Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I really would only sign Tristan for a deal like Taj Gibson got and have him being our 3rd big... I think Bennett starts at the 4 long-term and I really like Zeller as well....still need an enforcer though

Tristan doesn't have the perimeter game to play small forward. As we learned with Alonzo Gee you can't have a small forward that poses no threat to a defense.

TT can guard most small forwards in the NBA, ones with elite quickness (George, LeBron) would eat him alive out there though.

Perhaps I am remembering incorrectly but I thought last season Tristan was guarding LeBron during one of our games and was doing a damn good job of it.

If I have to watch Tristan Thompson play the 3 for the Cavs I will rip my eyes from my head and eat them. Then blindly rush the court at the Q and tell them I won't leave until they fire Mike Brown.

Imagine if we had like 500+ RCFers do this all at once :chuckles:

The position you play on offense can be different than the one you defend on defense.

This is a crazy thought... Why not try him at a later point at Small Forward? He's at least got the size and length there but would be forced to adjust him game a lot. He would need either a lot of shooters or at least get a mid ranger of his own. Kinda like Josh Smith?

Again, I have no idea how it helps, but the power forwards in today's game have too much length and shooting over the top. So put him on a shorter guy instead?

Just an innocent opinion...

Wow, I think that is a pretty big fantasy at best. I am going to go on record and say TT will never be a quality SF in the NBA.
Lets just tell it is like it is. He is a slightly above average undersized NBA power forward at best. Nothing more, nothing less. A nice role player, but never a stud. Not someone who ever want to rely on offense, but he can still help you in games and can be productive as long as you dont ask him to do much. Ideal as a 3rd big off the bench, on a very talented team. He is not worth a huge contract that makes him the third or second highest player on team in any version of the NBA. If he is your second best player you are frankly going nowhere. He needs to be your 4th/5th or even 6th best player on a contender. (and that is assuming he continues to develop his jumper so it at least respectful)

True but that would mean you would need very good shooters at the 4 and 5 if Thomspon is played at the 3 on defense. Bennett at the 4 and then Marc Gasol at the 5? The list of centers with good jumpshots is not long. Cross-switching on defense is also very hard to do when when you have a guy who plays the 3 on defense and like a 5 on offense. That person has to go from trying to get an offensive board to chasing a guy down who was likely was on the wing already.
The saying it's who you can defend defines your position is usually used in conjunction with talented offensive players who are having trouble finding a position that they can guard consistently (i.e. a Beasley type)

Can we please stop talking about Tristan at the 3? He's much more of a 5 than a 3.

Just take the fact that he can check some 3s as an indication that he has the potential to be a very disruptive defender and PnR stopper (and he's already fairly good here).

You mean good shooters like Bennett and Zeller? :chuckles:

Seriously, though, I wasn't advocating Tristan playing the three. I was just indicating that he can (and has) played it defensively for stretches. It's really a question of match-ups. You might be able to get away with a Zeller/Thompson/Bennett big rotation, but the guy at the three on the other team has to be someone either Thompson or Bennett could guard, and of course that line-up could be a disaster offensively since none of those guys really has any practice at the three.

A more likely scenario would be, pending match-ups, Tristan swapping to the three on defense and our small forward (whoever it is) sliding to the four if the guy there isn't much of an offensive threat.

Fuck it. Let's give Tristan some burn at PG.

All jokes aside though, it really does suck that he isn't 2 or 3 inches taller. He has much more of a centers skill set. And then we could start AB and develop and have Andy back as that great first big off the bench. In a perfect world...

"Hey Tristan, we don't want to pay to re-sign Deng, so any chance you could, like, become Luol Deng over the course of the next several months?"

Who cares whether or not LeBron comes back? We've got Tristan Thompson!

I made a 3 with Tristan in 2k the other day. This Tristan to SF thing is meant to be.
