I'll work on that one, although it's a little tougher because the Cavs technically don't control their own destiny in that scenario since San Antonio has one less loss than they do. The only way (or at least the easiest) to calculate a magic number is to go by things such as number of losses and games left to play, and if two teams could conceivably end up with the same record, then you bring tiebreakers into it.
The best I could give you is a hypothetical:
If the Spurs were to lose their next game, and thus end up with 25 losses on the year, the magic number for the Cavs over them would be 14.
That magic number would guarantee a tie of the two teams. Currently, the Cavs hold the tiebreaker over San Antonio because they are leading the Central Division, whereas the Spurs are in third place in the Southwest.
So the magic number would be 15 then, correct? You don't need to control to your own destiny to have a magic number.
