The "What are you playing now?" Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Why?

Why shouldn't an employer fire someone who says what they feel to be commonly-believed socially reprehensible things? At what point does one's reactionary stance against political correctness start to cover for things that really have nothing to do with political correctness, like outright racism or homophobia? Roseanne is a good example of this; Kevin Hart is another example.

What if Kevin Hart made those tweets last month instead of 10 years ago (or whenever)? Should the Academy still fire him from hosting the Oscars once they are made aware of it?
I said I didn’t like it. I didn’t say they can’t do waheywbe they please. They are free to do what they like just as I’m free to criticize their decision.

Just.. to nail this down.. since we're talking about personal beliefs at this point; if you ran a game development studio, and you were working on a make or break project; would you fire someone if they were on social media and were associated with neo-Nazi groups and making crazy, neo-Nazi remarks, even though while they were at work they were fine - quietly just doing their job?

In the race to beat Steam, the Discord Store just made a huge move

Austen Goslin@AustenG
2-3 minutes

Discord, one of the most popular voice chat and community platforms for PC gaming, only started selling games in August. The company announced Friday that it will double down on its role as a marketplace in 2019 by allowing developers of all sizes to self-publish games — while offering an aggressive 90/10 revenue split, which will give more money to developers than most other game distribution platforms currently do.

According to the company’s announcement of this new initiative, it all started with a question, “Why does it cost 30% to distribute games?” After a bit of research, Discord decided that there was no reason the process should cost that much. “Turns out, it does not cost 30% to distribute games in 2018. [...] We discovered that we can build amazing developer tools, run them and give developers the majority of the revenue share.”

This announcement comes at a time when the landscape of publishing games on PC is rapidly shifting. Valve’s Steam platform has been the major player in the market for over a decade, but publishers who felt they deserved a larger split of their games’ sales than the 70 percent offered by Valve began to create their own distribution platforms over the past few years. With the recent announcement of the new Epic Games store, which offers developers 88 percent of revenue, it appears that things are shifting toward offering larger margins to game makers — keeping developers’ best interests at the heart of the platforms.

While some of gaming’s largest companies, such as Blizzard and Bethesda, have created their own distribution platforms with infrastructures built in for things like security, downloading and patching games, it may be easier for smaller developers to continue to go through other platforms. According to Discord, the company hopes that the new split will favor these developers and help them get back to “focusing on what’s really important — making great games and cultivating amazing communities.”

Just saw that Ubisoft will be giving everyone who participates in Project Stream and plays for at least an hour a free copy of Odyssey once the Stream beta is over in a month. Apparently save files will now transfer over as well.

I got to play Odyssey for free and they are rewarding me by giving me a free permanent copy of it. Awesome.

Anybody here play League of Legends?

Blizzard just basically killed my favorite game of all time (Heroes of the Storm), so looking to move to League I think once HotS finally dies in the future.

@TyGuy

If you guys want to discuss this, please take it to the politics forum so the rest of us don't have to read where this inevitably will go.

That PR ridden message to the fans was awful. Blizzard is going down the shitter and fast. WoW is a clusterfuck, Hots on life support and the Diablo fiasco...

Never tried LoL. Really dont think I’d take to it like I did Hots.

I've played maybe 20 games of LoL sporadically here and there and generally enjoyed it. Have watched some LCS and enjoyed that too. Especially since 100 Thieves is basically the Cavs, so I had a hometown rooting interest.

HotS is for sure my favorite game, but there's no mistaking the tone in that PR BS message. Gonna play til they pull the plug, but gotta plan for the future.

And I wholeheartedly agree with you on Blizzard's, err, Activision's direction. Going off the deep end, and fast.

P.S. Honestly, I owe a thanks to you @Chris for getting me into the game. I literally was just trying it for the Hearthstone card back and you invited me to play with your friends like 3 or 4 years ago or whatever it was. Became my favorite game. About 5000 matches played.

RIP :(

My lifelong affection for WoW is the only thing keeping me supporting Blizzard. As a company, they objectively suck.

I still am loving the new WoW expansion though, so that isn't going anywhere for me. Friends and I play LoL on and off, and it's also a very enjoyable game as long as you can stomach the constant, total toxicity of the community in game. I made gold in the spring while I was taking a WoW break, which was insignificant albeit fun to hit a personal goal. Strictly the occasional casual game since.

LCS, however, is still the best esport to date IMO. Love following that scene. Riot has really nailed it by self-producing LCS the way they have from the beginning.

Am I the only one that wants CD Project Red to utilize a side studio to remaster/remake Witcher 1 and 2 to come up to the quality of Witcher 3?

I have never played 1 and 2 and I feel like I am missing out. Just use the same engine as Witcher 3 to make it as painless as possible. I don't even care if they have the same mechanics...just give me a new story to experience.

People have differing opinions, but I still very much enjoy Hearthstone. (Last two expansions have been great, IMO).

I also float in and out of Overwatch.

But this HotS move has made me very wary, and I'm gonna have my guard up on both of those games from here on out so I don't feel the crushing disappointment of what they did to HotS.

LCS the best Esport? I respectfully disagree. It's not even the best MOBA to watch, Dota2 is way more exciting from start to finish. Your average LCS game offers what, 2 team fights at the most? Total snooze fest.

As far as playing MOBA's. I was sad to hear about HOTS. I enjoyed the change of pace this provided quite a bit. I played LoL a ton from 2010-2012 but got burnt out by how terrible they are at managing their own meta. Release a new hero every few months, extremely overpowered so everyone pays money for it, then nerf it into the ground. Rinse and repeat. If I was going to pick up a MOBA again it would definitely be Dota2. I just doubt I will ever play another MOBA again.

CS will always be the best spectator Esport. Easy to understand, violent, great strategy and they bring the best crowds. This was just a few days ago.

I might get back into CS.

Prolly will continue to play HOTS, I’m sure it’ll be around for awhile. Cancelled my WoW though. New expansion was cool at first but after a few months... it’s not good.

They'd basically have to re-write and re-do the audio for the first two games as well, because the writing took a huge positive jump from game two to game three. It wasn't bad in two, but it definitely felt like a game that was translated from another language, as a lot of writing seemed a little stilted and awkward.

They completely fixed that problem in the third game, which has incredible writing. But if you go back and play the first two it'll probably be a little jarring.

I play WoW with a (now former) HotS pro, so we had a really good idea it was coming a bit earlier than everyone else when he started telling us that Blizzard had been radio silent literally since Blizzcon. They never put out a final date for roster changes in HGC or anything, so it was clear that it was up in the air, and as time went by, that it was probably getting canceled.

I never got into HGC like I do LCS and I never reallllly dedicated myself to playing HotS, so I don't feel it, but I can tell you it's always had a microscopic playerbase and following compared to Hearthstone and WoW, so I wouldn't worry if I were you.
