Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Lol. This is how negotiations happen. Can't fault Rich Paul for looking to get the bets possible contract for his client. Can't fault our FO for looking to get him closer the contract, we feel he deserves. Like I said, people are simply overreacting and the sad part is, with LMA's decision done, the whole focus will shift to this and the drama etc. The truth is ultimately TT will sign and once we win games and TT plays well like he did in playoffs, everyone will forget about this.

I remember when Andy was an RFA and signed a sheet which gave him an early player option: the "poison pill". (2007?) If another team did this with Tristan now, we would certainly lose the current long-term contract advantage that ownership holds with the expected cap ballooning. Losing those later seasons would cost us more than would overpaying today.

This thread is insane, A few facts.

1. This is going to be an over pay for TT
2. We have no shot at being under the cap, even when it goes up
3. It is not anyone on this message boards money
4. It pays to be Lebron's friend
5. We cant replace TT in free agency because we will only have 5 mill a year after the cap goes up for the mini MLE because we will always be over the apron.

Conclusion, let management pay him if Gilbert is willing to pay stupid money in tax. Lebron wants to punish Gilbert for the letter and he is going to hit his wallet hard, this has nothing to do with the fans, let it play out and enjoy our title next year.

If TT signs for 80+ mil, we have two options next year.
1. Moz will demand similar pay
2. Moz will be frustrated that he makes much less money than TT, which will weaken our team chemistry.

The results of this negotiation will indicate which player the Cavs intend to keep for the long term: TT or Mozgov. The more that TT is paid, the more unlikely Mozgov will be on the team after next year.

Too bad we can't be more like the Spurs, where the players seem to be working with the ownership rather than trying to bleed them dry. Once we sign TT for the 80 mil deal, would any team realistically trade for him if we wanted to dump the contract?

The defense seemed to change when Mozgov arrived, and it's hard to win championships without great defense. Obviously it was more than just Mozgov but he seems to make everything work well and I think he pairs extremely well with Kevin Love. Love can focus on being in position for defensive rebounds while Mozgov patrols the paint and tries to block and contest shots.

7 foot shot blockers are I think more rare than hustle PFs who can't shoot.

I just keep coming back to what happened to the Nets. I'm sure all those contracts looked good at the time and people figured heck who cares what were paying, we got a frickin dynasty here! I realize it's not exactly the same situation but it still scares me.

Is there a way to trade TT? That might be a viable option at this point if it meant keeping Mozgov later. We could make due at PF with Love Andy and David West, that is for sure.

I don't think it has got to do with Dan either.

Remember, Rich Paul did the same with Eric Bledsoe last summer. He is a new agent who is looking to make a name for himself as a hard-nosed agent who no matter what. Obviously, having LeBron looming over as the shadow helps. But, this is more about Rich Paul v/s Dan and Griff. Because, even if we consider the possibility of TT not signing here, LeBron isn't going to leave. He ain't tarnishing his legacy for another player.

Once the new TV money kicks in TT's contract won't look so horrid.

Exactly, and in 2 seasons when it fully kicks in, we wont have any cap room even then.

They will keep both if Moz beasts like he did this season.

Players love playing with him. Love's best came once we traded Moz. LeBron loves playing with him. Coach Blatt likes him as well. Griff tried to get him since the season started itself. No way, Dan will let him walk. Especially when you consider if he leaves, we won't have any cap space to sign a player. We would be looking for scraps like Clippers are doing now.

TBH. Its not as bad as many are making it out to be.

Asik is getting around $12 Million per year. Robin Lopez is getting around $14 Million per year. So, the rumoured $16 Million for a player of TT's ilk, who is so young and has so much scope to improve is far from being a bad contract.

This is obviously an issue in terms of the team's plans going forward.

If Mozgov stays healthy and plays next year the way he did this past year, is he going to demand a max deal too, or at least Tristan type money? Even if Thompson plays more minutes and closes most games, it will be a tough argument to counter.

And if you draw the line and say no to that, as we have seen it is difficult to go out and just find a suitable replacement.

I suspect the Cavs' overriding concern is fielding the best team they can for 2015-16. I can't say I disagree with that approach.

Really, TT signing the QO might be better for us. I think his value is higher right now than it will be this time next year, assuming Love starts healthy. We'll also have a better idea of what the cap is looking like next year.

He gets better every year and the fact that he is never injured helps that. He has a ton of continuity and is getting a lot of minutes early, which is great for a Big Man's development.
