The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

Did he become one, though? I can't recall.

No, he didn't. I was referring to the part of your post where you said "all we've seen them do with adults is kill them." Well, here was one Walker who actually married a grown man. Or so we are led to believe.

You know, old George is really setting this thing as some complex struggle between various deities and factions and he's only sort of hinted at the back story. I REALLY hope it isn't just a giant troll and the Walkers, in fact, are just a LOTR Orc like race, bent only on destruction because they are orcs. He's set this up that these things either were created by someone/something with more of a purpose or reason for what they do, or themselves as free-thinking beings have more of a purpose/reason for what they do.

To ultimately reveal they are just his version of orcs would be disappointing at this point.

I think it was interesting how the show runners decided to open the episode with Grey-Worm and Missandei discussing their former lives as slaves and that Grey-Worm was taken as a baby and he remembers nothing but being an unsullied. Counter to that the episode ends with a baby being turned into a white-walker so that he will know nothing but being a white-walker. Maybe there is supposed to be a comparison drawn between White Walkers and slaves? Perhaps there are different hierarchies in white walker society where the lower classes are all essentially brain-washed slaves who do whatever their lords order them to. I definitely think there are some intracicies here that we are not aware of just yet.

Or maybe they are orcs.

Ah okay. That makes more sense, then. I guess technically they let that dude live in the first episode too, although that was a slight deviation from the books. Regardless, the Night's King story aside (and it might not be true, either at all or not entirely), every time we've seen the Others they haven't been merciful to humans. The lone exception is Craster, but we know that they allowed him to survive in exchange for his sacrifices.

I don't think the Others will simply be evil. In fact, I think he's made comments in the past that that isn't true. I would imagine they have some motivating factor that is the cause of their apparent hatred for mankind. As you yourself said, perhaps they are a creation of the Children (I've thought similarly in the past), or controlled by them. Or perhaps there was some sort of truce that was violated by humans and then subsequently forgotten over the years. There are many options, and it will probably end up being one that none of us saw coming.

Edit: Good catch on the parallel there, Cardiac.

Yeah, I'd be shocked if the Others are just...a plain old villain race bent on bringing Long Night and eternal winter over Westeros. I doubt that is the case. If it is, I'd be extremely disappointed. Guarantee there is some twist involving their origin and their purpose that nobody will see coming.

Thing is, none of his twists have really been out of nowhere or too intricate to figure out... especially once it got popular and message boards got busy. I really think the theory of the COTF controlling the Others is right on the money. Makes too much sense.

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

It was both. They even played that scene in the "previously on Game of Thrones"

Ah OK.

PS. I just NOW realized that Jon Hamm is sitting on the throne in your avatar. I swear I thought it was Steve Carell this whole time.

Yea, just reading some stuff, no where in the books can I actually find someone saying the children of the forest fought against the walkers. Only that the Last Hero sought them out for help. But that story never was finished by Old Nan.

Now, the problem is this, are we not told that the Children supplied men with dragon glass? Or is that simply implied somewhere, but never "confirmed" by some old tale or a prophecy.

I think Sam found that in an old Watch document when he was combing through their library.

For those who think that the Children and the WW are connected, do you also believe that
Bran
could ultimately become the antagonist of this story, considering his position at the end of ADWD?

I'd be down for that.

That's right.

Speaking of Sam, if we are too actually figure out all of these mysteries, my guess is he's the one that does it while at the Citadel. I honestly can't wait for Sam chapters where all he's doing is reading old shit.

I've thought that for a while now, and think it could still be a possibility beyond the Children and the Walkers being connected.
Melisandre certainly seemed to think that Bloodraven was fighting for the Others when she saw him in her flames in book five.

Up in the air. We've basically got what seem like conflicting stories. Jojen seems to tell Bran he's the only one that can stop the coming destruction.
Meanwhile, old red sees in her flames that Bran, in fact, is the coming destruction.
Someone is right and someone is wrong.

Throw in Old Nan's story about the Last Hero, and Bran seems to be a parallel. So I don't know.

You would also have the irony of the kid who only ever wanted to be a great knight and hero turning out to be a great villain. I could see Martin loving that.

I'm inclined to believe that it's going down that road and I would absolutely love it. So many options if the COTF are working with the Others, but the two in the forefront to me:

1. Bran becomes the anti-hero to Westeros and uses the Others/WeirwoodNet to wreak havoc.
2. Bran gains all of this power and plays a large role in dismantling the Others by turning on the COTF.

I think we'll get the first glimpse into his path from the Theon arc in TWOW.

I also love the theory regarding the paste that Bran eats being made from Jojen. Messed up... but intriguing and hella dark.

All because Jaime (a character most people like at this point) pushed him out of the window. Quite the butterfly effect.

Incest leads to the destruction of your universe, kids.
