The Official True Detective Scene

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So...thoughts?

I honestly thought more would be answered in regards to the rest of the cult, and the episode offered no explanation of the potential involvement of Maggie's family.

First impression, I was pretty underwhelmed.

Totally agree.

I knew that one hour wouldn't be enough to finish this properly. No mention of the 5 men, an obvious theme. No follow up on who the guy strapped to the bed was. No Tuttles. All that is passable I suppose... but nothing about Marty's daughter?? Solid show but was expecting a much better finale.

Edit: Agree with Jack, eff a spoiler.

They were mentioned, Rust was upset that they got away and couldn't answer all the questions about the entire cult. That's where Woody sums it up that it's not perfect and they got their guy.

Maybe we assumed too much about the daughter, the grandfather, and everything else. Maybe we can't get closure on everything.

Maybe closure comes in later. Has anyone read any of this guy's work? Are the next episodes tied in at all?

I was satisfied with it and I think they'll be getting some Golden Globes or whatever fucking award is for shows and not movies.

Way too much to wrap up. But I think the intent is to leave the viewer in a state of wonderment.

The conversation in the hospital room with Rust and Marty-- they didn't get them all, and they knew that.
But loved the snarky attitude that Rust still had towards Marty. The whole ordeal made them closer, but still the same "fuck you" attitude.

Overall, I enjoyed the series. But I'm so read for Game of Thrones.

Pretty sure the next season will have nothing at all to do with this season. It will be a totally different plot with different characters and (probably) different actors. There's always the chance they go the American Horror Story route and tell a totally different story with some of the same actors coming back to play different characters.

I think it will be different actors and detectives, but maybe the plots intertwine a little.

Maybe you have other detectives looking in to different members of this cult and they get taken down one at a time?

No clue here, but I'm excited to find out.

Good call, the Tuttles were indeed mentioned. Forgot about that. They built up Audrey's troubled childhood arc in three episodes though. Just seems unfinished.

They also did follow up on the guy tied up. It was sherif Childress, Errol's dad.

I also like that it wasn't wrapped up into a neat little bow. They took down the heart of the cult, but true to life, the really powerful people got away.

Also, wouldn't be surprised if future seasons still follow the Carcosa theme, but from a different perspective.

Really loved the ambiguousness set up about the natural vs supernatural aspect of the show. Did Rust hallucinate that cosmic vision because of the ash and aluminum smell, or did he really see Carcosa? Ledoux called him a priest in episode 5, and now Errol called him a priest too in this episode. What did they know about him? Also that line "take off your mask" was from the original King in Yellow play.

I hope the next season goes in a different direction.

It is, this story is finished tonight. A whole new setting/universe for S2 and all subsequent seasons as it's an anthology show. Looking forward to seeing who they cast for S2.

Him walking through that ruin was intense.

Like Woody said, it's not a perfect world, but they got their guy. Thought it was a great show overall.

Maybe, as this show isn't linear and won't have Woody and MMC on the next season, they might be other detectives going after the rest of the guys in the Tuttle clan that were involved.

I can't wait until next weekend so I can watch the whole thing again and get a better grasp of all the nuances that I might have missed.

I'm extremely interested in how the rest of this show pans out. What can they do to follow this up? How do they keep it going? Now that it's been a hit, they shouldn't have trouble recruiting some really solid actors that want to be involved in the project. I just hope they keep it going and it doesn't die here.
+1 re: the excitement about a re-watch, tho definitely going to wait longer than just a week.

anyway, i really liked it. only real issue was the lightbulb moment with the green paint. wasn't awful and not nearly bad enough to make me dislike the episode, but different execution there could've taken the finale another step up.

I'm not spoiler-tagging anything because, let's be real here, anyone who isn't caught up shouldn't be reading a thread discussing the show.

Yeah, I found it disappointing too. The conclusion with the lawnmower man in Carcosa was pretty awesome, but I just hated how they answered almost no question about the nature of the cult itself. Who were these people?

It kind of reminded me of Lost in that the show raised a shitload of questions and then answered almost none of them. I hate when shows do that, and this show particularly has no excuse because it was only ever planned to be an eight episode arc, meaning everything should have been planned out from the start and most, if not all, of the big questions should have been answered.

I will say I didn't mind the Tuttles getting away with it. That felt very real to life, where the bad guys often get to walk because they're the ones in power. I just didn't like that we found out almost nothing about the cult and Carcosa and why it seemed to be driving all of these people, even ones who weren't raped, batshit insane.

Through a macro lens, yea, I was disappointed. I wish they would have delved into the cult more. And I thought the timing of Rust's visions coming when the did seemed a bit hokey.

Through a micro lens, it was really, really good. The entire show was about 2 men and their place in a static state, not accepting change. In the end, while things around their world remained the same (Tuttle family covering up the connection & getting away w the crimes, the world being a scary place, etc) Rust & Marty - 2 guys who were the pure definition of static - changed completely.

Not a chance - they are. It may not even be about Serial killers at all. Hell, it may not even involve cops.

When I compared it to AHS I was talking about bringing back actors to play different characters, not the different story aspect. I already knew next season would almost definitely be a totally different story. This is an anthology series, after all.
