The Jonas V thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Seems like the short leash strategy has it's pros. Jonas is doing pretty good lately. Averaging 13.1ppg , 10.4rpg , 1.5 bpg in 31.5 mpg in last 10 games and together with K Lowry is vital to team's success (8-2 in last 10).

That wasnt short leash they were developing him with...

It was bad chemistry. Subtract Gay and commit to JV and he looks like just as good if not better of a prospect as Drummond.

Watching this game last night against Wizards and you would THINK he is not playing well because his stat line isnt impressive, but he has a PG's IQ out there. he is sacrificing things to make the unit of 5 guys play smoother. He has the same kind of IQ that Karasev looks to have.

He is making the game VERY hard for Gortat and being so aggressive on boards that Amir Johnson and Patrick Patterson are given room to look like better players than they really are.

Before the Rudy trade, I was thinking, oooooh what if Masaij would have to package JV with Gay to get rid of his contract... now, no way in hell. Not with how he is playing since that trade. He literally looks like a young Vlade Divac. The Divac who shined in that finals against the Bulls. Crazy high IQ and offensive skillset for a center. Young Marc Gasol without the baby weight. In another year, he could challenge Roy Hibbert for best all around center in the East. Not the highlight guy who makes mistakes but is so damn talented like Drummond, but definitely the guy who will win you games and most importantly, your center for the next decade

(kicks his cat)

JV is the only draft pick that disturbs me. Sure we'd draft Drummond ahead of Dion if the draft was redone but no one really knew where we we were going and Drummond had a lot of question marks. Jv on the other hand seemed to be everyone's consensus pick both in terms of talent and fit.

Plus I think Dion can be an all star caliber player someday. Just don't seethat with Tristan

I really wonder if there were some behind the scenes issues with JV. We all heard the reports that he would stay over longer than expected if drafted by the Cavs. Whether or not that was true, you have to wonder if that played a role in the selection.

It's never been verified on the board here as far as I remember, but that was the strong insinuation.

Man, if Grant really did want Jonas and got railroaded by his agent, it's kinda crazy to think how different this team would've looked if we took Jonas AND Grant was able to move up one more time to get Klay like he was trying. People would be singing a very different tune about him that's for sure.

I do not believe those reports to be true. Jonas seemed pretty darn humble from his early days and his only dream was to play in the NBA. I think he would've been ecstatic to play for an organization such as the Cavs. I believe did invest around 2 million dollars (the buyout) of his own money to come to play in this league. Then, there's also the Big Z connection too.

A core of Kyrie/Jonas/Drummond/Oladipo would have been something else, but of course hindsight is 20-20.

I didn't believe the Jonas/agent thing prevented us from drafting JV. It was just a bunch of BS excuse imo. JV wasn't highly regarded enough at that time to demand anything let alone force Gran'ts hand into what? Drafting and trading him to Toronto? I would understand if it was the Lakers, Boston, Chicago etc...but Toronto? Gimme a break.

If I'm not mistaken it had something to do with people hating the Cavs in Lithuania because we never wanted Z to play for his national team. Team had a bad rap there.

I still don't buy it. I think CG had TT rated higher and wanted to have Kyrie and his running mate in the same year. He couldn't wait one more year for JV. I don't buy the argument of an entire nation holding one team hostage lol.

Lithuanians don't hate the Cavs. Of course, there are always idiots, but that can be said for any country in the world. As far as I know, the more knowing fans who truly understood the situation and Z's injury history had nothing against this organization. I really doubt that to be a legit reason. I think it may have just been a speculation from the FO, which then turned into an excuse for not drafting the guy. That's my perception anyway.

Grant just isn't isn't a good talent scout

his draft picks have show that....bar kyrie you can easily say that there were better players that went below our draft pick.

Bennett is a bust and even though it was a weak draft should have taken noel or oladipo/

Chad Ford said during a guest stint on the B.S. Report that Valanciunas's agent was unwilling to give the Cavs a commitment that Jonas would come over to the NBA after one more season. Without that commitment, the Cavs were hesitant to draft him even though he was the guy they wanted. They were trying to rebuild post-LeBron and didn't want to draft a guy who didn't want to be there.

The speculation from Ford was that the agent wanted Jonas to play for Toronto (who had the fifth pick) because it's considered an international team, popular in Europe, and, at that time, had quite a few international players on the roster. Colangelo built it that way.

I see no reason not to believe this story.

The reasoning seems poor though. You pass on legit 7 footer because you didn't want to wait a year? We wanted to lose anyway and were planning to for about 3 years: seems strange to me at least

I guess CG thought having a premier center is easily obtainable. Whiffing on young centers on two consecutive drafts is really a killer.
