The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

Just read yesterday that the teaser they put out got over 3.5 million hits on Youtube in a matter of 3 days, which is the most views of any online HBO promo ever.

Guess people like this show.

I'm ecstatic that people like it- if not a little surprised. It's a very complex story and the average goon who watches these shows, from what I gather reading Internet forums, doesn't even know the names of any of the characters let alone catch the tiny intricacies that book readers will surely appreciate.

The good thing is the popularity means we should see A Storm of Swords adapted, hopefully, as rumored, into two seasons. Beyond that I'd say there is no guarantee...but I think A Storm of Swords is a lock to be scene on television.

And let's be honest. If done correctly, that could be two of the best seasons of television. Ever.

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

Not a huge spoiler but regarding a scene in that 'Shadow' teaser:

Why is Catelyn pointing a knife at Baelish? Lots of people questioning this scene, as it isn't in the book. From what I remember, Baelish doesn't get to the Tyrell camp until after Catelyn leaves and you know who is dead.

Also anyone else surprised we didn't get a 'Tower of Joy' flashback in Season 1? That's a pretty crucial moment in the lore of the series. It's also absolutely one of my FAVORITE scenes in A Game of Thrones. Ned and his "wraiths" advancing on the three Kingsguard, the dialogue was fantastic and the scene just so ominous. "And now it begins." "No, now it ends."

Loved it. I think it was a fever dream/flashback from after his fight with Jaime in the streets. It could have easily been put into the show.

As to the part with Petyr, I'm not sure. But my guess would be an added scene where Catelyn questions Petyr's intentions.

I believe Martin tries to use this show to flesh out and compliment the books a little more. Now that he's so far into the story, he can look back and add a few things to compliment some of the story arcs which are coming in the final two books. The frequent conversations between Petyr and Varys did a lot of that in the first season of the show. I'm now more convinced than ever that this series will culminate in 3 major head-to-head clashes, and while there's a lot of gray in the plot so far, I think in the end it will become pretty black and white, or black and also black as the case may be.

As for the Tower of Joy, I think it's because GRRM's most important surprise is buried in there, and it would be far too easy for people to connect the dots if they saw it on screen. It's easier to hide hints in two paragraphs in an 800 page book, but much harder if you put it on screen. Still, they'll have to flesh out Lyanna more somehow at some point.

Lots of spoilers in regards to book 5:

I think, in the end, Jon will be the rightful heir to the Iron Throne as well as the King of the North. That is, if you don't believe the Blackfyre's claim of the throne. I think he is also the Prince who was Promised, and Azor Ahai reborn. Stannis is just a fake.

One of the more intriguing theories is that Aegon is not really a Targaryen, but actually the last male Blackfyre. The Golden Company intends to win him the throne, thereby fulfilling their 700 year-old vow of putting a Blackfyre in the Iron Throne. Aegon would actually be Illyrio's son, and Illyrio's widow carried the Blackfyre line. Varys and Illyrio aren't actually working to put a Targaryen back on the throne, they intend to put a Blackfyre there. It would also explain Danny's prophecy to beware of the mummer's dragon.

As far as Stannis goes, I think he's still alive, and is now under the protection of the Manderlys, who intend to help him defeat the Bolton's. Though the Manderlys have made it clear they support the Starks above all else, so it would be interesting to see what terms Stannis would agree to in exchange for Lord Manderly's protection.

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

...Speaking of the Manderlys... Anyone else catch the, um, pie reference in ADWD? :chuckles: Amazing. Took me a couple days after reading it to realize what actually happened there.

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

Lucked out recently...flipped by and saw the scene where big brother is checking out Daenerys Targaryen's naked body, then watched her climb ever so slowly into a hot bath.

Yummy.

Love all this and totally agree. I'd still love to see the Tower of Joy, wish it was on the Blu Ray or something. They could have gotten artsy with it and made it difficult to interpret or gotten clever with it and still showed a great scene.

Spoilers in white:

Jon is definitely Azor Ahai and is definitely a Targaryen. If GRRM changes it, it's because he's trolling and is upset people found out so easily. I just don't see what else it could be leading up to besides a Howland Reed revelation or some shit. I also think the PWWP is Azor Ahai, I don't think there is a difference...could be wrong.

Absolutely friggin LOVE the Aegon theory with him being a Blackfyre. Nice! Have not even heard that one yet. I'd be very happy if that was what it turned out to be.

Stannis definitely still lives, I know the Winds of Winter sample chapter takes place before Ramsay's infamous letter HOWEVAH! I must say Stannis will not be killed off screen, and in that sample chapter with Theon he certainly seemed like he had some tricks up his sleeves. He even told the knight (I forget who) who he was sending to Essos to recruit sellswords that you "may even hear rumors that I am dead." So I dunno. I like Stannis. He is a hard man, even borderline cruel at times, but he is just. Can't deny that. He rewards his friends and smashes his enemies into oblivion.

I have no idea who will end up on the Iron Throne or how the story will end. I'll be somewhat cheated if Jon ends up on the throne, I mean, I almost feel like if he is Azor Ahai he needs to die or something. But there's just so many questions, like will the Night's Watch and the Wall still have a place in the world at the end of the series? If it will, I can't see Jon leaving it. Then again, how is Jon going to get revived? He was stabbed to death at the end of ADWD...everybody assumes he will come back but how?

Fucking A man I hope GRRM hurries up on TWOW!

Arya has eeked out the Imp as my favorite character. She has more balls than the entire kingsguard.

Re: The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread

Yeah she has some great moments. But a lot of characters do. She's in my top 5 POVs, though.

My favorite Arya moment, in A Storm of Swords: *Spoiler obv*

I said this before but the scene where the Brotherhood Without Banners has Arya and the Hound+, and Lord Beric Dondarrion duels the Hound with his flaming sword, I seriously just shit my pants. That scene is going to be so amazing on TV, with the Hound catching fire and freaking out and stuff. Finally showing some vulnerability. And then the shock after the Hound wins, and Beric's broken body is dragged away by Thoros of Myr, and Arya tells the Hound to go to hell. Lord Beric pops up behind her, alive again, and says, "I believe he already has."

Euuuuugh. SO fucking good! I envision that as being the end to an episode in Season 3 or 4.

I just finished CoK and she has some great moments in that book. I was scanning through SoS and saw some chapters labeled Jaime. I can't wait to read those... Considering he's your favorite so I'm sure it's some good stuff.

I have a free preview of HBO and caught a few episodes. I like picturing Arya as that cute little girl instead of a child version of Howard Stern. Lol.

Haha, I used to do that too. Scan the new book when I bought it and see what POVs it had, and I was like, "Oooooh!" when I saw ASOS had Jaime chapters. You'll be on the bandwagon eventually.

Arya's description has always been a long face and no one ever said she was pretty.. they call her horse face. I pictured a young Howard Stern when I read about her. Haha.

Oh, yeah.

I always find it odd because you don't think she's pretty in the books (she's still just a child, keep in mind) but later on several characters mention that she is very pretty. I don't remember when and where, but I hope that isn't a spoiler. lol.

It's just a contrast with her sister, probably, who is considered beautiful in a traditional, womanly sort of way in Westeros. Whereas Arya is a tomboy, a bit of a wild, free spirit. Basically, Maisie Williams is exactly how I pictured Arya.

Yeah, I haven't liked Sansa from the beginning. Idk. Never trusted the bitch. Lol. Don't like how she treated Arya and Jon Snow.

Meh, she loves Arya. I don't remember what she thought about Jon Snow. I thought she was fine with him? I know Catelyn does not like him for obvious reasons.

I like Sansa. You saw a lot of her development in ACOK which you just finished. Lots of characters grow on you over time, some of them because we finally get to look inside their minds and see their feelings, motivations, etc...and others just because they develop and change.

GRRM is a fantastic writer. Hurry up and read ASOS so I can talk about it.
