The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

So I'm hopping ahead here and have went way down the rabbit hole when it comes to the ghost in winterfell. Reading this theory and that about who the hooded man is, am I missing something or are people going way to deep.

Is it not obvious that
Mance and the spearwives committed most of the murders, with Big Walder committing the other? And is it not likely that Mance is the hooded man?

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

I haven't read the books. I don't want specific examples, but have any important plot points differed from the show? Just wondering if Martin is messing with people who have read the books.

To me, the biggest deviation was in the third season when Melisandre sought out the Brotherhood and met Arya and Thoros. That didn't happen in the books. She never went off on her own to find a boy with King's blood in the books. The whole scene of her asking how Thoros managed to bring him back, asking what the other side was like, and wondering why Thoros had that power was really enlightening. You get the sense Thoros is probably worshipping the correct way, and she is not.

And then you have that scene with her and Arya. Again, she never went out on her own so she never crossed paths with Arya. For her to tell Arya that they will meet again is probably the largest deviation to date. At no point in the books are you led to believe that their paths will ever cross, and that scene basically tells us yes, they'll see each other later and it's probably going to be important.

Yeah, forgot all about that one.

It made sense why they did it, though. It cost them about ten minutes of total screen time to completely eliminate Edric Storm (who was another of Robert's bastards in the books and was the one Davos saved from the fires rather than Gendry) from the plot. The real question is whether or not Gendry finds his way back to the Brotherhood (he never left in the books), which seems rather unlikely given how they sold him out.

I'm not sure Mance being the hooded man makes sense given his dialogue with Theon. What right would Mance of all people have to call someone a turncloak? He turned his cloak too! I think it's much more likely that the hooded man is one of Robb's bannermen, or someone who was in Winterfell before Ramsay razed it. Another theory I've read that's interesting is that there actually was no hooded man, or rather that the hooded man was Theon Greyjoy.

You're likely right that the spearwives committed most of the murders, though, aside from Little Walder of course.

I thought it was Mance. He doesn't consider himself a turn cloak for leaving the watch, which is like prison for most. He sees himself as a free man who escaped from the bondage of the wall.

He still has loyalty and honor, just not to the watch but to the free folk. He would see Theon as a turncoat for what he did to his friends and the family that took care of him.

I just don't see Mance as the type to call someone a turncloak. I've personally always thought that the hooded man could be
Robett Glover, who could have slipped in to Winterfell in Manderly's party. He was with Robb in battle, so he would be very familiar with Theon, and he's one of the Northern lords who is still actively opposing the Boltons in the fifth book.

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

**never read the books**

I had no idea what was going to happen! No idea how he was going to die/when he was going to. Thought in the Church b/c of the previous Red Wedding. Thought he was going to go fight Tyrion. Thought the former Kings guard (forget his name) who went to Sansa afterwards had something to do with it.

I loved the scene with Tywin, Cersei & Oberyn. When Melisandre burned the people, that was pretty powerful.

Great episode and love it every week. From what all of you are saying about this season, I am jacked. I don't come in here until Tuesdays b/c watching it Monday night makes sure I don't get sucked into Dancing With the Stars w/the girl.

I love that LF still hasn't made an appearance this season, yet
his influence has already been felt in a major way. I imagine show watchers have already forgotten what a twat beard he is.

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

quote from Kit Harrington:

I think the biggest development that’s ever happened to him happens at the end of this season. There’s a specific scene at the end of this season where you see a real coldness in him, and that comes from various things that have happened this season—not least by the start of the season where we learn that his whole family is dead. He really chooses his side and grows up in a way where there’s no sentimentality left. I think he’s been quite sentimental in the past about things, but this season, there’s no fucking around with it. By the end, he’s a cold person.

Book readers: what do you think he is referring to?
My money is on possibly becoming Jon Stark, Lord of Winterfell. It's too early for the baby swap with Mance's son, or anything lord commander related. Although, I like to imagine that it would be his decision to kill Ygritte himself when she attacks with all the other wildlings because she is about to kill Sam or something. That would be epic.

Not sure if you're being serious with the
Jon Stark lord of Winterfell stuff. Not only has that not happened in the books, that's unlikely to happen, period.

Isn't his name Kit Harrington or was that a joke because his character's name is Jon :chuckles:

Anyways...if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Having Jon kill Ygritte would be okay though.

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

I'm nearly through book 3 and up to date with the lannister plots, but obviously some stuff is far ahead with other characters. The third book and read about 700pages in a fortnight. Its so much better than the second book. i'm really enjoying how the tv show differs and 'soaps' up the relationships to make it easy to track allies etc.. i was kind of disappointed in howthey have made it more 'realistic' i want a blue beard on daario etc.. My current thinking is mallisandre prophecy
was about dany but she got the wrong heir to the throne
i've always assumed the dialogue was mainly copied but there is some great writing on the show that gets to the crux and is well crafted.

Stannis' offer to Jon is what I am referring to, in that he makes the CHOICE to not become Jon Stark.

Accident. :chuckles:

You'll probably change who you think Azor Ahai reborn is after the fifth book. :chuckles:

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

I'd still bet it's Dany that is Azor Ahai. I think people keep digging when the answer is obvious. The day the red star was in the sky she literally sat in a fire all night and dragons were born around her. It's her.
