Victor Oladipo Crush-a-lot

While Oladipo has great defensive potencial, his offense is a mess. He doesn't do one thing at elite level(offensively) in college, and that means that his offensive game won't translate to the NBA.

If true, that means it wouldn't transfer immediately, but it doesn't mean that his game could not develop to the point where it does. But he's got a TS% that's tops among the players tracked by DX. How can he not be doing something at an elite level with a TS% over 70%?

In any case, I'd say his off-ball movement/slashing/ability to finish are elite. He's a blur moving to the hoop, has great hops, and finishes. What's going to determine whether he is a mid-round guy or something higher is his shooting. If he keeps shooting at a plus level, and if he continues that in workouts and shows the good form to convince folks that it is a permanent improvement, then he's in top 10 discussions. Great defense, great athleticism, and top-level TS% at a major college program will do that for you.

Double post.

I dont like Oladip with our pick, but if by some miracle we get the Laker's pick and he is still there, then i am ok. Victor is a role player, but unlike a Nerlons, I dont see him as a super star role player, so no way do i take him in the first 10 picks.

I don't think anyone else sees him as Noel either. The problem is that this is a pretty weak draft if you're looking for game-changers, particularly if we were to get unlucky and draft around 7-8 (even 10, as your said). At that point, you'd assume Noel, Zeller, Len, Muhammed, Porter, Bennett, McLemore, and even Smart may be off the board. I'm not sure you've got any superstars left at that point.

I guess one thing I don't understand is that potential is usually based on athleticism, and Oladipo has buttloads of that. So I'm not sure why there's a perception of low ceiling for a guy who already has demonstrated a great work ethic and ability/willingness to improve. We're still talking potential, so you'd take more proven players at key positions first, but I don't get the "he can't be anything more than roleplayer" argument.

Furthermore, take into account the irrational "He wasn't a 1-and-done; therefore, he's tapped out as far as his ceiling goes" position.

And actually disproved by his own significant improvement in his junior year.

Even further, now we must take into account the fucking "What if that shit was a fluke?!" argument.

Damnit.

You mean his shooting? Well, yeah. If it was guaranteed he'd shoot over 50% from 3 with a 70% TS, he'd go in the top 3. Which is why people are saying you have to see how he does the rest of the year, and how he does in workouts. It's been mentioned before, but DraftExpress at least noted that his form seems to have improved and become a lot more consistent. Good sign for a "non-fluke", but still, there's a lot of time to watch between now and the draft. Yet, it seems like there are folks who really don't care if he does maintain that and show well in workouts. He'd still have "no offensive skills".

It's funny. Some guys get drafted based on the hope that they'll develop a jumper they don't currently have, which apparently is fine. But when a different guy actually demonstrates that improvement and we're now looking for consistency, it's somehow worse.

Since this will probably turn into the general Oladipo pre-draft thread, here is the recent DraftExpress profile of Oladipo, probably posted elsewhere on the site, but deserving a place here.

Saw alot of Andre Iggy in that vid...Same weaknesses too. If he buffed up and kept that quickness and tenacity he could be the next Iggy

Defensively Oladipo is probably the closest thing to ron artest we've seen. May be he will be like igoudala. His handle needs improvement, but if he's a spot up shooter in the nba it probably won't matter. He defense alone can get him a top 10 selection. Although, you could point to rondo as a guy who came out of college an all defensive team candidate, and fell into the 20's when teams didn't think he'd develope offensively.

Yeah, it seems like some basically say "it's a bad thing he improved and he wasn't good until he was a junior." That, is actually funny.

Any hopes of getting him with the Lakers pick(if we even get it) are quickly fading. His national momentum is picking up and he's getting a lot of talk as a lottery pick at this point

First take just talked about Dicky V's Jordan comparison. I didn't get a chance to see MJ play in college as i was about -1 years old, but i bought what they were saying. Basically said that MJ played next to Perkins and Worthy in NC and didn't get to showcase his talents to the extent that Victor is. Said they see some of MJ in his movements, but said they'd like to see what his jump shot really looks like. Let's face it, this kid is is a phenomenal athlete. He plays great defense, rebounds well, and scores at a very efficient clip. I know he doesn't project to be the same scorer in the league but I'd love that kind of defensive force on my team, that knows how to get buckets away from the ball near the hoop. Furthermore, i think hes a much better fit next to kyrie at the 2 than dion waiters. Depending on where we pick, i think hes a viable option.

I think Oladipo is this year's MKG. He's not going to get drafted #2 overall but he's the hustler, defender, glue guy with all the intangibles teams dream of. At the end of the day though, he's a role player in my mind. He's going to be a damn good role player, but a role player. A team like the Cavs could really use that. A team like the Bobcats could not.
