Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Wow what an awful contract. Griffin has not exactly shown to be a very good contract negotiator so far. Gave Varajao way too much, now has turned around and given the 6th man 80 million. This becomes another untradeable contract.
So you haven't read anything about the new CBA have you?

Amir Johnson just got a 2 year 24 million deal. Tristan is worth way more than Johnson. Hell look at what Dragic, and Carrol got. This isn't a this year deal, it's for next year, when these same players are worth 25% more than now.

Surely you jest? With the cap where its going, there is no such thing as an untraceable deal and certainly not with a reliable young player like Tristan.

Also, Vareajo for 2 years at 20 or Amir Johnson at 2 years 24? Andy is not such a bad contract now.

More importantly, if needed down the road, these are all traceable parts vs. letting any of them walk for nothing.

This is not the financial NBA of 2005-2013. Read up on the new TV deal, on how the CBA works, and look around at the financial landscape.

Tristans deal is not cheap but in no means is an albatross

I don't really care. Sure, he's a massive overpay.

But the guy is 24 years old, and we have no plans, at all, to trading him while LeBron is here. (which hopefully is the rest of his career).

So what, it's Gilbert's money. No one should be mad, given you don't have to write the checks.

At the end of the day, LeBron wants him back, that's obvious. LB and his boy Rich Paul are going to want to take care of Tristan.

I don't see this as a loss at all. It keeps Rich Paul happy, Tristan, and most importantly, LeBron happy.

Win-win-win.

Tristan is productive, and has been healthy his entire career. He's definitely worth having back, even at an outrageous price.

Why are people talking about where the cap is going? Who gives a fuck. An overpay is an overpay. TT is not worth that kind of money to get offensive rebounds. He's not a max guy!

His contract likely starts at 14 million per year.

2016-17, the first year of his extension, is a projected cap of $108 million.

On a percentage basis, that's 12.9% of the cap. That's equal to a 9 million dollar a year deal by today's cap standards ($69 million).

Think percentages, not raw numbers moving forward.

Edit: 108 million cap will be 2017-18....but the point still stands. Even in 2016-17, the projected 90 million cap still keeps TT's number at 16% of the cap....which is still fine from a percentage basis. That is equal to an 11 million per year deal on a $69 million dollar cap.

I'm cool with TT getting a bit more than he is worth if we can retain all our guys and use the Haywood contract. Hell I'd even be willing to throw JR under the bus. But if it means we lose Delly or Shump or can't utilize the Haywood contract or MLE then I would really question the overpay. Once Love signed, it seems like our leverage with Tristan really went up too.

We're setting some bad precedents though. Is TT really that much more valuable than Shump? Will Shump expect this sort of huge salary? What about Mozgov? The structure of having essentially every starter earning near max money seems flawed. If you have a Big 3, seems like you'd need a ton of value players to make it work. Now we basically have a payroll with a big 4 even though it's only a big 3 in terms of talent.

I don't know, as I've said before the sin is NEVER overpaying young players,

The sin is overpaying guys who, in years 4 and 5 of their contracts are going to be dead weight.

As the cap increases and dramatically, guys like TT, Love, Shump, etc. can be traded easily.

What the Cavs need to avoid is a Joe Johnson type deal where you're paying a declining player nearly 40% of the cap.

Thank you. I appreciate your breakdown.

I just can't fathom how TT is worth 80 million bucks. I love him as a fan favorite, but I see him as a poor mans Andy. This deal is just a head scratch-er.

Draymond Green, Warriors break off contract talks

If there it's a silver lining to the Tristan contract, it is this. Green is actually a factor on offense. Maybe the goal of Dan was to force another team into the luxury tax.

Yeah, I hear you....it's just a situation where each year the cap goes up, you're paying a guy less.

So you have to not think about what is affordable now but what is affordable on a cap near 100 million.

If the cap was not scheduled to increase some 30+ %, there's no way you could pay TT what he's going to get.

From a money perspective, it is actually advantageous for the Cavs to slightly overpay now to lock younger guys in to longer deals. It's actually a way to create trade assets down the road while still remaining a championship team. In year 5 of his deal, TT is only 29. He's really easy to move if you decide to go that route.

Lebron taking out his revenge from the letter straight on Gilbert's pockets.

That's either underselling Amir Johnson or overselling Thompson.
