Addressing the hole at center

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If the Cavs want a cheap shot blocker how about Thabeet from OKC or Withey from New Orleans? OKC just drafted another C and the Pels just traded for Asik. Neither Thabeet or Withey offer much outside of shot blocking but the Cavs really need at least one more rim protector on their roster going into the season.

You can add Jeremy Tyler to the list of unspectacular bigs available in FA.

The New York Knicks will trade guard Wayne Ellington, forward Jeremy Tyler and a 2016 second-round pick to the Sacramento Kings for forwards Quincy Acy and Travis Outlaw, people with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports.

The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet announced.

The Kings are expected to waive Tyler and they could use the stretch provision on Ellington to improve their salary cap situation. But that final decision has not been made.

1 of the many bits of good news from the Love story today is that the deal appears to be a 2 team trade where Wiggins, Bennett and a pick goes to Minny just for K Love and no one else. If that's true that means we would have kept the 3 non-guaranteed deals. That means we have the ability to go get a 'rim protector' if he's available.

How long until the Thomas contract can be combined with other players? Sometime in October I thought.

Anyway, I wonder if we are going to use the contracts to make a trade before the season starts? Or if we will hold on to them and wait for the deadline. I would guess we would want to use them before the season.

I know some people were tossing around the idea of bringing in Greg Oden to play a few minutes a night at the center spot, but with this recent news and all of his other on and off the course issues I'd be surprised if he ever is given a serious shot to make a NBA roster again.

Right. If Oden decides to continue his career he'll most likely be suspended for a good portion of the year couple that with the on-going concerns of him getting injured, and being a pretty bad influence for our young core. I wouldn't touch him with a 39 and a half foot pole.

As soon as I heard the Nuggets rejected a first rounder for Mozgov (out of spite alone, it seems) I thought of Withey. He looks like a lurpy dork but the guy protects the rim like his life depends upon it. I have no idea if the Pelicans are willing to part with him.

That damn Sanders contract... He would be perfect.

it's not even his contract that scares me. if he played like he did during his contract year you could make the argument he's worth 10+Mio/year. the problem is that he's batshit crazy, not Boogie Cousins kind of crazy, he's worse than that (do a little research on him, from punching his teammates to going into rehab this summer. he does it all...)

edit, just saw your post Keys. Withey is exactly the type of player we should look for. only played around 11min/game last year but was a great rim protector in that limited time. he was able to hold opponents to 42.9% at the rim. only 4 starting bigs (players who played more than 20 minutes a game) were better last year (the Lopez brothers, Sanders and Hibbert)

(for the people who want to do their own research nba.com has launched a great stats site a while ago: http://stats.nba.com/playerTracking...FGP_DEFEND_RIM&sortOrder=ASC&filters=MIN*G*20 )

Funny hearing withey's name thrown it there. I've liked his game since college in a bill wennington kind of way. I don't see him as a starter, but as a 15 minute a game guy I think he would be good and cheap-ish.

Withey, Ajinca, and Patric Young will all be vying for the backup C minutes behind Asik in New Orleans. Ajinca is another interesting name and a legit 7 footer to boot. He was a first round pick by Charlotte in 2008 but seemed to be coming into his own this past season in New Orleans. He seems like a classic big man late bloomer type and just turned 26. I would take either Withey or Ajinca as a situational shot blocker. I'm guessing one of them could be had for cheap sometime between now and the beginning of the season.

I haven't heard much about Bernard James in this thread so here's some background info.

Fun fact: The Cavs worked him out and drafted him. Bernard was traded to Dallas for Zeller.

He might fit the Joel Anthony type role here in Cleveland.

Ennes Kanter maybe?

Utah is on the line when it comes to salary cap limit... they are almost hitting it.

Kanter makes around 5M. They decided to bet on Favors, whose contract now is of 12M. Hayward got max. Kanter's contract expires soon and they obviously won't be able to keep him. Also, Kanter and Favors playing together kind of hinder each other's development. Plus they have Gobert on the rise, the guy is huge.

What could we offer Utah to get Kanter?

I have always liked Kanter as an offensive finisher in the pick and roll game, but now that the Cavaliers have secured Love... his strengths are no longer a need and his weaknesses are not helping the franchise patch its defensive hole.
