This Cavs Starting Five

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This is the worst team we will have, given Love returns.

Next year the MLE, Andy coming back, and the Haywood contract will effectively net us 3 or 4 useful players.

No more James Jones, or small ball line ups (with any luck).

I think it's important to get a back up SF with the Haywood contract, unless JR leaves.

A Wilson Chandler, or Aminu (no way he signs for MLE though) would go a long way to improving this team. What do we think the chances Charlotte rids themselves of Stephenson, and would be willing to part with MKG to do so?

Then it's a matter of finding a third team for Lance, and hopefully netting us a PG in return. Anyways not a trade thread, but I fully believe the team next year will break the Cavs record for wins, and keep LeBron around 30 minutes.

I find it hilarious you think Aminu won't sign for an MLE deal..

The dude is on a vet min contract right now. A few good games off the bench does not make an MLE contract unless someone is an idiot and overpays.

So you agree then? There is no shortage of stupid in the NBA.

If they choose not to address wing in the draft, or backup PG in free agency, I would really love to see if they could get Gerald Green to jump at the mid-level. Can guard 2-4, adds more athleticism and length, and is a career 36% shooter from 3.

Also, if he doesn't retire, James Jones will be back next year on the vet minimum again. He's certainly given us a lot more than any of our other vet signings, and he'll be able to play spot stretch 4 minutes if need be as the team gets deeper.

Ideally Marion, Perkins, and Haywood are gone, and unfortunately JR Smith is potentially gone too. Other than that, I'd expect everyone else back. If Haywood is traded for a player, and with our 1st round pick, as long as we keep it, that will give us 1 or 2 open roster spots to play with in free agency. Not going to be an eventful free agency period this year.

Would not mind rolling into next year looking like this, if JR picks up his player option:

PG: Kyrie, Delly, vet FA
SG: Smith, Shumpert, Harris, Miller
SF: LeBron, Green
PF: Love, Tristan, Jones
C: Mozgov, Andy, 1st round pick

That team can go 10-12 deep, compared to the 8-9 man rotation we're seeing.

I doubt he gets anything more than another vet minimum contract. He's just not that good.
He's not that bad either. He's not James Jones, or Shawn Marion. He will never be a starter, but it's not like he can't play.

@BimboColesHair , I don't see JR opting out. He doesn't have an injury history, and if he waits a season, his contract will be worth millions more, especially if he plays as he has been.

I think the cap explosion completely changes the way players will look at FA this year. We're talking about 10 or more million extra for waiting a year.

In JR's situation, he seems to really like it here, and for the first time that I know of, nobody is calling him selfish, a bonehead, a chucker, etc. It has to be a good feeling I would think.

Getting Gerald Green would be a ridiculous upgrade, I just don't see how he accepts the mid level to come here. He would be able to swing a much better deal elsewhere and it's not like he's getting to a point in his career where you'd expect him to ring chasing.

He's going to be 30 next year, has been to the playoffs only twice in his career, and has never made more than 3.5 million a year...he's at that point. This will most likely be his last multi-year contract. The full MLE starts at 5 million. He would 100% accept that, if the interest is mutual.

Wow, I did not realize he was that old.... Still, there would have to be offers from other teams that would trump ours, wouldn't there? Can't imagine that he'd take only 5 mil, considering he's coming off probably the two best seasons of his career. I would love it if we could swing either him or Iggy, who someone on here I can't remember showed a pretty interesting trade scenario for, but the question is wether we get them. I would be absolutely thrilled with either that's for sure.

No one is going to offer Gerald Green more than the full MLE, not if he wants to go somewhere to win. And he came off his best stretch of play in the NBA in 11-12 and signed his current deal at 3.5 million a year. He's not getting more than the full MLE.

Not sure why some people are telling OP to slow his role. This Cavs starting 5 is by far the best one ever. Not only do we have LeBron in his prime, but we finally have been able to surround him with competent teammates. This Cavs team beats any Cleveland Cavalier roster in a 7 game series. I know people love the 09 team, but they were always smoke and mirrors. This team has gamers. Kyrie alone is comically better than anyone LeBron played with pre-2010

Won't be possible after Love and JR Smith leave.

Doubt Love will, but yeah, leaving JR starting is pricing him out of our range for next year. Oh well, at least we should still be able to afford Shumpy-Shump so he can start, which is what makes more sense now anyway. But it appears Blatt doesn't want to upset the apple cart.

It's too bad they don't give a trophy for best starting five.
Who said they should? The OP asked a question and than he gave his opinion. Which other starting 5 in Cavs history is beating this current team? This current team has LeBron witj championship experience, two all-stars in their prime, a 6th man of the year, and a center that fits like a glove.

I don't think we will push the Bulls record just because of how much LeBron values rest. I think we will take the Indy Colts approach in the Dungy years: after we clinch everything we need take some rest. And if we were pushing the record we would most likely clinch first seed with quite a few games to go. Not that LeBron would sit out for a whole month, but I would expect him to take quite a few of those games off. He already came out this year and said he doesn't care about seeding, just get him into the playoffs. So I would imagine he cares even less about that record and a 31 year old LeBron (next year) would rather be well rested for the playoffs.
