Cavs training camp won't play a role in the construction of the Cleveland team, but it will have a larger role for Canton that previous years. Here's the rule change--

http://www.si.com/nba/2015/07/22/nba-training-camp-d-league-cuts-roster-rights

NBA teams can now waive four training camp invitees (up from three) and make those individuals “affiliate players,” providing the player signs a D-League contract. The two sides typically discuss a potential D-League allocation while negotiating training camp contracts as well.

A lot of money and time is spent on the D Leaue and how much talent is really crossing over? I'd rather every team just be allotted 5 developmental slots and they simply train together when teams meet in the regular season. And if injury happens your allowed to call a guy up and use him on the main roster.

Now you would need great trainers becaus they wouldn't be seeing game time but having a whole league is not even worth it. When's the last time a d leaguer was called up and really changed a team?

As we enter another NBA D-League Showcase it got me thinking about the best NBA D-League success stories of all time

They have come from all different backgrounds, different points at ones career, different positions and different styles.

The NBA D-League is full of budding professionals in the NBA with all kinds of personalities and experiences playing professional basketball. The Showcase is a great opportunity to shine in front of a number of NBA personnel and exhibit what they are all about in a neat setting.

Some of these guys listed below were members of Showcase past and certainly benefited from the opportunity.

Here are my favorite Top 5 NBA D-League success stories in no particular order.

Gerald-Green.jpg

1. Gerald Green – I remember talking with Gerald at the All Star Game the year he won the Dunk Contest and he had all the potential in the world. Athleticism out the roof. But for numerous reasons, he slipped from the ranks of the NBA. His rise back to a multi-year NBA contract with the Phoenix Suns went through the NBA D-League. He grew as a person and a player and was able to parlay a tremendous tenure with the LA Defenders into solid minutes in the NBA.

2. Danny Green – This World Champion saw his journey go through the NBA D-League as well. Three different NBA D-League teams from the Reno Bighorns to the Erie Bayhawks to the Austin Torros, Green saw himself logging minutes for all of them. Eventually he found his way to the rotation with the San Antonio Spurs and has locked in that spot ever since, being a key component of their success.

3. Donald Sloan – Sloan has been called the “best player he has ever coached” by NBA D-League Supernova and current Westchester Kinicks Director of Basketball Operations Joel Abelson. I have had the privilege of interviewing Sloan multiple times over the years on my show Overtime and he has always impressed me with his knowledge of the game. Sloan now has found a place currently with the Indiana Pacers often starting early in the 2014-2015 season.

4. Jeremy Lin – Lin-sanity… Yes, even I caught the bug. Even though Lin has never revived the magic he created in NYC for that short time period in his emergence into the NBA. Once a Reno Bighorn, Lin has now played for the Knicks, Rockets and currently the Los Angeles Lakers. Lin-sanity has not been re-created, but Lin does quite nicely after a nice payday two years back. No more sleeping on a couch…

5. Hassan Whiteside – I know its under 25 games into this latest stint in the NBA for Whiteside as this article is written, so please take that into the mix if you are reading this in 2017 and Whiteside is in Turkey getting technicals while living in conditions not suited for a man of that size. I digress, but his play has only progressed. He is averaging a double double with the Miami Heat and continues to show determination, something many thought he lacked early in his career. He has played for the Sioux Falls Skyforce among other D-League franchises. We’ll see if the Whiteside tour continues to come to a NBA city near you.

Teams are allowed to carry a maximum of 20 players on their roster from July till October 26. That is the date for regular season rosters to be submitted. For many teams, it will mean open competition for roster spots and for others it will be to load up on their D-League squad.

The D-League training camp will allow players who do not make the NBA in October to have a safety net. Teams with “one-to-one” affiliates can assign up to four players that were waived in training camp to their own D-League club.

....

The common misconception is that players who sign non-guaranteed contracts to participate in training camp will receive a salary. They don’t. Like summer league, players will receive roughly $127 in per diem, hotel and all travel expenses to take part. The one added bonus is that players are eligible to receive $2,000 in camp compensation per week for roughly four weeks. However, if you make the team, then your training camp compensation gets deducted from your first check on November 15.

Another added wrinkle for training camp invites is that teams have the right to insert an exhibit into the player’s contract protecting the team if a player is injured. A team must have at least 14 players under contract to be able to do this. If the exhibit is added, teams will only be liable up to $6,000 if a player is injured. Before 2011, teams were fully liable for the player’s salary until he recovered from his injury.

....

Veterans with four or more years of service are at a clear disadvantage when it comes to preparing for training camp. The current rules state that only rookies and minimum players with three years or less in the league can be reimbursed for travel, meals and lodging for the four weeks leading up to camp.

...

Ask many players what are the three dates circled on their calendar and they will tell you: October 24, October 26 and January 8. If a player isn’t waived by October 24 at 5 pm then he is guaranteed at least one day’s pay. October 26 signals the day when each team has to set its regular season roster. January 8 at 5 pm is the biggest day in the career of a non-guaranteed player. Once you make it past 5:01 pm, your salary becomes guaranteed for the remainder of the season.

Chris Reichert, who is apparently a D League reporter, is reporting the Cavs have signed Jerrelle Benimon, who played for them during the summer league, to a training camp contract.

Reichert tweeted this yesterday, and has been picked up by various sources, but I don't see any independent verification.

If true, this is a nice TC signing, in my opinion. Benimon is a skilled PF who has consistently been productive in the D League (one year) and two years at Towson (NCAA). Played on a ten day contract with the Jazz. He's in that category of fringe NBA players. Probably has little chance at actually making the roster.

David Griffin normally likes size, especially in the front court, so it's interesting that he signed an undersized PF, even for a TC invite. That is, if it's true.

Benimon fine in the summer league, I dont think he makes the team but he has a nose for the ball and and made smart plays at both ends *insert other generally vague and stereotypical TC invitee comments*

Nice...too often we bring in some boring players who eventually get cut, at least Stephens and his ridiculous athleticism will be fun to watch before he gets cut.

Ha! Yeah, I was sort of surprised by this news. Hyper athletic, low skilled guy who can't shoot doesn't strike me as the sort of player Griffin tends to favor. But there are lots of reasons certain players get a training camp invite/deal.
