Tressel knew of gear scheme last April

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Based on the report given yesterday.....it would appear they're looking to vacate last season.

With no more affect on the future (scholarships, postseason bans, ect)

I'd imagine OSU would be happy with that, as long as it doesnt affect the future.

Also.....what sort of message does it send if the NCAA crushes a program which SELF-REPORTED violations?

Just gives the Auburn's and Oregon's of the world more cause to sweep stuff like this under the rug...

My guess is that if the NCAA deems OSU's punishments for Tressel to be insufficient, which I believe they will, postseason bans could be levied against the program for not taking what happened seriously enough. The same could also be said if they decide to consider them repeat offenders. I think the NCAA will look more at the original punishment OSU issued (2 games and $250k) as an indication that they didn't take what happened seriously. In addition, it wasn't even OSU that extended the suspension, and the suspension was only extended AFTER the appeal of the player suspensions was denied.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't USC ultimately receive a postseason ban and reduced scholarships because an assistant coach lied about knowing that Reggie Bush and his family took money? In other words committing the same violation that Tressel did?

I don't know how so many people can continually try to separate what Tressel did from the OSU football program. The head coach is a direct extension of the football program. Ultimately, he is responsible for what goes on both on and off the field, no matter if you like it or not. He is the head of the organization, and apparently according to Gee, holds the top position at the university. OSU would probably be able to avoid scholarship reductions and any type of post season ban if they were to get rid of Tressel, but keeping him as the coach is essentially sending a message to the NCAA that they don't think what he did was a very big deal.

The main issue here is that Tressel was sweeping it under the rug. And that is what should be punished. The self reporting came later, when *allegedly* the President got wind of it while putting paperwork together for the players appeal. Your right that the University should not be bent over backwards for self reporting. Which is why the NCAA should negotiate behind the scenes to have Tressel fired for a lesser punishment. But, if Tressel stays, the school will suffer from the punishment the Coach gets.

The Columbus Dispatch

Key dates in the story:

April 2, 2010: Columbus attorney Christopher Cicero sends football coach Jim Tressel an email alerting him to possible NCAA violations involving quarterback Terrelle Pryor and another player.

Tressel calls Pryor's mentor, Ted Sarniak, of Jeannette, Pa.

April 3, 2010: Tressel forwards Cicero's email to Sarniak.

April 19, 2010: Tressel sends Cicero an email asking him for the names of all the players involved. He writes that he "has a plan."

Sept. 13, 2010: Tressel signs a document stating that he is not aware of any NCAA violations involving his players.

Dec. 7, 2010: The U.S. Department of Justice sends Ohio State officials a letter indicating that Buckeye memorabilia had been seized during a raid on a Columbus tattoo parlor. Ohio State launches an internal investigation.

Dec. 16, 2010: Tressel tells Ohio State compliance officials he received a tip about "general rumors" concerning the off-the-field behavior of some players, but he can't recall who told him that.

Dec. 23, 2010: The university announces that five players, including Pryor, will be suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season for trading memorabilia for discounted tattoos. In a controversial decision, the NCAA allows them to play in the Sugar Bowl.

Jan. 4: The Buckeyes defeat Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl, and Pryor is named the game's MVP.

Jan. 13: Ohio State compliance officials discover the April emails between Tressel and Cicero.

Feb. 8: Tressel tells NCAA investigators that he did not come forward in April because he thought there were extenuating circumstances that outweighed his obligation to notify university officials of violations. Specifically, he said, he was worried about the players' safety and the sanctity of the criminal investigation.

March 8: Ohio State announces that Tressel has broken NCAA rules on ethical behavior and suspends him for the first two games of the 2011 season.

March 17: Tressel announces that he has increased his suspension to five games, to match the punishment the players received.

Friday: Ohio State receives a "notice of allegations" from the NCAA. It notes that the university will be treated as a repeat offender, which has meant stiffer penalties for violators.

This is an extreme example, but that's like saying that someone who turns themselves in for murder should get less of a sentence than someone who gets caught by the police. In the end, they both committed the same crime.

Actually if you turn yourself in, You do usually get an easier penalty. For example, typically you can get them to take the death penalty off the table for turning yourself in. But when did OSU turn themselves in? If that email was not made public, Tressel would have never turned himself in, thats the problem

The message is that a University shouldn't protect a coach that lies, cheats and attempts to cover-up violations. If OSU had fired him or forced him to resign, we'd be moving on by now without getting crushed. The way OSU has handled this has been a total clusterfuck.

This dumbass comment gives the impression that the organization is 1) not taking it seriously and 2) Tressel is in control....both bad messeges to send the NCAA. The way they have completely botched the handling of this serious situation over the last 12 months has opened the door for a crushing.

When asked if he considered firing Football Coach Jim Tressel in the wake of the Tattoo-gate cover up scandal, Gee responded rather flippantly.
“No,” Gee said. “Are you kidding me? … I’m just hoping the coach doesn’t dismiss me.”

Also.....what sort of message does it send if the NCAA crushes a program which SELF-REPORTED violations?

Because the coach that lied about the violations in the first place is still employed by the program.

Sticking with Tressel when this was going down will ultimately be the biggest mistake tOSU has ever made.

No, OSU told the NCAA a month before Yahoo "broke" the story.

Not even close to enough. If he stays as coach he will be suspended for a full year by the NCAA, fined even more, lose 2010, and a bowl in 2011 maybe 2012 and lose scholarships. Fire him, and the NCAA will be much kinder on the program.

What I really dotn get as a non OSU fan is why everyone thinks Tressel is so hard to replace
. He is a good coach, but OSU will remain a top 5 job in the country. Number one in alumni support, Best program in the Big Ten not only a premier conference, but the biggest revenue generating conference. OSU is the main school in a top 5 recruiting state. Yes cincy is in a BCS conference too, but everyone knows that for Ohio kids its OSU first and then Cincy. Only other school in a top 5 state that enjoys such a monopoly is Penn State (sorry Pitt)

My point for the Tressel supporters is dont get your panties in a bunch. This is far worse of a violation that your are admitting to yourself, but divorcing yourself from Tressel wouldnt be that bad. You guys will rebound back very well. Maybe even pickup someone like Urban Meyer.

Because up until this point, he's done everything the right way. He doesnt oversign players. He doesnt get the program in trouble then bolt for the NFL. He doesnt engage in problematic behavior on the sideline or in his personal life. He is gracious with the media. He devotes time to visit soldiers fighting overseas.

Basically, up until this point, he has been the best ambassador OSU could possibly have. As bad as this is, it isnt as bad as what goes on other places, and it doesnt outweigh all the good hes done. Crucifying him for this would be a slap in the face to a man who has does great stuff for his university. HE DESERVES the backing of OSU, the fans, and the alumni, to help him through this.

Yahoo has nothing to do wtih Tressel not turning himself in until he got caught.

Lee was implying OSU turned themselves in because the e-mails were made public. That is not true.

Sorry, but he made this shitbed. You keep on saying he only made one mistake and I think that's bullshit. We DESERVED better judgement from him and we are now screwed because he made MULTIPLE mistakes. He lied to the school, he lied to the NCAA, he lied during press conferences. For nearly a year he continued to coverup and make this go away.

On April 2nd he shouldve walked from his desk straight to the compliance dept and said "we have a problem".
On April 2nd & 3rd he should NOT have called Ted Sarniak or forwarded him the emails
On April 19th he should not have emailed Cicero and announced he "has a plan" to cover the thing up
On Sept 13th he ABSOLUTELY should have informed the NCAA that there were potential violations involving his players.
On Dec 16th he should have told the truth and not lied to school officials when confronted by them.
On Dec 23rd announcing the player suspensions, he should not have played dumb like he had no prior knowledge.
On Feb. 8 he should have not told lie after lie about why he didnt come forward to investigators.
On Mar 8th he should not have participated in that farce of a press conference continuing and compounding all the lies.

Tress said this on Dec 23rd when talking about how disappointed he was in the 5 players and acting like he had just found about it - "I think we all have a little sensor within us, ‘Well, I’m not sure if I should be doing this'".
It's a damn shame that his sensor has been broken for most of the last year. He covered up, he lied, he attempted to deceive, he compounded all his lies over and over.

HE deserves backing? How about what the fans, alumni, students and players DESERVE from him at this point?

He should man-up and say --- "I've done enough damage. It is in the best interest of this great university, this great program and the players I love so much that I step down at this point. I am the one that deserves to be punished, the University has already been punished enough from my actions. I am truly sorry for the many mistakes I have made over the past year. I am sorry for the embarrassment I've caused this great program."

I dont think him resigning is in the best interest of the program.
