that this team has 2 more wins and we're in the hunt for the post season if we have a different head coach.

I loved his postgame presser. Paraphrasing my favorite part:

Media: "Why did you punt in your opponent's territory 2 weeks ago, but go for it deep in your own territory this week with your defense playing so well? Doesn't that go against your nature?"

Patricia: "What does that mean? What do you mean my nature? I don't know you and I am sure you don't know me too well so I don't know what that means. If it would have worked though you would have been saying how great a call it was and how gutsy it was. But now you all have something fun to talk about all week since it didn't work."

LMAO the guy is such an arrogant dickhead and he is completely clueless. It pisses me off he's made millions being a complete idiot.
