The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

Just want to thank those that encouraged me to read the books. First was a bit dull (as knew what was happening) second had some nice parts missed from series 2. But oh my god the third is just crazy good. This season can't hope to fit in all the amazing parts of the back end of storm of swords! Read the whole book in 3 weeks and now have no one to talk to about it as everyone I know is behind the show. If they manage to pull off the battles and the plot twist this year GOT will be the best show for many years. Off to start Book 4

Dat epilogue...

Speaking of which, Lena Headey may have hinted at it today (WARNING, extremely vague spoiler ahead):

3 hours into the first book. Kinda hard to read because nothing really different has happened.

Unfortunately you can't do that. I mean you can, but you miss SO much later.

Martins writing is so subtle. I'm in the middle of my second read now, and nearly every chapter there's something where I'm like "how did I miss THAT the first time?"

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

Stereo is right. The show is in my opinion the best show on TV, and that isn't just because I love ASOIAF. But if you really want to enjoy the story rather than just reading to find out what would happen later in the show then I feel just skipping a book would be a mistake. When I re-read it for the 2nd time I couldn't believe how many little things I missed that really enhanced my enjoyment of the series. For example (one of many), in GOT Martin makes a throwaway comment about an unknown archer named Anguy winning the archery contest during the Hand's tourney. I think Ned even makes him an offer to be on his personal guard too. That archer turned out to be the Anguy we meet in the third book with the brotherhood without banners. I think he makes several comments about Thoros as well. These little nuances are in literally every chapter.

Plus the show has chosen to entirely ignore a huge portion of the plot regarding prophecies, visions, dreams, etc. You would miss out on those sorts of things too, along with many others. Just read the book.

I think we are actually starting to get that a little through Bran's Green Dreams in the show.

Speaking of which, did anyone else notice that both Dany in the House of the Undying and Bran through the weir wood both saw
”Snow" on the Iron Throne? I think people dismiss it because winter is coming and all. But we know David and Dan know how the series ends. Wonder if it's a hint we haven't got in the books.

I assume you're interpreting it as Jon Snow sitting on the throne.

I didn't. Wasn't the throne room all decrepit and destroyed and full of of snow? I thought of an ending where the Long Night came again and Winter stretched across Westeros, nobody sat on the Iron Throne because the final battle ended in some sort of Pyhrric victory..or worse...that left the continent in shambles. Where nobody really wins and everybody is scattered. But, that sounds like too much of a bitter ending, even for GRRM.

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

I think after this season Game of Thrones will make its mark as one of the better shows of all-time. I still don't think it will ever top The Wire because the showrunners are a little too obsessed with pointless nudity and sexposition (I mean, I love tits, but it does lower my opinion of the show artistically), but you're going to see some amazing things this year if they mostly stick to the script of the books.

Excellent deal. The first book starts a little slow, but once you finish it you will be totally on board for as many more books as this motherfucker can write.

It's part of the time period and story. Just because you're uncomfortable with it in today's society doesn't mean they were.

Look at the Roman empire...

It could have been ash too

Sure, I think that's the main interpretation everyone took away, but it just reminded me of
Melisandre looking into the fires and all she sees is "Snow"

Those wildfire jars gotta fit under the category of Chekhov's gun. Jamie said there was enough to destroy the city, certainly enough to make the throne room look like it did in the aforementioned vision from Bran/Dany.

Actually, it does look a lot like snow, but what caused the roof/sides of the palace to be blown apart?

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

I really am enjoying how the actor playing Oberyn is playing the character. I love his scenes with the Lannisters. Is he what you guys pictured him to be in the books?
