I can't get over the Cards giving up Kaminsky, a former first-round pick who has performed very well throughout his pro career to date, with no loss of projection. He's a command left-hander who'll sit mostly average with his fastball but will show a plus curveball and has great deception in his delivery; prep hitters who faced him on the showcase circuit said he was harder to square up than other pitchers throwing much harder but who showed the ball early. He's been an extreme groundball guy this year, with 64 percent of his balls in play on the ground according to MLBfarm.com, and only 12 percent characterized as line drives (note that the coding of balls in play, especially those in the air, isn't 100 percent reliable). Scouts don't love the lack of velocity or projection, as Kaminsky is 5-foot-11 and already filled out, but this is a formula that can work even if he ends up at 89-90 mph because he has command and control, a swing-and-miss breaking ball, and the ability to put the ball on the ground.
