Tracking the Cavs' Metrics Through the Playoffs

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So Iso ball is smart when Blatt does it, but Mike Brown was an idiot that only played iso ball?

We converted and created well in iso during Brown's tenure because Lebron opens up a lot of options out of it when the defense converges on him.

I still want to see more movement as we go through the playoffs because we will need it to win a championship. Iso will not be able to get you through everyone as we have witnessed many times.

How relevant are any of these metrics in a playoff series where there is no variance in opponent? It seems that a teams successes or struggles against any single team would have extremely little effect on a game against another opponent.

These types of stats tell a much more important story when a bigger sample of opponents are used.

Someone on this forum told me that assists in Euroleague are calculated differently. Does anyone know what's the difference?

In the Euroleague an assist leading to free throws is also counted as an assist.

but if you take more than one dribble it most likely wont be counted as an assist

Yes, this is true. However, the biggest issue when Lebron was first in Cleveland was that he was the only one who could create his own shot. That meant that if lebron got slowed down on offense everything came to a screeching halt.

So yes, when you have two players who are elite at getting to the hoop, then naturally you'll have a higher iso rate. It's no different then GSW shooting a bunch of 3's or Memphis having a higher percentage of post-ups.

Iso was awful with Mike Brown because when Lebron got stopped the rest of the offense went completely stagnant.

Why would it be considered assist in the NBA??
In the nba it's more based on a pass that directly leads to a score. If you catch a guy on a cut or a fast break and he scores, it's an assist even if he isn't directly taking shot on the catch

Correct, any dribble negates the assist.

That's not true - from NBA.com

An assist is a pass that directly leads to a basket. This can be a pass to the low post that leads to a direct score, a long pass for a layup, a fast break pass to a teammate for a layup, and/or a pass that results in an open perimeter shot for a teammate. In basketball, an assist is awarded only if, in the judgement of the statistician, the last player's pass contributed directly to a made basket. An assist can be awarded for a basket scored after the ball has been dribbled if the player's pass led to the field goal being made.

If that's the case you can't compare at all. I'm not even sure you can compare two NBA games, since the NBA definition is so subjective

You can compare if you take into account the whole thing. Like where did Maccabi place on the assists list in its own league.
Last year, they were one of the leaders in that stat (4th). A season before that, they were somewhere in the middle (9th).
Blatt's offenses vary depending on his players. He usually has a system he works with on D, but on offense it completely depends on who are his players.

Listen to Kyrie's last interview on cavs.com, listen to what he says about Blatt's system.

Alright, so after one round, we have a decent sample size and we know our round 2 opponent, so I updated the charts.

Here is my instant analysis, for whatever it's worth.

Cavs and Bulls both seemed to play really nice first rounds. Both are nearly equal in Net Rtg and Def Rtg.

However, I think there is a pretty strong caveat that post all star break, Boston was a much better and faster offensive team (gaining almost 2 more possessions and scoring 5.5 more points per 100 poss than MIL). So to me, the Cavs achieved something much greater in the Bulls by getting the same result from a tougher train to stop.

The Cavs scored at a 106.5 Off Rtg clip vs. the Bulls since Jan 15, which would still be 5th best in the playoffs, just shy of the Rockets and our own mark vs. the C's.

One area of concern is that the Bulls are whipping the ball around, and we are not doing so at all. However, this might be a scenario where being without Love might help us a bit as the defenders we have in when we go small should be quick enough to make crisp rotations.

We are also gonna need to pick up our 3pt shooting as well.
